Chapter 37 by Ebony Woods
Evelyn POV
“Well, are you coming or not?” Reuben huffs at me as he already starts to leave the alpha house.
“I’ll drive!” Alpha Pierce declares, racing ahead of Reuben into the courtyard. I didn’t even know he was here.
I look to Noah and Elspeth, I can’t just leave her again!
“Mummy I’ll be fine, go…Rex is waiting for you.” She doesn’t really give me leaving the time of day as she puts her head back down and carries on with her maths work.
“Go, keep me posted.” Noah stands up, as he walks out of the kitchen in the direction of the courtyard, Milo hot on his tail.
“Okay baby, be good. I won’t be long.” I place a kiss on top of her head before I look at the females in the room.
Cassandra, Michelle and Candice all look at me with kindness. I’m not sure where Vicky is, if she was in the room I’d be less inclined to leave Elspeth,
“I know…I’ll stay. I promise, I’ll keep her away from her.” Candice seems to understand my
reservations.
I rush out to the courtyard grabbing my mobile and handbag on the way. I made sure to keep my charger in my bag now, just in case.
“Pierce, you are not driving!”
“Reuben, your cars have your emblem on them. They aren’t inconspicuous and will be seen a mile off. My cars are designed for moving under radar…a lesson you should learn.”
Reuben doesn’t even bother thinking of a response, his irritation with Alpha Pierce’s presence
escalating into anger.
“Fine!” He walks to Pierce’s car, which is a grey saloon, nothing special.
“But I’m driving!”
“That’s fine with me, I’ll sit in the back with Alpha Evelyn.” I hear Pierce and Reuben argue like
they are a married couple.
I turn to Noah who was standing next to Milo discussing something together.
“I’m uncomfortable with you going!” Noah says to me as Milo walks away to give us some privacy.
“I know, but I can’t stay here and wait. I need to do what I can to get him back.”
“I know, just be careful.” He urges as he places his hand to my face, tucking a stray hair behind
my ear.
“We’ve got to go!” Reuben growls as he steps away from the driving door and opens a back passenger door.
“Keep her safe.” I plead with Noah calling back to him as I rush towards the car. I brush past
Reuben to enter the back seat. His scent tickling at my nostrils. I sit down only for him to shoo me over with his hand. I move to the other side as he joins me in the back seat.
He looks at me as I quirk an eyebrow at him.
“What’s wrong sweetheart, afraid my hands might wander!” He smirks at me.
“Nope, because your fingers would be broken before they cross the middle seat!” My threat wasn’t as fierce as I wanted it to be as I had to wind down the window due to his scent suffocating the air in the car.
We must have been driving for three hours before Pierce stops to get petrol. The two of them kept bickering in the car and I had a headache now from the constant noise. They were worse than children.
Pierce was filling up the car at the pump whilst Reuben remained in the car with me.
“How much further?”
“Maybe another hour depending on traffic.” He replies, his face glued to a map app on his phone. I could see him zooming in to a location and counting buildings on the map.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m looking at the location. Getting an idea of possible threats…” He shrugs before looking up into my eyes. That wasn’t an obvious thing to me, why didn’t I think of that?
“Let me guess, you would have just run in without researching.”
“No I would do what it takes to rescue my son.”
“You’d get yourself captured in the process and then what use would you be. How would you rescue Rex then?”
He wasn’t wrong but his deliverance came across as arrogant and condescending.
“It’s a good thing you have me sweetheart!”
“I don’t have you and I don’t need you Reuben. If you weren’t here, Noah and my warriors would be.”
“Keep telling yourself that. Keep denying that you need me.”
I snarl at him and he is saved by the beautiful smile of Alpha Pierce as he opens the car door.
“I’ll just pay. Do you want anything?”
“I’ll come in. I need water, I have a sudden headache.” I open my own door and slam it shut, Reuben really knew how to press my buttons.
As Pierce and I shortly return back to the car, I decide to sit in the front passenger sit. I’ll still have to smell his scent but at least I won’t need to look at him.
“Okay, we are three miles from the village now. It’s a human village so there shouldn’t be guards out. But maybe we should hide the car and do the rest on foot or wolf form. Just to air on the side caution?” Pierce suggests, with Reuben and I both agreeing.
Not that he knew much or the real identity of Rex’s father and that he had been in the same car as him for the past four hours, but I was very grateful that Pierce was here. He helped to ease the awkward silences between Reuben and I, his natural warmth and humour infectious. I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to be as jovial as him.
He was ballsy though I’ll give him that. I would have hidden the car in a field or a wooded area but not Pierce. He parked the car in a driveway. I think even Reuben was impressed by his nodding in approval.
“Won’t they come back?” I whisper as we exit the car. Pierce goes to his car boot and pulls out a bag.
“They must be on holiday, look…every other house still has their bins out waiting for collection, except them. But if they do, then the car can’t be traced back to me. No Kingdom emblems…” He smirks at Reuben before he grabs my hand and pulls me towards the back garden.
“We can shift in the fields behind the gardens. It’s dark, there’s no lighting. No one will see us.”
As we jump over a garden’s back fence Pierce starts to strip off his clothes, I turn as he places his clothes into the bag.
“Not big on nudity eh?” He chuckles but stops as Reuben growls.
“Perhaps as her husband I don’t like other men stripping in front of her!”
For once I actually appreciated his harsh tone. It also created a small flutter in my heart that he might be possessive.
“Evelyn…” Reuben gently touches my shoulder and I turn around to see Pierce has shifted into a glorious deep black alpha wolf. His fangs pearly white, I’d expect nothing less.
”
…Pierce and I will run ahead. When you are ready shift, place your clothes in the bag and bring the bag with you. We will wait for you.” His tone is soft, steady and strong. I nod in understanding and turn just as he also starts to strip.
Nudity wasn’t a problem for me, but being naked in front of Reuben was. Images of the way he ran out after our night together flash back into my mind.
He starts to remove his clothes and I turn away, but not before glimpsing at the large winged tattoo on his back. His body is as impressive as it was four years ago, if anything even more muscular.
I feel a snout brush the back of my legs and I turn to see his chocolate brown wolf looking up at me.
In comparison to Pierce’s wolf, Reuben was larger and wider. You could tell his was born to be an Alpha King. I knew instantly that Rex would be a similar sized wolf.
Rex POV
I had been in the back of a van for a few hours I’m guessing until they finally stopped and let me out. I was now in some kind of abandoned human pub. I could tell it was a pub from the barrels and the large bar when we entered. Donnie had taken Harry and I into one on a drive back from a football match. I had an orange juice and a packet of crisps.
It smelled in here, damp and old beer stained carpets. My bed had been placed into a room
upstairs Elspeth would hate it in here. She would say it was haunted and would insist on sharing my bed with me. I miss Mum and Elspeth. I could feel Elspeth’s worry for me through our twin bond but I kept trying to push back with calmness Letting her know I was okay.
They hadn’t blindfolded me again and they also spoke to someone on speaker phone whilst we were travelling in the van. The voice seemed concerned that they weren’t moving quickly enough and shouted swear words at them a few times.
Hopefully Mum and Uncle Noah are close and found the clothes I left behind at the quarry.
