Chapter 38
I have never been so happy to see a Monday morning before but after two days of dealing with Helen I couldn't be happier. Ryker hadn't come back to the house for more than a few minutes since Helen had shown up so she expected the rest of us to entertain her. Last night she even started knocking on the door to mine and Elijah's room in the middle of the night. The only positive thing about her constant interruptions was that I didn't sleep heavily enough to have that horrible nightmare again. I was grateful for that even if that was only because I didn't get a proper night's sleep for the last two nights.
I let out a long sigh as I got dressed for the day ahead. I would much rather be spending the day with Elijah but Helen had ruined that plan too. Elijah didn't want to be stuck in the same house as Helen for another moment so he was going to spend the days visiting his business interests around the pack. I was sure that I would be able to persuade him to let me come with him. I have my ways and I can be very persuasive but if I was going to skip school there were other things I would rather be doing.
"Are you sure you don't want to spend the day with me? We could go for a run in the forest and find a secluded place where we won't get interrupted." I suggested, pouting slightly as I walked from the bathroom and into our bedroom. He looked utterly delicious dressed in his suit and I was filled with a strong urge to rip all his clothes off.
"As amazing as that sounds, I think we would both enjoy that a lot more if we weren't worrying about a certain someone finding us." He responded. It was disappointing but he did have a point. If she caught us in the act then I wasn't sure that I would be able to stop Onyx from clawing her eyes out.
"Oh," I replied.
"Don't sound so disappointed. I am still going to make you scream my name tonight," he said. He closed the distance between us and wrapped his arms around my waist. He pulled me close to his body and kissed me softly. Our kiss very quickly became heated as he pulled me even tighter against his body, filling me with desire.
My hand moved towards the buttons on his shirt. I was just about to undo them when there was a loud, rapid knock at the door. "Just ignore it," Elijah whispered. His lips didn't even leave mine as he spoke.
"Diana, please don't leave me out here. She could come by any minute." Ava shouted. She sounded so annoyed that I was worried she might break down the door if I didn't let her in. Elijah groaned in frustration as I broke our kiss and opened the door. As soon as I opened the door Ava ran inside pulling Felix behind her by his arm.
"What did she do now?" I asked. Felix pulled Ava into his chest and held her firmly against him. Being held by your mate was usually enough to calm most werewolves almost instantly but Ava was so furious that it was having almost no effect on her.
"She tried to steal my mate." Ava shouted, her voice only slightly muffled by Felix's chest. He stroked her hair and whispered comforting words into her ear. Ava was shaking her head vigorously and pushing against his chest.
"Just because I haven't marked you yet doesn't mean she can have you," Ava continued. Tears of frustration were forming in her eyes. Ava had been reluctant to accept Felix but over the last few days his perseverance had been starting to pay off.
"She can't have me princess, my heart belongs to you and only you," Felix replied. He leaned forward and pressed his lips against hers, while his hands squeezed her ass.
Elijah sighed and turned away from his brother. His cheeks were pink with embarrassment. Elijah wanted his brother to be happy with his mate but he didn't really want to see them being so intimate together.
'Maybe we should get some breakfast?' I suggested to Elijah through our mindlink. Elijah thought about my suggestion for a moment before shaking his head.
'I don't think I could eat if Helen was there,' Elijah replied. I couldn't argue with him there. Elijah's family enjoyed having their meals together but ever since Helen showed up that had all but stopped. Elijah and I spent a lot of time this weekend together in our room instead.
'We could go to a cafe in town," I suggested. A smile crossed Elijah's face as he turned towards me. He placed a chaste kiss on my lips before filling Ava and Felix in on my suggestion.
"The only problem now is getting out of here without getting caught," Ava responded. I thought about that exact problem a number of times over the weekend but my attempts so far have been unsuccessful. That woman should get a job as a tracker, she seemed to have a way of always finding us.
We finished getting ready in record time then started our escape attempt. Instead of heading towards the entrance at the front of the house, we headed towards the back of the house. Helen was less likely to come to this part of the house, it was our only chance.
We creeped through the corridors as silently as possible. Not even daring to breathe too loudly in case it would draw too much attention to us. Elijah was out in front while Felix stayed a few steps behind us.
To my surprise we made it all the way through the house and to the back door without getting caught. As we reached the door I could hear Helen in one of the nearby rooms asking where everyone was. Her shrill voice was enough to make me cringe even with so much space and a couple of walls between us.
Elijah opened the door, checking each way before signalling for us to follow him. We snuck around to the front of the building. As we were emerging from the bushes at the edge of the house I saw Ryker. He was walking down the ridiculously long driveway he was slouched over as he walked and his eyes were looking towards the pavement.
I have never seen Ryker look so utterly broken. He was usually so strong and so defiant against everyone who stood in his way. I didn't like seeing him like this, we were so close growing up. He was the closest thing I had to family. Elijah tried to pull me backwards into our hiding place in the bushes but I shook my head in his direction and walked over to Ryker. I could feel Elijah's frustration as I moved away from him. He didn't like me being out of his arms, even for a second but at least it would give him a nice view of my ass. I smirked to myself, I had a feeling I was going to pay for my defiance later.
"Let's get out of here," I told Ryker. I didn't wait for any response from him before I took off quickly in the direction of the cafe. I needed food and coffee or someone was going to end up getting on my bad side today.
I only managed to walk a few metres before I felt Elijah's arms wrapping around my waist. He pulled me against his chest and swept me off my feet. He growled against my neck seductively.
'You need to be careful about swaying your hips. One of these days I aren't going to be able to resist you even if there are others around us at the time.' He told me over mindlink. He kissed my neck as he carried me away.
He didn't put me down until we arrived at the cafe. It was the same cafe that I came to the day after I recognised Elijah as my mate and the woman behind the counter was the same woman who served me that day. She recognised me the moment Elijah carried me in and gave a small excited squeal as her eyes lit up with recognition.
We stayed in the cafe for the next hour while we ate breakfast and drank lots of coffee. I still wasn't looking forward to the rest of the day ahead but at least this part of my day was enjoyable.
