The Mirrorverse

Chapter 54

Ka

“He’s just a sick fuck!” Maya shouted. The allies were sat around in a circle, leaning against trees and discussing what they were going to do next against William and his cronies.

Maya was so beautifully animated, her hair falling across her face making it look so enticing, making her so enticing. Maya continued her rant,

“Enjoying killi...”

Then she just stopped. Ka didn’t know whether the noise started before or after, all he knew is that the woman he loved just stopped dead. A trickle of blood ran down her forehead as she was frozen to the spot.

Ka couldn’t take in what had happened, but some part of him already knew that she was dead. She crumpled, that same expression fixed on her face as she fell towards Ka’s inert form.

It registered that they were bullets as the noise abruptly stopped. he had to take her out of the gunfire, she had so many bullet wounds now but he just had to bring her to him to protect her.

“No!” shouted Syrhahn, as he pulled Ka roughly back. More gunfire, Maya was shot while he was safe behind the tree, yet there he remained. The seconds ticked by like hours as he failed to grasp what was going on around him.

There must have been some aspect of self-preservation that prevented him moving out into the gunfire which overtook his need to protect Maya. That part of him already knew her fate, the rest just hadn’t caught up yet.

Silence fell on the battlefield. No, not a battlefield, a slaughterhouse. They were attacked while totally unarmed.

Ka reacted without thinking, dragging his love over to him, cradling her lifeless head in his arms on his lap.

He looked only at Maya, he didn’t spare a glance for his friends. He couldn’t, his whole world had ended. To a backdrop of gunfire, he thought of a conversation between Ke and himself.

It had been when they had first met, and were discussing Ka and Maya’s passage into Ke’s world.

“So you just followed her through the portal?” Ke had asked Ka incredulously, and Ka told him;

“Everything I had to lose was walking through that portal.”

Everything he had was lying in his arms. He didn’t shake her to wake her up, he didn’t want to disturb her any further. She had already been violated far beyond what her body could take.

The sound of men screaming punctuated the silence that Ka hadn’t noticed descend. He couldn’t care less about them, who they were or what they were going through, he was frozen in time staring at the motionless face of his girl.

Her eyes were open, and he gently closed them for the last time. Her face blurred as he tried to focus on her through the tears.

They took her away from me. Sudden anger just burst through the pain. Ka wanted to go to them, to turn their guns on them and slaughter them in cold blood as they had slaughtered her. But he couldn’t have got up if he had tried, his body was in some kind of shock, leaving him almost as motionless as the sleeping woman in his lap.

Ka looked up and what he saw he had no more emotion left to feel for. He looked at what looked like his own dead body, Ke lying there with a bullet in his chest. The only other person he could see was Rob, who was equally dead.

The sole survivor, Ka sat there leaning against the tree surrounded by the dead bodies of those he loved. It was a nightmare, he just needed to wake up.

Ka looked down and wondered why Maya’s face was wet, then remembered that somewhere in him there was still some part that wasn’t numb and dead inside, as it was still producing tears.

Ka left a part of himself behind in the forest that day, as did all his allies.
