The Little Fairy

Chapter 5

I started my research on the human race, Don said to avoid FOX News; whatever that meant. I was horrified with what I found. Disease, war, murder, kidnapping, money embezzlement, robbery; the list goes on. The gods had abandoned the human race and I didn’t know how I could fix it. I was just one little fairy.

I guess I had been in here for a while because a knock came at the door, followed by Don with a small snack before dinner. “You look white as a ghost. I’m guessing you saw more than you wanted to.” He pulled up a chair next to me.

“Why are you people so cruel to one another?” Tears had started to form in my eyes, the reality of all this set in a little too hard.

“Honestly, to tell you the truth. Land, money, unrenewable resources like crude oil.” He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to massage the stress out.

“But you should all share! Mother Gaia gave us land to share and to live off of the resources she can provide sustainably.” I shot out of my chair, pacing around the room.

“Look, I understand what you’re trying to say, K, but there has also been a war on sustainability that we’re not winning. I agree with you, but there’s only so much people can do. People like the accessibility of man-made items.” He stood up with me, trying to ease my nerves.

“We have to do something!” I couldn’t contain my anger any longer.

“Kreya, like I said, there’s only so much we can do. You try to speak up against those in power, you get put down and silenced.”

“You mean they kill people trying to spread the truth?” It felt like whatever color I had left drained from my face.

“It’s not what I’m saying, but what I’m insinuating.” He placed a heavy hand on my shoulder, making me look into his eyes. “Don’t try and get yourself killed. You’re more valuable alive.” With that, he left to make dinner.

I couldn’t even think about eating. There was so much that I had to do. I had to warn the other fairies. Of course, The Elders already had to know what was going on, but I needed help. from every fairy on earth. From every person who knew the truth. I had to stop this.

I started looking up what Don called “conspiracy theorist podcasts” and told me if I really wanted to do this, that was the way to go because people don’t always believe in it, but those who did would follow me closely.

Don said I could go with Sarah to the store tomorrow to get stuff to start my research and what to tackle first. He said to start small and start local so I wouldn’t cause too much attention to come to me and my cause and make the whole thing come crashing down.

There was so much to do and a lifetime ahead of me, I didn’t know where to start. Where should I start, something simple like global warming? There were plenty of those going around. Maybe endangered species? I could start offering services for goods around the community. Don did say he needed some grunt work around the farm done. I could post an ad online with help from Sarah. Maybe someone could use a meal or two for the next couple of days, Don does make a good Bacon soup.

I studied well into the night, organizing and charting what I wanted to say and what I wanted to do, all the while thinking of my family and what they’re thinking happened to me. You never heard when a Fairy lost their wings, usually, the Elders just said they moved to a different village, but now I know that may not be the whole truth.

By the time I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer, the sun had started peeking through the curtains and the rooster outside started crowing. Shit, I mumbled to myself, unaware of the amount of time that I actually spent. I heard the door creak a little bit behind me, grey hairs appearing behind the door.

“I thought I heard you up. Did you get any sleep last night?” Don opened the door more, handing me a glass of water.

I looked around at the stacks of papers and books that surrounded me and shook my head. “I guess I just lost track of time.” My eyes were burning and Don started to become blurry with every blink.

“Why don’t you get some sleep and I’ll wake you when the kids get here.” He smiled and helped me into bed, setting the glass on the bedside table next to me. I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, I couldn’t even contain the sleep as it overcame me.
