Chapter 26
I heard Elijah's heart rate quicken instantly as adrenaline flooded his system. He was glancing around anxiously. He was trying to listen for any sign of the approaching threat but he wouldn't be able to hear anything yet. They were still too far away for that.
"What do they want?" He asked.
I tried to tap into my power, I reached out for them but there is something wrong. I am not sure if it is a problem with me or with them. It could just be that I am stressed or not fully in control of my powers yet but I can't feel anything from them. I can tell where they are and that they are in human form but that is all.
"I can't tell, they are approaching in human form and they have the building surrounded." I said.
"Do we have time to run?" Elijah asked, I could practically taste his anxiety.
"I don't think so." I said.
They were closing in on the house quickly. Maybe if I hadn't been so distracted I would have noticed their approach earlier and we could have run. Running now would only make things harder for ourselves. Besides I needed to find the other key and I would be damned if they were going to chase me off or take it from me. My mom left them for me and nobody was going to take them from me.
I reached out using my powers again. I focused on each of them in turn trying to work out anything that could help us fight them but I still can't feel anything from them. It feels almost as though there is something blocking my powers, I can hardly even reach their wolves.
Maybe they had been drugged or were under some kind of spell, I couldn't be sure. I didn't have time to worry about that now, they were almost here and I was sure they wouldn't hesitate to attack us.
"We will have to fight them. None of them are ranked so it should be easy enough." I said.
I started to take off some of my clothes and place them on the floor beside me. Elijah glanced over at me as though I had suddenly lost my mind. I ignored it and continued to undress until I was standing next to him in just my underwear.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"We are probably going to have to shift and I didn't bring a change of clothes." I said.
As much as nudity doesn't bother me I am not sure that driving over a hundred kilometres in broad daylight while completely naked was the best plan. There may be a lot of clothes that had been left in town but I had a feeling that none of them would be in a wearable state after so long.
Elijah must have come to a similar conclusion because he started to pull off his own clothes. I had just enough time to take a couple of seconds appreciating his body before I heard our uninvited guests coming into the house. That was when Elijah became aware of their presence. We listened intently as they moved through the house towards us.
As soon as they walked into the room I could see that there was something wrong with them. It was the way that they moved, there was something about it that just didn't seem natural. Their movements were much too slow and clumsy, almost how I would look in the morning before my coffee.
Elijah's body went stiff beside me and I could sense his anxiety. He was watching them closely as they walked into the room, he couldn't take his eyes off them.
"They look just like the werewolves who attacked us yesterday." Elijah said.
"What is wrong with them? Have they been drugged?" I asked.
"I don't know, we couldn't work it out." He said.
"Shut up alpha mutt, I want to speak to Diana." They said, all five of them. They spoke the exact same words at the same time. This was getting stranger by the second. Come to think of it, how did they know who I was?

"What do you want?" I asked.
"You will come with my vessels and they will take you to me." They all replied, holding out their hands.
Did whoever was controlling them really believe that I would take one of these people's hands and go to them? I wasn't stupid or crazy even though the person controling these werewolves was clearly both. "Like heck I will." I shouted.
"Maybe not now but sometime soon you will. I will keep sending more and more vessels you until you agree. How many of your little adopted pack would you be willing to sacrifice to stay away from me?" The creepy bunch said in unison. As much as I wanted to disbelieve what they were saying I couldn't completely rule it out. If this person went to the effort to do whatever they had done to these werewolves in front of us I couldn't say what else they would be capable of. Just thinking about that terrified me.
"Why are you doing this?" I asked.
"You are too important to lead a pack, you should be leading all of our kind and by my side we will do exactly that." The creepy bunch said.
I rolled my eyes.
Whoever was doing this was crazier than I gave them credit for if they thought that would work. They thought that they could use a bit of magic and I would leave my mate to rule by their side just because they said so. If they were here I would laugh right in their face.

"That is never going to happen so either attack us or leave" I said.
"As you wish." They replied.
Each of them pulled a silver dagger out of their pockets or bags and started walking towards us. I started moving to intercept them but every time I got close they dodged away from me. They were all trying to attack Elijah. He was doing a good job of avoiding them but he couldn't keep it up much longer. He was running out of space in which to dodge their attacks and he couldn't shift with them pushing forward the way they were. I could though. My shift was faster than the first time I shifted and much less painful. It was only a matter of seconds before I was standing on four paws ready to pounce on Elijah's attackers.
I could smell Elijah's blood in the air already, he had a few small cuts on his arms and back. Nothing too serious but I had to act now. I pounced on his attackers, biting at anything I could get my teeth into.
I ripped out the throats of two of them before the rest of them could even respond. The next one I went for dodged out of my way, backing themselves into the corner in the process. They lifted their knife up to ward me off but made no attempt to attack. I don't think they would even if I turned my back and gave them a clear shot. I ignored the knife and went straight for the kill.
I felt bad killing them. It was clear that they were under some kind of spell, they didn't deserve to die but I didn't have much choice. I couldn't risk giving them the chance to kill Elijah which was clearly what they wanted.
By the time that I pulled my teeth out of the wolf in front of me and turned my attention back to the other two they were already dead. Elijah was standing over them, he was still in his human form having snapped both of their necks. He had so many cuts on his body. None of them were deep but they were made with a silver blade. The silver was suppressing his wolf so none of his cuts were healing. I shifted back into my human form and started checking over his cuts. There was lots of blood but none of his cuts were bleeding heavily, I was sure that he would be fine in a few hours.
"I'm fine but we should probably find this other key before we get any more unwelcome guests." Elijah said.
