Chapter 33 by Ebony Woods
Noah POV
Vicky, always in her high heels, struts into the alpha house following Reuben, she seemed on a mission.
“Cupcakes? Hhmm I’m sure Michelle would help with that.” Evelyn places a soft kiss on Elspeth cheek as she starts to walk them both into the house.
“Of course I will poppet.” Michelle winks as she takes Elspeth from Evelyn and heads towards the kitchen with Miss Smith closely following.
As we enter the house, Vicky slams the office door as I hear her seethe something inaudible to Reuben. His growl didn’t seem to appreciate her slamming of his own office door and I turn to find Evelyn frowning slightly.
“Nate, in here now!” Reuben roars through the closed office door and his beta follows his rude command.
“What happened?” I whisper to Evelyn as Donnie and I follow her into the main living room
It had taken a change since Evelyn lived here. Subtle changes to the decor to match more Vicky’s
taste than Evelyn’s.
Evelyn was more earthy, more neutral. Vicky was loud and I’m surprised Reuben has allowed the clashing bright pink and yellow zebra print cushions on the cream L shaped sofa.
“I ran into a slight issue!” Evelyn keeps her voice also in hushed tones as Donnie and I huddle
around her.
A growl escapes me as I notice blood on Evelyn’s shirt collar.
“Why is there blood on your top?” I pull at her top to show her.
“The man I met…he…well…he didn’t have the best welcome.”
“He hurt you?” Donnie’s nostrils flare, his alpha was injured and unguarded. This went against our very nature.
“I can defend myself!” She growls at Donnie, reminding him who the alpha was.
“I’m sorry Alpha.” He lowers his head, submitting his neck to her.
“What did you find out?” I press for information.
“Nothing, only the same demand that I need to break my alliance. I don’t understand….” She checks the doorway and lowers her voice.
“…if Reuben isn’t involved then why do they want the Silver Moon group alliance dispersed?”
“Goddess knows. We found evidence of suspicious activity at a quarry in the west. One of the Red Stone pack’s reported it.” I inform her.
“Does Reuben know?”
“The news came in this morning, I imagine Nate is updating him now.”
“I think we should leave..as soon as possible. Donnie can you round up the men to be ready in the. courtyard as soon as possible?”
“Yes Alpha!” He nods before leaving us.
“Leave? What about information on Rex?” I question as soon as we are alone again.
“We will follow up the report on the quarry but Noah, the longer we stay the more likely someone is going to learn the truth. Can you imagine if enemies of Reuben wanted to find the lost Red Stone heir? I just have this really bad feeling we need to leave before anyone finds out.”
“Evelyn I…” I had the opposite feeling, I felt as if staying close to Reuben would give us a better opportunity of knowing whether he was truly involved.
“Of course, you can stay if you want….to bond with Cassandra.”
“No, I follow you, I protect you and the kids.” This was my promise to her, to them. I swore it under the full moon they were born on. The moon goddess watching my oath. I couldn’t break it.
“I will have a word with Nate before we leave, I think he would contact me if there was any updates.”
“I’ll grab Elspeth’s clothes from upstairs and I’ll be in the courtyard.”
Reuben POV
“What news Nate?” I requested as I sat at my desk, reaching into my drawer for a smoke. I couldn’t get it lit quick enough.
Her driving was erratic and she did it on purpose to piss me off. I’d spent many nights as a teenager driving around the local towns terrorising the human population and being part of the night time racing lifestyle….but fuck! Evelyn brought a new fear into me the way she was driving.
Was it because she was the mother to my children? I mean I don’t know why my wolf was acting like this, if she died I could claim parental rights for both children.
Did it come back to the tingles? Every time I touch her…a feeling I couldn’t understand came over
- me.
“One of our packs in the west reported unusual activity near a quarry. It’s the only lead we have.” Nate reports handing me the file of information.
“Who else knows?” I ask him.
“The beta and head warrior Donnie, they were with me when the report came in.”
“This is the first I am hearing of this?” Vicky scornfully remarks at Nate.
“And I don’t understand why you are helping her Reuben. Send her on her way and while you’re at it, ask for a divorce.” She pouts as she leaves the office, pulling her phone out of her pocket.
“What happened?” Nate turns to me after watching Vicky leave my office.
“A fucking disaster Nate! I got to the meeting point to find her half unconscious and bleeding profusely from her head, with hand marks on her neck from the attacker pinning her to the ground….” A growl rattles from my chest at the memory.
“She’s pissed at me for scaring the attacker away, for losing the information but he wasn’t their to. give her details. He was clearly sent to shake her up, to force her more into breaking up her alliance.” I run my fingers through my hair and pull at the ends.
“You gave her medical care?” He frowns before crossing his arms across his chest.
“It was Alpha Pierce’s lands she drove straight into wasn’t it? He made it apparent he enjoyed her error in judgment.” I sigh out, still pissed off at her flirting with Pierce.
“Alpha, I’m confused…”
“When I got to the cars with an unconscioùs Evelyn, Pierce and some of his men were waiting for us. He took us straight to the hospital and his doctors gave Evelyn medical attention. But now I owe him!” I stub my cigarette out before lighting another one.
“Then Alpha Evelyn’s warriors need to check this quarry out.”
“No, I need my men there.” I correct my beta,
“Why? I don’t mean to cross the line Alpha, I like Alpha Evelyn, and actually Betà Noah for that matter but they are our enemy. They’ve spent years building up an alliance against your kingdom, threatening war should we cross a line. Why help them especially when you aren’t mated with your own heirs yet?” He has a good point and I knew I had to tell him.
“If I tell you, you are sworn to secrecy.” I say through the mind–link. I couldn’t hear anyone in the hallway and Evelyn’s heartbeat was still in the lounge with Noah’s and Donnie’s, but I still couldn’t risk being over heard.
“I understand Alpha.”
“Evelyn was pregnant when she left the pack. The twins are mine.”
“What?” His eyes flash to that of his wolf’s.
“The boy, Rex. He is my son and future Alpha King.”
“But the girl calls Noah Daddy.” He shakes his head as if not believing what he is hearing.
“Don’t I fucking know it.” I roar, my clenched fist hitting the desk, leaving a small dent from the powerful impact.
I could see his mind working at a thousand times a second.
“I’ll go to the quarry, if I’m caught I will claim you sent me to qualify the lead on the reported recent movements. If it’s a dead end, you are close enough to quickly form a new plan with our
warriors at your command.”
“Very well….” I agree but am cut off by movement outside my office window that over looks the courtyard. Nate walks to the window to get a better view.
“Her warriors are gathering.. Are they leaving?” His head whips to me. I stand up and walk out of the office, catching Evelyn just before she walks out of the front door.
“Going somewhere?” I quirk an eyebrow at her.
“Yes, we are leaving.”
“Don’t let her leave.” My wolf howls in my head.
“A word before you do…” I gesture for her to enter my office.
With the rolling of her eyes which amuses me inwardly, she enters my office. But not alone, Noah and Donnie follow her closely.
“I’ve asked Nate here to check out the quarry report. If you send men it will look suspicious and could…”
“Don’t tell me how to command my own warriors.” She seethes through gritted teeth. I liked riling her up,
up, I liked getting this side out of her. I could annoy her all day long but I had to remember an innocent boy’s life was at risk here.
Η
“Nate will be going as a trusted tracker. He will report back to me as soon as he has intel. If he thinks that is where Rex is then I will send my warriors in. But if you send your fighters in now it will all be for nothing.” She had to realise I was the Alpha King for a reason and knew what I was doing.
She glares at me, seemingly discussing the option with her wolf. I take a step towards her, placing my hand’s out trying not to scare off the wolf before me. She hasn’t even changed, her blood has stained her shirt and I have to bite down a growl from the memory of her bleeding out on the
warehouse floor.
“I‘ join Beta Nate, with your permission Alpha.” Donnie offers to Evelyn but she seems reluctant to agree. Their eyes glaze over as they enter a mind–link, a subject they clearly don’t want to be
said out loud.
“I don’t have all day!” I mutter. Nate was ready to leave, they were wasting time.
