The Lengthening Shadow

Chapter 37: The Next Quest

Everyone met in the dining hall to hear a speech by Vi’lle. The badger stood on a podium and looked out at the hall.

“Hear ye, hear ye! I know we have all endured much. The Bluff, even for me, was one of the scariest experiences of my life. But it is dead! Greenbloom is freed from this great threat! There is still much to do, but this part of the quest is over. Ra’vok stands no chance against us while the Verdancers survive. Korana thrives, and Glimroft is hard-pressed to defend itself. We have gained a victory, so let us give thanks!”

Everyone dug into the meal, but looked at it somewhat suspiciously, remembering Bernie. Still, it was not poisoned, and very delicious. Samuel sat with Glid, pondering the prophecy. There was no knowledge yet of Lark and what he could do. However, there was a nagging feeling of the shadow of Ra’vok always watching. Vi’lle organized a large force to train as an army. Samuel knew this, and wandered around training and enjoying Fernwood life again. The world was safe, and he rested easily.

Far away north, in Thazanc, Ra’vok felt Spera’s demise. He regarded it with no sympathy. That mink was too ambitious; he was bound to die sometime. Reports came in daily that Glimroft had been driven from Greenbloom, and Fernwood was safe. The Black Master was furious. He decided to get the next talisman, and soon. He would get his revenge. But not now. Samuel had won this round of the game.
