The Legacy of the Alpha King: Hiding his Secret Twins

Chapter 23 by Ebony Woods

Evelyn POV

I couldn’t seem to focus, I was in real danger of unveiling our shifter community by shifting in front of the humans. My wolf needed to search the area, to smell for any clues. She needed out but I was working hard on reining her in.

She was whining in my head, desperate for her pup back in my arms. I’ve never not been away from Rex or Elspeth, not even one bedtime. I was always there to tuck them in, always their

constant.

Was he okay? Was he injured! No we mustn’t think like that.

I look at my dead warriors, why didn’t I feel their pack link? I should have felt their deaths, their sad breaking of the pack link. That was one of my jobs as an alpha, to feel each pack member. Their joys but also their sorrows. How long had they been laying like this?

“The note Donnie, take the note!” I order.

He had placed it on the ground, he wasn’t thinking straight. He was staring at his comrade’s dead bodies. So cruelly shot in the head.

The note needed to come with us. We could get it checked by our own forensic contacts. If the police found it, they would get involved with a kidnapping of a child. They would hinder my attempts at finding Rex and destroying who has done this.

“Alpha, Noah is here!” Donnie’s voice filters through my head to prewarn me of Noah’s arrival, but I could already hear their fast and heavy footsteps.

I could also hear the police and ambulance sirens gaining distance on the scene before me.

I needed to leave, I needed to find my son.

“Evelyn?” Noah’s eyes flash to that of his wolf’s before he places his sunglasses on. He doesn’t say anything, he just looks at the two murdered pack members, well trained warriors of his, dead on the ground.

“There was a note!” I coldly say through the mind-link to Noah.

I could feel my soul darkening again, my soldier self returning. I would need that ruthless cold part of me to get my son back, to return the future alpha of the Silver Moon pack!

“What the fuck happened? Why didn’t I feel the link break? Why didn’t I feel their deaths?” I roar in my office at the round meeting table. I called in an emergency meeting as soon as I got back to the pack grounds.

But not until I saw my daughter. I needed to hold Elspeth, I needed to see her for my own sake. She didn’t understand why I was being so silly, why I was kissing her cheeks and head repeatedly. Why I wouldn’t let her out of my sight.

She was in the kitchen with Miss Smith, both chaperoned by two warriors who I ordered to keep any eye on them no matter what.

“This was a targeted attack. Did they know where Rex was going? Or was it a fluke?” Rex and I only planned on the cinema today, so how could anyone else know what our future movements were. Unless we had a leak in the pack or they were watching our movements.

“We don’t know Alpha yet, we are trying to source intelligence….” Donnie responds but I cut him off, my anger eating up at me.

“That’s not good enough!”

I take a deep breath in, and deep breath out.

I sit back down on my chair to talk more calmly but my hands were shaking from the adrenaline pumping through my system.

“Are we one hundred percent certain our borders are secure, that we haven’t been watched?” I place my head into my hands, trying to soothe the sharp pain in my temples.

Noah had remained at the scene, he was to liaise with the police and then he was going to discreetly track the area in wolf form, seeing if any evidence was left behind.

“Our borders are secure alpha, this must have been a fluke. Or, they waited for the car to join the main road, far enough off our pack grounds to avoid being detected.” Donnie reassures me, his security detail was unrivalled.

He was right, they must have been waiting for a chance on the main road.

“I want this ransom note sent off for investigation. You contact me the moment you have the results!” I order at Donnie, who in Noah’s absence from this meeting, was stepping up to the beta duties.

“I will do Alpha, I’ll get it sent immediately.”

Oh Rex, stay strong for mummy darling. Mummy is coming and I’ll get you out of there, I’ll keep

you safe.

Dear Moon Goddess please watch over my boy, please keep him safe, keep him unharmed. I’d do anything to get him back, anything.

Just name the price. If it’s my life for his, I’d do it in an instant. A mother’s love is the most powerful thing in the world. Let him know that, let him know I am coming. That I won’t leave him.

I had finished the emergency meeting, I was desperate to see Elspeth. Even only on the other side of the brick wall in the kitchen she was too far from me.

I was sitting on a wooden bench in the garden watching Elspeth play with some of the pack member’s cats that always visited our home.

My mind was all over the place and my heart was still beating at an incredible rate. I was struggling to stay sat down, my muscles were spasming for me to do something. My mind trying to keep horrible thoughts of Rex in pain at bay.

I was in my own hell, I was useless….all I could do was wait. Wait for Noah to return and then put a plan in place after that.

I was praying to the moon goddess already, hoping she may hear me but as the sun remained burning high in the summer’s sky, she might not have heard, I’ll have to keep praying tonight

when the sun is gone and the moon shines brightest.

“Mummy, where’s Rex?” Elspeth suddenly asks as she continues to stroke the cats that are taking it in turns to sit on her lap.

“Rex….” I have to clear my throat, my voice is croaky from the emotions hidden behind it.

“Rex’s car was in an incident and we think other people have taken in.”

“Why?” She screws her nose up.

“I don’t know baby, they want something from me. But it’s okay, he is fine!” I have to believe that, otherwise there was just no point living anymore.

“He is fine. He is a bit scared but he is being a brave boy for you.” She says with such clarity and confidence that it gives some relief to my heavy heart, just a small amount.

“He is?”

“Yes I can feel him! He’ll be okay mummy!” She smiles up at me as I wipe away the silent tears that fall from my eyes.

They’ve had this before, some kind of twin link. It made their games of hide and seek very short. Elspeth often found Rex hiding, waiting to jump out at me or Noah for a game. Every time I asked them about their link they just shrugged their shoulders. They couldn’t explain it, and I stopped asking. I didn’t want them to think their special gift was odd.

As I went to respond to her, I could hear the shrieking sounds of a car braking outside the front before Noah runs into the alpha house.

“Evelyn?” He calls for me and I whip Elspeth up in my arms before running into the house to find Noah.
