The Ocean’s City

Chapter 19

I woke up in the back of an old dusty car. My head raged from a hangover and something else. The memories flooded me, and I hyperventilated.

I shook as I noticed I was tied up.

“I’ll untie you once you calm down. For now, just enjoy the ride. You’re back in your world.”

I did my best to sit up. I could see the city building reaching toward the sky, but I didn’t recognize it as my city.

The pain in my chest ached. Was it worth being here if it meant losing Dannie? Just as the thought crossed my mind. There was a harsh jolt on the side of the car. A loud bang and screeching of brakes accompanied it.

The old man cursed as the car spun out of control. They hit the cement power line right on the driver’s side. It sent me lunging to the side of the car with my head hitting the window, breaking the glass.

I could hear the rigid pants of the man. It sounded like he was in pain. “I’m coming for you.” He said between the sounds of gurgling blood.

It was a nightmarish sound.

I sat in shock as I listened to a car door slam shut and the familiar clack of shoes against the pavement.

The back door swung open with a cry. I slowly turned, wholly tied and vulnerable, to see Dalton’s piercing eyes gun me down.

I was his once again.
