Chapter 57
Hunter’s screams of pain numb my wolf and an excruciating pain shoots through my entire mind. I fight with myself to stay at the surface.
My entire body tingles as my wolf slowly start to diminish from my mind but I can sense her fight.
My eyes are heavy as Hunter carries me away. My body is aching as my wolf is trying to numb her own pain.
Hunter’s face is full of worry and that is all I can make out as my vision starts to get blurry. He is talking but I cannot hear a thing.
My wolf is in a downward spiral of her own. She is fighting through the pain trying to keep me conscious but all my mind wants to do is sleep. I am in his arms his hands are on me yet I feel everything he cannot stop this pain and I can sense that that is scaring him as well.
My wolf is fighting a tough fight but she cannot win this. My eyes blur even more as I take one last look at Hunter and then the darkness takes me with it.
"Melany, stay with me, love. Please," he begs just before everything goes quiet.
~Silver POV~
Melany allows herself to go to the darkness and if I let her we both just might not come back.
We're stronger than this. At least I think we are, come on Melany!
I push myself higher and higher until I can feel as if I am growing heavier.
In our own darkness, I see a speck of light and I fight to get to it. The speck starts growing until it is a blinding light. I gravitate towards it my body feels as if it is floating and I entered unknown territory.
“What happened to her?” A male voice invades my ears.
“She’s was in shock and now I don’t know.” Hunter sounds distressed.
The sound of a door opening and then slamming practically makes me jump out of my skin. A pounding at my chest makes my body shake with distress.
“What the fück did you do to her?” The voice is laced with venom and I all I want to do is punch whoever dares to speak to Hunter that way.
“Alpha please let me talk to him,” a calmer voice interjects, “Alpha Hunter what happen?” This voice is completely unfamiliar to me.
Even now I can feel the tension. “Melany marked me and I was in a lot of pain when I open my eyes she was in the ground her ears bleeding and she passed out before I got here.”
“Did you happen to show her your pain?” The calmer voice asks.
“Show her my pain?” Hunter appears not to understand what he is saying.
“Yes, did she know it hurt you?”
“I screamed if that’s what you mean.” There is a tight grip on my hand as the words leave Hunter.
“Oh shít!” That sounds so reassuring.
“What?” The two other males say in unison.
“When a wolf marks his ‘loved one’ we all go through different scenarios but this one is clear. She was hurting you so she decides to take your pain away. If I’m correct your power is to take away someone’s pain...but you can’t take your own pain away is that correct?”
“I can take other peoples pain away that’s correct. I have to live with my own pain.” There is so much hurt in his voice that I just want to do is take away his pain. I can handle his pain and Melany's.
“As well as she, she is a wolf healer but this pain is yours so you couldn’t help her and the pain she is feeling is yours and hers as well so she is suffering more than you did.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means her mind shut off so that it can repair itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if she wakes up in a couple of hours but this can take a long time depends on how strong she is.”
“You see what you did!” The man hisses and the sound of a struggle fills my ears, “All this because you wanted to make a statement.”
“This has nothing to do with you...you’re just mad she chose me over you.” A loud growl rumble vibrates in the room.
“That’s it you two out! This is an infirmary for Christ sakes. People here are trying to get better.”
There is mumbling and then the sound of the door closing is followed by silence.
Melany, are you there?
I used to be aware of her. No matter if she was hurt badly or was healthy as a horse her presences dominated her body. Now I’m all alone in here.
Melany!
Suddenly I feel lost and confused. I do not want to take over her body I have heard too many bad things about that. I also do not want to lose my human I need help.
Melany if you can hear me I’m going to get you back.
I surface and her eyes slowly open my vision is blurry but they start to focus.
The nagging beeping noise tells me I am in fact in the infirmary. The clearing of their throat makes my eyes go to the man at the end of my bed.
“Melany,” His blue eyes penetrate mine with a mixture of emotions.
“Derek.” Even though he has not done anything towards me personally I still want nothing to do with him.
“You’re Melany’s animal spirit.” His hands grip the bed end and he leans closer his big blue eyes on me.
“How do you know that?” His statement catches me by surprise there is no question about it he knows who I am.
“When one of my most valued guests gets hurt do you think I’m just going to sit back and ignore it?” He still does not answer my question.
“I guess not.”
“What’s your name?” His eyes hypnotize me.
“Ironically it’s Silver.” He makes his way to me and sits at the edge of the bed.
“I like it.”
“Thanks, I guess,” pushing myself up into a sitting position making myself more comfortable.
“Can I ask you something, Silver?” Derek leans away from me giving me some space. I am not Melany, I will bite if he gets too close.
No one has ever called me by my name and it sounds foreign.
“Go ahead,” I shrug at him.
“This might be out of bounds but I want to know what you think. Do you think Melany belongs with Hunter?” His head is turned to look at me giving me a sideways glance.
“That’s for her to decide and she made her choice but what I think is...yes. Both their ragged edge heart seems to be a perfect half for each other.”
“You don’t say.” He turns and looks ahead his head hanging low.
“She seems to be more centered with Hunter around. He was her lifesaver when she was drowning with Marcus and I couldn’t do anything.” That piece of shit of a mate. I should have ripped his heart out and given it to the girl he wanted to be with when I had the chance.
I could have saved Melany from so much pain.
He turns and I see the sadness in his face.
“She also helped him through his darkest hour she pulled him out of it when no one else could.”
“So I was too late.” He states.
“You could have gotten there earlier but I have a feeling the second Mel met Hunter that wouldn’t have mattered.” That much I know is true.
He sighs, “Well I guess I’m going to find someone else. You know what she would have made a perfect mate. A perfect queen to run my pack.”
“That she would but she’s paving her own way and she wants Hunter by her side so just let her be happy. Good choice of words but a queen does not suit Melany. Neither does luna, she is an alpha.” He really wanted to be with Melany.
“You’re a good wolf..." He pats my legs as I narrow my eyes at his small gesture, "watch over her.” He gives me a weak smile.
“I have been since day one,” he gives me a bigger smile and then leans in.
“May I?” I shrug unsure of what he wants. His lips press on my forehead. I shove him away as my teeth bare at him. The only human to have ever kissed my forehead has been Julian. “Take care Silver...but I can’t quit on her. She even has my pack siding with her.”
“Calvin.” I sigh he nods, “well you’re not getting nowhere with her I’m sorry.” He nods and stands up. "She knows where she belongs and I am telling you that you don't have a place in her life other than where you were before the Moonlight Ball."
“That’s never stopped me before.” He walks to the door and his hand grips the handle.
“Can you call Hunter for me?” I ask before he walks out.
“Sure.” He is out the door and not long after Hunter walks in. He has a plate in his hand and a water bottle.
He does not take long to see through me. “You’re not Melany.” I shake my head.
“I’m Silver, her wolf.” His eyes widen. For once I get to admire his eyes for myself. “Wow, your eyes are breathtakingly beautiful.”
“Where’s Melany?” He is not detoured with my words.
“She’s healing slowly but surely. All she needs is time.” I can feel her presences deep in my core.
Hunter takes a breath and a growl rumbles through him. “Alpha Storm’s scent is all over the bed.”
“All over? He just sat in the edge.” I can see the anger rising. “Can you help me sit up please?”
His anger washes away, “Of course.” He puts his plate and water on a table. He gently lifts me up higher and positions the pillows to cushion my back. My body was slouching without the support of the pillow.
“Thank you so much.”
Melany pushes herself harder her presences being more present.
“How are you feeling?” Hunter respects my space and stands nearby.
“To be honest everything hurts...well hurt is not the right word more like I feel sore.”
“I brought you some food and water.” He pushes the table towards me and I see that it is a sandwich.
“Thanks.” He takes a seat on a chair next to me but angles it so that he still leaves some room between us. I take a bite out of the sandwich. It is good I have not eaten anything human ever and now I know what I’m missing.
“So how is this possible, you being here and all.” Hunter rests his body back onto the seat as his tired eyes meet mine.
“When Melany was falling into the darkness I did not want to lose her so I fought hard to keep her conscious but she was weak. If we both fell into this there is a possibility that she may never wake up so I did the second best thing...take over her body.”
“What happened? Maybe we aren’t meant to be together. This was a grave mistake.” Hunter sinks further into his chair as his fingers run through his hair.
“No, it wasn’t. She was happy you two took this step. You’re hers now and soon she will be yours. This was just a hitch in the road.”
“I will rather be in her spot.”
“She wouldn’t. She hates seeing you hurt. Now she knows what went wrong when you do it...it will be different.”
“What went wrong?” His eyes burn into mine showing me his pain.
“You two can feel others pain she just happens to be able to heal your wolf. But the mark intertwined both your pain and hers. She knew she was hurting you and that sends her over the edge. She has always come close to falling off with her father and Marcus but I was always able to bring her back. You, on the other hand, sent her like a cannonball. I couldn’t do anything to stop her.”
“Wow.”
“She loves you that much that she rather lose herself than lose you.”
Melany is surfacing and my vision is blurring and there is a tug at my core.
Melany.
Yes. She sounds fragile.
You have one sad Hunter waiting for you.
Hunter.
“She wants to see you.” I look over at Hunter and his eyes widen. “Before I go I want you to know this you may not be her mate but never doubt the love she feels for you. I know because I feel it every time she sees you.” He smiles at me, “Goodbye Alpha Hunter.”
I bow my head showing him my respect and then I am tossed back as Melany surfaces.
Take good care of him, Melany.
