Chapter 2 - Disaster
Aaron
11 Years Later
I stand here watching Randy’s house go up in flames. Chiron stood beside me as something within the house exploded. Chiron is my gamma and the pack’s head doctor. Currently Randy is in our pack hospital being treated but it is not looking good. He was able to teleport himself to the pack where he scared the shit out of the boys as they watched a movie. He was somehow able to teleport himself into the movie room while they were watching a scary movie. He was quickly taken to the hospital where Chiron entrusted his staff to treat him. The two of us hurried here to see if we could find Kodi. I would have asked Randy about her but he was still unconscious. I had a few of my best trackers searching the immediate area for her after having them scent one of her toys.
“Sorry Alpha but we followed her scent to the edge of the canyon where it disappeared.” Solomon says.
“What do you mean disappeared?” Chiron asked.
“Her scent just stopped. Delmar went down the canyon as far as he could but there was nothing while we went about a half mile in both directions along the canyon, but again nothing. Her scent just vanished.” Solomon explained.
My trackers walked away trying to find her scent, but I knew they wouldn’t. I knew whoever was responsible did not have her or we would have known about it already. If Zenos was behind this then he would waste no time in taking her back to the kingdom and using her.
“She used her powers, but where would she go?” Chiron asked.
“I do not know. They moved here to central California two years ago, so she may have gone back to their house in Oregon. She would not go back to his house in Texas. Randy sold that one and she would not have a reason to go back. I already alerted Krater about what happened as he is at Randy’s house on Maui. He is there watching for her.” I explained.
“Do not worry we will find her. It might take a bit, but I know we will find her.” Chiron states.
I know he is right, but there is something within me telling me that finding her is not going to be as easy as we think. She turned 12 a month ago and has come into her powers from both sides. I know Randy had been helping her control and learning to use her powers. Kodi was already extremely powerful, but she did not use them unless she needed to. She would be using them now, since she was in survival mode. Chiron looked at me and I knew he was also worried. If Kodi does not want to be found then she will not be.
“How is he?” I asked.
“He is holding on. I am not sure how, but he is. I do not think he will live much longer and to be honest I am surprised he has held on this long. He is awake but weak.” Chiron answered.
I nod to him as we walk into Randy’s room. I can barely comprehend how he even survived the fire. I believe he did it to get Kodi to safety. It has been three days since the fire and there is still no sign of her. She was seen a few hours after the fire at the house in Oregon, but she was gone before anyone could get to her. She never showed up at the house in Maui. Krater has been checking but so far nothing. Krater has been checking all known places she could be but so far nothing. She is teleporting faster than we can get to where she has been spotted.
“Randy, hey we need you to tell us what happened.” I say.
“There is not much to tell. I was woken up by Kodi telling me there were men standing outside the house. Before I could get to the door I started smelling smoke then there was an explosion, which I am guessing was from my spell room.” Randy huffs.
“Where is Kodi?” Chiron asked.
“I forced her back into her room and instructed her to pack, which she did. I told her to go to the house in Oregon and open the hidden panel and take everything in there.” He mumbles.
“Where would she go?” I asked.
“I told her to go to the flower.” He whispers.
Before I can ask another question the room is filled with people. The monitors in the room are screaming as I watch the last of my best friends die. Konor, my beta, pulls me out of the room while they try and resuscitate Randy, but I know they would not get him back. Naydeen walks up and wraps her arms around me as the three of us stand there and watch as they try their best, but with no luck.
“What did he mean when he said to go to the flower?” Naydeen asked.
“I have no idea.” I admit.
We had been sitting here trying to figure out what Randy meant right before he died. I had tried to reach Kodi how Randy showed me, but there was nothing. Randy had gifted her a necklace that was also a way for her to let me know she was alright. She had either lost the necklace or it had been broken.
“Is there a possibility that Randy had a house on one of the other islands?” Meliki asked.
“As far as I know he did not. I know he had family here on the big island, but I had already spoken to them and they have not seen anyone around their houses that they do not know. The did tell me that they will watch for Kodi, but I doubt they will see or find her.” I answer.
There is a knock on the door. I tell the person to enter and I am surprised to see Reign. The boys had met Kodi when she was very young, but I doubt they would remember her. Reign and Ino had turned 16 two months ago while Kekipi and Mauku turned 14 three weeks ago. They had been out scouring the borders to see if they noticed anything. Ino and Mauku could detect magic which was helpful and I knew they wanted to help so I let them. Reign walked up to my desk and placed a small jacket on my desk. I knew by the smell alone that it belonged to Kodi.
“Ino found it two miles west of our border heading into town. We followed the scent for another half mile until it vanished. Sorry Dad, but we could not pick up the scent again and neither could Solomon or Delmar.” Reign states.
“You boys did good. Go find the boys and have fun. There is nothing else we can do now.” I told him.
I watch as he stares at the jacket like he does not want to leave it here. He clinches his hand into fist before his shoulders drop as he turns around and walks out. I look around the room and notice that everyone else noticed the strange reaction that Reign had. He had been gripping the jacket tightly to him when they had walked in.
“Do you think they could be mates?” Naydeen asked.
“It is possible. It took everything he had to set that jacket down and leave. He might be our best leader in finding her. As far as mates we will not know until he turns 18 as does she. If they are then he might be able to follow the bond. She is clearly not of age but remember fey and elves are different from shifters.” Konor points out.
8 Years Later
Kodi
The sun has just begun to illuminate the sky with its morning hues of colour. My board is propped up behind me as I leaned against it. I watch the waves as they hit the beach. Eight years, that is how long it has been since that awful night. It seems like yesterday that Uncle Randy and I were happy then that night happened.
__FLASHBACK START__
I was not able to sleep for some reason. The feeling of dread had not left me all day, even when I was at school. It was close to midnight when I heard something lurking around outside. I figured some animal, probably the fucking raccoons lurking in the bushes looking for food. They knock over the trash cans nightly. Then I heard the voices. I looked out my window and that is when I saw several figures standing in front of the house.
“Uncle Randy please wake up. There are people outside the house.” I whisper yell.
Uncle Randy groans but does not wake up. I hate to do it but I pull on him making him roll out of his bed and onto the floor. I cannot control the giggle that leaves my lips as he lets out a groan then a string of swear words. He looks at me like I have lost my mind. I tell him what I saw from my window as he jumps up to look out his window. More swear words fall from his lips as he grabs me and runs to my room. That is when I smell it, smoke. Uncle Randy flings me into my room demanding me to pack. I grab everything I need as something explodes within the house. The fire must have reached his spell room. He grabs me making me face him.
“Listen Kodi I need you to listen.” Uncle Randy says.
“Okay, but what is going on?” I asked.
“I have no idea, but I need you to go back to the house in Oregon and open the hidden panel. Take everything in there and then in the master bedroom open the secret panel and take the box of books in there then leave and go to the Scaevola house on the big island. You will be safe there. I will try and come to you, but I need you to understand that I might not make it out of here alive. Do not come back here, promise me this?” Uncle Randy told me.
“Okay, but I need you.” I cry.
“Everything will be alright little princess. Now go and do not look back.” He states.
He nods at me as I teleport myself to the Oregon house. That is the last time I saw Uncle Randy. I did as he told me to. I felt my connection with Uncle Randy break a few days later and I knew he had passed away. I cried for hours alone there in the Scaevola house.
__FLASHBACK END__
I touched the large tear drop fire agate around my neck. Uncle Randy gave it to me when I was five. I have not taken it off since. The necklace itself is made of black metal which is more or less indestructible.
“I told you we would find her here.” Kekipi remarks.
“I knew she would be here. She is always here.” Mauku snarks.
I smile as I turn around to watch them walk towards me. I did not leave the house for a week. When I did I came straight to the beach early one morning. It was so peaceful. I watched as several guys started surfing and I thought it looked like fun. I made my way closer and that is how I met Kekipi and Mauku. They taught me how to surf and within a year I was really good at it. All the guys that I got to know told me I was a natural. Now I am the top female surfer in the world.
“Please tell me you are in the competition this weekend.” Kekipi says.
“Yes, the World Surf League approached me along with numerous sponsors more or less begging me to enter. And before you ask, I said yes.” I replied.
“Oh thank god. This asshole needs some decent competition.” Kekipi sighs.
Kekipi was pointing at Mauku who was glaring at him. I shook my head at him as the three of us headed out to join the rest of the guys out on the water. There are a few other girls out there but normally it is me and the guys. We are all great friends and they have become like family. After what happened trust was not something I had in people, but these guys won me over. I know that Kekipi and Mauku are from the pack here on the island, but everyone thinks I am human. With the help of a very old spell that I found in one of my books when I was 14 I was able to change my scent so any supernatural I came across would think I was human. This is where I feel free. Free from the horrible memories that plague me and free from knowing that if anyone found out what I am that I would be used for my powers.
“You should enter the competition. You are good enough and I know you would do well.” I say.
“I knew you were going to say that. You know that while I love surfing, it is more of a hobby and workout for me. I am not as serious about the sport as you and Mauku. Do not worry I will be here in the stands watching the two of you own all the other competitors. I know that Reign and Ino are coming as well. I am sure the rest of the guys here that are not participating will be right here beside me cheering all of you on.” Kekipi screams.
I laugh when a vast majority of the others yell in agreement. We are a close bunch and somehow I became the unofficial little sister of the group. I know several of the other girls do not like me because of how close I am with the guys. I have heard them talking about me and how they believe that I am sleeping with a few of them, but I am not. The guys laughed when I told them that and they set the other girls straight. I still get some vicious looks but they do not say shit to me any longer.
“See you tomorrow morning Kodi. Two more days and then we can show the world what we got.” Mauku announces.
I squeal when he pulls me into his arms lifting me off the ground. While Mauku is not that tall, around 6’2” or so he is still at least half a foot taller than my 5′ 4” frame. I can hear a few of the guys laughing at the two of us. I tell them that I will see them tomorrow as I head for my car. My Jeep Gladiator is my baby. It is the first thing I bought with the money that I earned. I pull into the garage of the small house that I own. I leave my board on the top of my baby as I walk inside. I make a bee line for my bathroom and turn on the shower. I strip quickly and step under the warm water washing the sand from my body. I rinse the last of the soap from my body. Stepping out of the shower I wrap the large soft towel around my body as I grab a pair of comfortable shorts and shirt. I walk into the small room that I set up as my office as my computer turns on. I will not leave the house for the next two days. I need to get as much as I can done before the competition.
