Chapter 46 by Ebony Woods
Evelyn POV
Noah offers to check my facial wound out and leads me away from the kitchen. He takes me into the privacy of Reuben’s office where I lean against the desk.
Not really wanting to stand, not really wanting to sit. I was torn between wanting to go to the cells and not wanting to go to the cells, not wanting to ever see her face again.
Is this what our lives would be like now? Someone, some pack always trying to threaten my children to get to me. Is this the legacy I have created for them… To keep an eye in-front but also an eye behind.
How could she want the status of Luna so much she would put an innocent child in danger. Was the Red Stone pack alliance really worth that much to her. Was it also worth that much to him?
“Evelyn, you need to calm down.” Noah demands as he lifts my chin up to look at my face. Why, why should I stay calm?
Why can’t I let my wolf be this angry. Again we are the victims of the murderous might of the Red Stone pack. Vicky’s actions are the exact reason why there needs to be another alliance. To keep them in order.
I’m not afraid of them, of him. I won’t let another pack go through what I have gone through, not if I can help it.
“I…can’t.” My wolf has all but shifted, one more wrong move and I’ll shift right here in this office. I didn’t need medical treatment, I could already feel myself healing. But Noah was right to get me out of the kitchen. to give me a chance to cool off.
Not that it was helping. I smell his scent as soon as the office door clicks open. It’s sweet leathery smell trying to reduce my inner turmoil. I start to breathe through my mouth instead but not before earning a chuckle from Noah.
“Help yourself to my office why don’t you.” His cold arrogant voice comes as he walks in and sits down at his desk, my back to him.
“The bleeding has stopped.” Noah quietly says to me.
“Is she okay?” Reuben asks Noah, as if I wasn’t even here.
“She is fine!” I raise an eyebrow at him and turn behind to look at him. He smirks looking me up and down, more animalistic. Something he has never done before.
“I’ll go check on Rex and Elspeth.”
Noah’s voice enters my mind.
“No don’t leave me alone with him…”
“You need to talk to him.”
“And tell him what exactly?”
“I don’t know…start with the truth. With how you feel.” He frowns at me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
“He’s a dick!” I sigh, he was right…but it didn’t mean I had to like it. “Oh yes that he is. But he’s still digesting the news that Vicky kidnapped his son..”
“He didn’t know he was their father.” I huff.
“No, but he does now.”
“Can I have my office back?” He growls, annoyed at our mind-linking.
“I’ll check on the twins.” Noah says as he exits the room.
A tense silence forms between us. My back is still turned to him as I’m perched against his desk. My wolf is still dominating and if I move, it will give her that final inch of control to take over.
“Aren’t you going to follow lover boy?”
I close my eyes….breathe in, and breathe out.
Don’t let him get to you Evelyn.
He has a way to set you off like nobody else.
“If…I…move, I’ll…shift.” I say very slowly, controlled. “You hold on to your emotions too much. Which is why moments like this, catch up on you.”
“Don’t tell me how to feel…”
“I’m not telling you how to feel, I’m saying it’s okay to get angry and let your wolf take control. We can’t be prim and proper all the time.” He sighs at my friction towards him.
“I’m not prim and proper.”
“Could of fooled me.” He mutters as he pushes his chair out and I can hear his footsteps, heading towards me.
He is now facing me, perched against a brown leather sofa in his office. He leans back slightly, crossing his arms and looking at me. “You never said she pulled you down the stairs?” He looks to me with a frown.
“Are you being serious?” I snap, my eyes close again. Perhaps he wouldn’t mind having his office redecorated. Perhaps like he says I should let my wolf out and let her out here! Let her run wild in here.
“What part of me being passed out at the bottom of the stairs was not a red flag to you?”
“Tell me what happened…”
“Fours years too late Reuben! You should have asked me back then.” He should have asked me exactly what happened at the time. He should of believed me! Me, his wife.
My eyes are now open but I look down to the floor, what could I have done differently? This wasn’t on me. This was on him for siding with her.
“I’m listening now.” He softly says, as he walks towards me. Any closer and I’ll be trapped between him and the desk. I refuse to look up at him until he touches my chin with his thumb and lifts my face so that my eyes are looking up into his.
“Tell me…” His voice remains soft, welcoming my opportunity to tell him. I watch the intensity of his eyes for a moment, bright blue with the promise of unleashing a storm upon anyone that wronged him.
“Do you remember the Moon conference I organised, when I was helping Candice and Michelle take down the fairy lights?” I start.
“I do.”
“I had a dizzy spell…” His eyes snap down to my stomach before concentrating back on my face. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was on a step ladder and he caught me as I lost my footing.
“…I went to see Noah. He checked me over and told me I was pregnant. I was so excited, I came directly to you, to tell you….I had finally given you what you wanted from our marriage…an heir. I walked in here to find the two of you embracing.”
“She had just survived the destruction of her pack, I was comforting her…”
“Reuben, she had her teeth in you from the beginning. From that moment, deep down I knew I wouldn’t win, that I would never be her.”
“Be her? What are you talking about?” His eyes furrow, confused by my comment. I shake my head, I don’t know why he hasn’t marked her. Was it because of the legality of us being married? Well, we can sort that….
“You’re getting angry again…” He takes a step forward, and starts to stroke my arm. His touch instantly calming me. But a new anger forms from the irritating affect he seems to now have on my wolf.
“She saw the bottle of nutrients for pregnancy and confronted me about being pregnant….” I continue calmly, explaining how Vicky found out about my pregnancy.
“She made it very clear you wouldn’t want to be with me, even with the child. That she was what you wanted, that she had come back to be the Luna. Our baby….” Because at the time I didn’t know I was carrying twins.
..was a problem to her, and she needed that tie with you gone.”
For the first time I have known him he is speechless. His eyes keep flickering between my eyes and my mouth, waiting for me to speak again.
“She’s clearly been putting a side team together to undermine my authority as the Alpha of the Silver Moon pack and has been planning the kidnapping of children for ransoms.”
He moves his arm away from me and starts to pace around his office, letting the information sink in. Oddly without his touch my anger starts to rise up again. Outside of the office Elspeth is screaming for her daddy, screaming for Noah.
“I need to go check on Elspeth…”
“Daddy?” I can hear her voice as she runs into the front of the alpha house. “I’m here princess.” Noah’s calm voice greets her outside the office door.
“I’m her father.” He seethes at me through gritted teeth, just above a whisper. His aura was becoming more prominent in our close setting.
“Reuben, you refused to protect her from that woman even when she was just a dot on a screen. You don’t deserve to be her father.” I seethe out in return, our auras were mixing and creating a storm of emotions that were four years overdue.
“This is good, get it out Evelyn. You need to get all this anger out. What else huh?” He rounds on me, coming into my personal space.
“What else do you blame me for? You left me, you ran away with your beta.” He points to the door, gesturing towards Noah.
“You forced my hand, I couldn’t stay not with a monster and the she devil. They needed protecting even from you.” I shout, he wanted my anger then he was going to bloody get it.
“Not willing to take any blame are you! If you hadn’t of run away, if you hadn’t of stolen packs, she wouldn’t have
done this.” He was so close in my face that if I wasn’t an Alpha’s daughter and an Alpha, I would be whimpering by his anger and powerful aura. But I’m just as angry, my aura just as strong.
“Don’t you dare put that on me.” I’m beyond angry now and need to lash out at him. I raise my hand as I build up momentum to slap him across the face.
My anger getting the better of me, my wolf winning. He grips my wrist mid air and slams it down behind me on the desk. Shit he was fast.
He grabs my other hand and in his tight grip, locks them behind my back as he leans forward towering over me.
He is so close I can feel his breath upon my face. His eyes flash between his bright sea blue and that of his wolf’s, a dark sea storm blue.
His closeness is…intoxicating. Keep it together Evelyn.
He licks his lips and I have to clench my lower core to stop myself from being aroused. His scent and touch was causing strange sensations to me.
