Chapter 20

Chapter 20

“Why are you wearing the wetsuit?” Victor demanded as we stood in front of Alex’s mansion. “You’ve got a beautiful new swimsuit that looks amazing on you, yet you’re wearing that… thing to William’s party.”

“The wetsuit is more comfortable for me,” I said. “I was too self–conscious in that skimpy swimsuit.”

“Do you have any

idea how ridiculous you look?” Victor asked me. He ran a hand. through his thick, black hair and leaned against his car. “We’re going to a pool party, not a deep sea expedition.”

Victor paced around the car twice.

“Get in the car. There’s no time to argue with you, or for you to change your outfit even if you were willing to be reasonable.” He opened the passenger door for me.

“I don’t care who doesn’t like it,” I said. “I wasn’t comfortable showing that much skin, and I’m tired of trying to be someb*dy I’m not.”

“You’ve set yourself up to be ridiculed in front of William. He won’t want to be associated with you after this.” Victor started the car. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“I think you’re underestimating William,” I said.

“Let’s go to the party and see,” Victor said and drove the short distance to William’s house.

William’s home is on a street similar to where I live. It is a large sandstone structure with two–story wings that wrap around a conservatory filled with plants and flowers.

At the rear of the house, there is a huge kidney–shaped swimming pool, a fountain, and a hot tub. Pots of tropical trees and flowers were placed around each.

An expansive deck decorated with more flowers and clear twinkle lights surrounded the water features. And a band played popular music next to a temporary dance floor.

Sure enough, precisely as Victor had told me, everyone at the party was wearing S*xy swimsuits while they soaked up the sun. Youthful bodies were reclining on deck chairs. and outdoor sofas or floating in the pool.

My wetsuit was a glaring contrast to everyone else at the party. My heart sank. I had made myself more noticeable than ever by wearing it.

Despite my wetsuit, William and his parents, Lily and Steven James, were warm and welcoming.

“It’s nice to meet you, Daisy,” Mrs. James said. “I like your swimming attire. Most young people feel the need to show off everything they’ve got.

Not sure what to say, I nodded, but her words made me relax a little.

“William, show Daisy around and introduce her to your friends,” Mrs. James said.

“Of course, Mom,” William said, motioning for me to accompany him.

I gave Victor an ‘I told you so‘ look and followed William.

“Mom is right. Your wetsuit is pretty cool,” William said as he led me to a group of attractive young people near the bar. “Have you ever gone snorkeling?”

“No,” I replied. Even though William and his family were trying to make me feel welcome, all the attention I was receiving was overwhelming. I hated having every eye at the party on me.

There were so many people at the party, way more than there were popular Alpha kids. in my high school.

“This is Daisy Wilson, Alex’s daughter,” William announced to a guy and a girl our age. “Daisy, this is Noah and Teena.”

“I thought her name was Alberta?” Teena asked. She was short with bright red hair and looked adorable in a yellow bikini.

“She has been known as Daisy all her life until now and prefers it,” William said and looked at me. “Right?“.

“Uh–huh,” I said. William truly understood me

“Yeah, I guess it would be hard to get used to being called a different name,” Teena said to William. She barely glanced at me.

“Our fathers are in the Alliance under Alex,” Noah said with a smile. “I’m glad you were found and are here with us today.” His kindness made me smile.

But Teena rolled her eyes and smirked.

Teena attended the same school as William and me. She never seemed to notice me at all, but now I heard her mumble, “The frizzy–haired dork must think she’s going scuba

diving in the pool.” It was another no–vote for my wetsuit.

I began to wish I was anywhere but here.

“Grow up,” Noah told her.

“Whatever,” she said and strolled away toward a small group of young people on the other side of the bar.

I was blushing as William led me away from the bar and began introducing me to the other people at the party. I’d never remember all their names. Most weren’t from my school, but many of their parents had business connections with Alex.

They were all interested in me at first. They called me the new heir, but most seemed offended or amused by my wetsuit, my out–of–control hair, and my stutter. I tried not to speak, but I was asked too many questions to remain mute.

The stares and glares continued, making me extremely uncomfortable. I reminded. myself that I didn’t care what they thought and that they were no better than me.

William soon led me back to the bar and left me with Noah. “I have to attend to other guests,” he said. “I’ll be back as soon as possible.

After he walked away, I felt utterly alone. Where was Victor? He promised he wouldn’t leave me alone at the party. Although, he was probably keeping his distance on purpose while I was with William.

I was right. Victor was across the pool, watching me. He gave me a wave and a smile.

I waved back a moment before he peeled off his polo shirt and dove into the pool. The sight of him in perfectly fitted swimming trunks was stunning.

Victor’s b*dy was incredible. His broad chest and muscular b*dy caused all the girls at the party to stop whatever they were doing and stare at his incredibly masculine form. I was staring too. He was hot.

Teena walked up to me and asked, “Isn’t that your fiancé?” She was practically drooling while watching Victor swim laps in the pool.

“Yes,” I replied.

“You’re a lucky girl,” she said, never taking her eyes off Victor. “When is your wedding?”

Yikes, I had to speak again. “We ha… haven’t suh… sét a date,” I replied.

Teena giggled and shook her head. “Excuse me,” she said and turned away before walking to the other side of the bar to where many others were standing. Their laughter soon floated my way

I tried to talk to others for a while, but my stammer made it physically and mentally exhausting. Some people I spoke to reacted like Teena, and a few who had too much to drink were even more rude about my stutter..

I’d had about enough.

I took a cold glass of fruit juice from a tray and looked around for a quiet place to be alone

There was nob*dy near the far side of the pool house, so I made my way through the crowd and found a place to stand behind several large potted hibiscus.

Before long, the band started playing louder, and the lead singer encouraged everyone to dance. I tried to melt into the shrubs at the side of the pool house to watch. No way was I going near the dance floor.

I knew I was allowing myself to be intimidated again, but I didn’t know how to dance, and this wasn’t the time to learn. Too many people at the party found me odd and amusing as it was. They didn’t need another reason to mock me.

I finished my juice and was wondering what I should do with the empty glass when someone tapped hard on my back.

Great. It had to be Victor, and he was going to scold me for hiding from the crowd. I turned, ready to argue with him.

But it wasn’t Victor. When I saw who was standing there, adrenaline shot through my b*dy, and my mouth snapped shut.

It was Bella Burrows, the ringleader of the mean girls who had bullied me in the school bathroom and torn my dress.

Benson made sure Bella and her best friend were transferred to another school, yet the other kids blamed me. It looked as if Bella did too.

She glared at me with an evil grin on her face and her hands on her hips.

“Hello, Daisy. Nice swimsuit.” Bella threw her head back and laughed. “What’s a stuttering loser like you doing at this party?”

Unable to speak, I shook my head.
