The Legacy of the Alpha King: Hiding his Secret Twins

Chapter 8 by Ebony Woods

Evelyn POV

Four Years Later Deep breath in, deep breath out I forgot how tranquil this place was. This was my first time returning to the lake since that barbaric day four years ago. My first break in four years.

Deep breath in, deep breath out A gentle gust of wind blows a few strands of my hair into my face, momentarily covering my eyes. As I brush the strands of hair away, I watch as the wind causes a small wave of water to crash on the lake’s pebble shore

I sigh deeply, as a flash back enters my mind from the day my parents were savagely killed. The cold image of their bodies left so inhumanely…left by a monster. My flashbacks were less

frequent nowadays but they still tortured me at nighttime regularly.

I hear laughter in the distance and the sprinting of tiny little feet heading in my direction. They end my flashback instantly’ Thank you Moon Goddess, thank you for my two children, thank you for showing me the power of a mother’s love

As they run towards me my heart

flutters with just how much love I have for them. I get up every day for them, they keep me breathing. Keep me living. They are my great loves. Mine only

Both blonde, Elspeth taking on my almost white blonde hair tone whereas Rex had a slightly darker shade of blonde just like

Thank you moon goddess, thank you for giving me my two children

“Mummy

My two little ones run up towards me, hands stretched out seeing who can touch me first. Elspeth in the lead but only because her brother Rex allows her to do so. He lets her believe she can win the race. They never cease to amaze me, how strong and how beautiful they were.

“My darlings!” I throw my arms wide and crouch down to greet my little angels as they reach me.

“Mummy, we found every item on the list Miss Smith set us.” Elspeth thrusts her piece of paper into my hand with. her rather large attempts at ticking off the items.

“Well done.” I smile warmly to them, at smile I only saved for them.

“Yeah well I found them first.” Rex tuts at his sister as usual, finding her showing off behaviour irritating. I found it cute that she wanted to be the best she could be.”Only because you cheated.” Elspeth sticks her tongue out at her brother Before she places her tongue back in her mouth, I’m astonished to find it isn’t the usual pinky red colour but now a bright blue shade

“Goddess Elspeth…” I tease.

“what has happened to your tongue?”

I open her mouth and gently pull her

tongue out to inspect it closely.

“Rex got us ice pops.” She admits guiltily

“Rex…” I pretend to reprimand him for helping himself to tonight’s desert.

“Mum, its hot and I need to take care of Elspeth right? She needed it to cool down.” He says to me as if he already ruled the roost

“You mustn’t set a bad example Rex.” I tut at him as I squeeze his cheek gently. earning a rolling of the eyes from him.

“Now there isn’t any desert for tonight.” I throw my hands out pretending to be in a state of conundrum.

“It’s okay Mummy….we found the chocolate too.” Elspeth whispers to me, placing her finger to her mouth for her secret news.

“Perhaps little children that help themselves to snacks shouldn’t get chocolate?” I muse.

“Please…”

“But Mummy…” They both sing out at the same time, both adopting those well rehearsed puppy eyes.

“I won’t do it again.” Rex pleads with me taking hold of my hand and standing me back up.

“Hmm… Come on you can both help me with dinner. ” I hold my hand out for Elspeth and the three of us slowly walk back to the lake house.

As we enter the house I find Noah sat working on his laptop by the decking. He always kept a close eye on us, he was just as protective of the children as I was.

“Uncle Noah.” Rex shouts as he lets go of my hand and runs ahead on the decking towards Noah.

“Daddy ” Elspeth softly calls to Noah and chases after Rex also onto the decking, her steps not as loud as her brother’s.

“Rex, not so loud. “I call forward to the two rascals.

“It’s fine, I was just finishing up They can be as loud as they like well Elspeth can be ” He teases looking to Rex with a raised eyebrow Rex mirrors Noah’s facial expression and rushes to him pretending to attack him Noah was fast, he grabs Rex by his ankle and playfully hangs him upside down.

“ROAR.” Elspeth joins in, pretending the be the big scary wolf needing to save her brother. She reaches up to tickle Noah to defend her brother

“Ah oh no…I’ve been attacked.” Noah feigns injury and slowly falls to the ground, keeping both Rex and now Elspeth, safe in his arms.

Noah had helped me raise them, he had been there for every moment. Even at the birth, he kept me going when I thought all strength had lost me. To Elspeth, Noah was her daddy. She idolised him and he was the only one that could read her bedtime story to her. He also had to use the pretend monster spray under her bed every night before she went to sleep.

Whereas Rex saw Noah more as an uncle. He knew deep inside that Noah wasn’t his father, that subconsciously a beta born couldn’t have an alpha. Rex didn’t officially know his status but in time he’ll start to question why he feels different to Elspeth, why he knows he is an alpha’s son.

Elspeth’s playful scream brings me out of my thoughts and I chuckle as I watch them both climb on Noah pretending to now have captured a dragon.

“Come on kids, time to finish your project before dinner.” Miss Smith, our housekeeper calls out to the children. She was amazing with the children and had also started to prep them for starting schooling

“Mummy, Uncle Noah .don’t eat without us.” Rex jumps of Noah and runs to Miss Smith.

“Rex…why can’t you call Daddy Daddy?” She tuts at her brother as she takes Miss Smith’s hand and they leave the room arguing, as normal, amongst themselves.

“They’ve grown so quickly!” Noah chuckles as I wait until they have left, before I remove the warmth in my face. The warm appearance I reserve only for my children is really the mask I wear every day.

“Yes, I am grateful to the Moon Goddess for blessing me with both of them.” I murmur more a thankful prayer than in response to Noah.

“I’m loving their little personalities. Elspeth is just like you, the little princess…whereas Rex he certainly is unique”

I don’t respond, he is unique, he is the destined alpha king and one day I would have to tell him. One day, when he is a lot older

I take a seat inside the lake house on the couch looking out to the view of the lake I take my shoes off and slowly start to massage my feet Noah walks over to me and sits next to me, pulling my feet into his lap and massaging them for me.

“I’d like to think the children see me as a father figure…as someone who would always look out for them?” Noah says as he continues to ease the pain in my feet.

“Of course they do…” I close my eyes and tilt my head back, enjoying the relaxation.

“Evelyn…” He sighs which causes me to open my eyes to look at him. He was frowning as he kept his face low, concentrating on his hands.

“You’ve spent the past four years rebuilding the Silver Moon pack, even expanding it…I want to be here for you, for the children. I want to be by your side….to be a father to your children, and a mate to you.

I have to keep my heart steady, to keep it from beating too fast. I didn’t have time for romance, I only had time for revenge. Noah thought that when I rebuilt my parent’s pack that I would stop, that I would be contempt. But I wasn’t, I wanted the Red Stone Pack to feel the pain I have felt for the past four years. I couldn’t stop, not now. The expansion was to give packs the opportunity to break away from the Red Stone pack, break away from its tyranny.

“The kids will always be yours as much as they are mine, but I can’t think romance Noah, not when there is still so much to do.”

“I thought you say that.” He shrugs, as if he already knew my answer but would ask anyway.

“Have you ever stopped Evelyn and asked yourself whether it was the expansion of the pack that stopped us being together?” He sighs.

Noah.. I ..”

“And not the fact that you haven’t truly gotten over Reuben?”
