Chapter 31: Sumi
Kasious ran over to us a bit after. It had only been minutes since he ended the king. There would be a celebration soon where he accepted most of his royal duties, but first we had one more issue to deal with.
Kerrigan threw Sabastian on the floor in front of him, still gagged and shackled. Kasious's eyes changed from the optimistically cheerful to a understanding coldness. “What do we do with him?” He asked as he looked up at us. “He was felled by your handy work, I will let you decide his fate.”
I sighed. Every muscle in my body wanted to reach out and strangle the life out of the cult leader for what he did to Kerrigan and Varrin, but we still needed him. “We should take him to the dungeons until we can leave for the Roven. We'll need him to prove the cult is behind this war.”
Varrin shook his head. “No… no we don't.” He muttered. We all looked back at him in both surprise and confusion. He looked almost mournful as he stared down at the ground. Something was bothering him. He cleared his throat and handed Kerrigan his knife. “We don't need him, get your revenge.”
Kerrigan gripped the knife tight, no doubt savoring the moment, but he hesitated for a moment. Sabastian was useful to our people. We both turned to Varrin. “What the hell did he tell you?” I asked. My brain raced with any small possibilities for the change in mood.
Varrin turned back to the cult leader and disgust filled his face, but then it was replaced by… tears. His face scrunched into such pain. He whipped away the tears and faced me again. “He told me the truth… he's useless to us.” He nodded to Kerrigan again to reassure him of his revenge.
Kerrigan picked up the cult leader and brought him up on his knees. Kerrigan pressed the knife up to his throat. “For my mother.” He whispered. He slashed across Sabastian's throat. Sabastian tried to move but his shackles held him still as blood spilled down his body. It was a quick and efficient kill. I wish it could have been longer. He deserved a longer death. Kerrigan tried to hold back the rush of emotions from finally getting his revenge. He let a few tears fall to the floor. Otah and Kasious moved to console the half-orc
Varrin gestured for me to follow him. I didn't argue, he had answers I needed. He led me down a long staircase that led to some kind of Armory. He stopped as he entered the room, decorated with steel and wood. He sighed. “I bet you're wondering what I was thinking.” He muttered. His words were so cold, as if the weight of the world hung on his muscular shoulders.
I walked forward and pressed a small kiss to his lips. “I trust you made the right call… but something does seem to be bothering you.” His face twitched at the accusation. He looked like whatever he wanted to say to me put him through genuine pain.
He nodded slowly. “Sabastian had a partner in the mages.” He muttered. My heart sank at the revelation. Sabastian had said that the cult was stolen from him by his benefactor, and if they were a mage. This just became a lot more difficult.
I cupped his face. “It's fine… we'll find a way to expose this person and save your people.” I reassured him. Hell, we just took down a king and a cult. What the hell could stop us now?
Tears fell down the mage's face. “It's… we can't.” His voice trailed off as emotions claimed him and his entire body fell into mine.
I held him tight. “We took down a king. Who could possibly stop us?” I asked. I ran my hands through the mages thick black hair, trying to calm him down.
He held back some of his emotions and looked up at me. “It's… it's the Magistrate.” He admitted. My entire body stiffened. The leader of the mages. She was… she was considered to be as strong as a god. Varrin nodded as he pulled away from me. “The Magistrate now manipulates the cult of the Depraved and all of the mages. She started this war, she's been responsible since the start.” His knees almost buckled but he caught himself on a small workbench.
I was lost for words. If legends were true she could destroy all of us with just a thought. We were way out of our league. “What do we do?” I asked.
Varrin's bright blue eyes became muddled with tears once again. “I… I don't know.”
To be continued…
