The Maiden and The Four Waters

Chapter Chapter Three

She felt the light from outside struggle to break in through the window. She felt the breeze cool down.

She felt a slight weight on her lower legs. She pushed herself up slightly seeing a pile of clothes for her to wear.

She carefully reached down to grab the item on the top of the pile. She pulled the ruffled long-sleeved grey/white shirt over her head. She looped the ribbon at the neckline into a loose bow. She looked down at the corset and rolled her eyes, she pushed it off her bed.

She reached for her bloomers, she tried to sit on the edge of the bed before pulling the bloomers over her lower body. She leaned over to reach for her trousers.

She was one of the few women in the village who preferred to wear trousers over skirts and dresses. She rose to her feet to adjust the buttons of her waistband.

She sighed in annoyance as she noticed no jacket, belt or even shoes. They were trying to keep her to stay put.

Walla listened to the silence within the hospital. She slowly stepped towards the window as she looked out to her village.

Seeing lamp posts being filled with candlelight. Noticing the shadows of villagers move around the inside of the two-storey tavern in the town; the only tavern the village had.

She titled her head down watching as several nurses walked away from the hospital and towards the tavern.

Walla smiled out at her village; her eighteen-birthday loomed closer, the trust she had gained from the villagers after the death of her father on her sixteenth birthday. The village had their opinion on a child, especially a young woman filling the voice of the people but as days ticked to months and months ticked to years.

The villagers had begun to see her as equal.

Walla never dared to see herself as above her village instead she needed to be seen just like them. Only difference being she had the final say.

Walla looked at the trees by her window, she sighed noticing the cut back branches. The medical staff knew she tried to escape; they had organised the branches cut to prevent Walla from running free.

Walla looked below her window, nothing safe for her to land on. She could risk climbing out her window knowing she’d loudly escape, or she could cause further injury.

She stepped over to the door, she tried to quietly pull it open. Walla peered out the door seeing the halls empty. She rushed out of her room, leaving the door wide open.

She pulled open the front door of the hospital. She didn’t hesitate as she turned to the side of the hospital. She ran down the side following the darkness to the river.
