Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Daisy’s POV

My heart pounded with excitement. William was taking me home! I had to seize the opportunity and make an impression on him instead of turning to stone..

From watching him speak with Victor, I could tell William was very different from Victor.

Victor liked all kinds of, what I would describe as extravagant stuff, while William was much more low–key. Victor was talkative, and he always wore his typical breathtaking smile no matter who he talked to.

William, on the other hand, didn’t talk much and barely showed his feelings. He didn’t seem to care much about other people’s affairs, but he always answered questions in a polite and gentle way.

I needed to draw William out and get him to talk to me. But was I a good enough speaker to do it? The heck with my stutter. I had to try. Sitting silently beside him in his car wouldn’t make him like me better.

“What cuh … college are you… you attending after gra… graduation?” I asked. I was cringing inside after each word, but I refused to give up.

“I’ve been accepted at W.A.U.,” William replied, ignoring my stutter. I would have died if he had made fun of me.

“Wow. Tha… that’s great,” I said. “A…are you going to continue f..football in college?”

William went silent for a while. I got nervous and apologized. “So…Sorry if I asked too many que..questions? I j…just think you are a g…gifted player.”

“No worries,” William said. “I will continue, actually.”

“I want to be a professional football player,” he added after hesitating for a while.

My eyes grew wide, and my mouth gaped for a moment. Becoming a pro football player would be a tough climb.

“Why do you seem surprised?” William asked.

I shrugged. “I thought all the rich Alpha werewolves just wanted to work in business and become more and more wealthy.”

I wondered what William’s parents think of his career choice. They owned controlling stock in their own successful company. I’m sure they expected him to work with them.

“I’ll be studying to get a degree in business administration while I play college football,” William said stiffly. “It’s the only way my father will pay for me to attend college.”

So I was right. William’s parents wanted him to work in the family business instead of trying to break into professional football. It’s a shame they didn’t just let him do what he wanted to be happy.

I gave William a smile. Now I knew he was different from other Alpha werewolves. He must feel the same way I do. Happiness has nothing to do with money and power.

“Duh… Don’t lah…let anyone tell you…you to give up on fah… football,” I said. “It’s your lah…life. Do what… what makes you happy.”

“Thank you, Daisy,” William briefly returned my smile. “You know, your new glasses look nice on you.”

“Thanks,” I managed to say without stuttering. How fantastic was this! I just got a compliment from William, even though it was a polite one, more like he wanted to return my favor.

Still, I was having an honest conversation with William. Amy wasn’t going to believe it. I had to keep talking to him.

“Did.. did you h… hear about the reporters out…. outside of school today?” I asked. “They almost cruh crushed me to death. That’s why… why I had to get nuh

glasses.”

I told him about being ambushed by tabloid reporters as I was leaving school that afternoon and how I needed to be rescued by Victor.

“I muh … might not be here nah…now if he hadn’t come to pic… pick me up,” I said. “I was shah sure the reporters were going to crush and stom…. stomp me to death.” I shivered, remembering how scary it had been.

“Victor used his Alpha voice?” William shook his head in disbelief. “I thought he would be too worried about ruining his image to do that.”

That’s true. It is considered impolite to use Alpha voice in public, but I didn’t say anything else about it.

Polite or not, Victor’s use of his Alpha’s voice saved my life, and I was grateful to him. William didn’t understand how bad the situation had been.

After William dropped me off at my father’s mansion, I ran to my room. I wanted to be alone to relive the ride home in my mind. I was giddy with joy from connecting with William. There was hope I would be with the man I loved.

Chapter 16

After William dropped me off at my father’s mansion, I ran to my room. I wanted to be alone to relive the ride home in my mind. I was giddy with joy from connecting with William. There was hope I would be with the man I loved.

And I found out that William is everything I thought he was. He is a gentle person with dreams of becoming something that doesn’t involve amassing great wealth and having power over other werewolves.

He was perfect. And Victor said he would help me capture William’s heart if I went along with the fake engagement. I now believed it could happen… it will happen!

The dinner, my beautiful new glasses, and the opportunity to ride home with William were all thanks to Victor. I needed to call him right away and agree to his plan.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Victor’s number.

“Hello, Daisy,” Victor said through the cell phone. “Was your ride home enjoyable?”

“Oh, yes,” I replied. “We talked the whole way home. And I owe it all to you. Thank you, Victor.

“Does that mean what I think it does?” There was that teasing tone in Victor’s voice again. It made me smile wider.

“I think so,” I replied. “But you have to ask me nicely.” I could tease too.

“Very well,” Victor said. “I’ll ask properly. Daisy Wilson, will you be my

fake fiancé?”

“Yes,” I replied and squealed with joy. A wedding was in my future, but Victor wouldn’t be the groom.

“Excellent,” Victor said. “There’s a pool party at William’s home this weekend. It’s another opportunity for you to further your relationship with him.”

“But all the popular Alpha kids from school will be there,” I said. “I don’t know if I can make myself go. I’ll be too nervous.”

“You will be fine,” Victor assured me. “I’m going with you to the party. We are engaged now.”

“Oops.I giggled. “I’m so happy I forgot for a minute.”

The line was quiet for several moments. What was wrong? “Victor, are you still there?” “Yes. I was getting another drink to celebrate our arrangement,” he replied. “Talk to

Benson tomorrow morning about someone getting you a fashionable yet casual outfit for the party, and you’ll need a swimsuit.”

Yikes, I needed to wear a swimsuit–in front of Alpha kids from school! I began to have doubts again about my being able to fit in.

“Are you sure this party is a good idea? What if the other kids make fun of me or talk about me behind my back like they do in school?”

“I’ll be there with you, Daisy,” he said. “They won’t dare disrespect or insult you. And Alpha males always want what another Alpha male has. I predict you’re going to be very popular at the party. William won’t be able to resist you.”

He was right. With Victor at my side, I would have nothing to fear. I should try to relax, enjoy myself, and make William like me even more.

“Okay,” I said. “Are you going to pick me up?” I didn’t want to walk into a party full of kids from my school by myself.

“Absolutely. You will make an entrance at the party on my arm,” Victor said. “I’m going to act like an attentive fiancé, except when I provide you an opportunity to speak to William alone.”

“It sounds wonderful, Victor,” I said. “And I’m sorry I doubted you.”

“There’s no apology necessary,” Victor said. “Sleep well, Daisy.”
