The Journal of Memories

Chapter We are the Same

We sat on the balcony listening to the quiet breeze and asking each other whatever questions we can think of.

I was leaning back in the window sill, looking at the sky, “So... do you know what happened? Like why is everyone... the way that they are?”

She just smiled, “To be completely honest I can’t remember anything past the last two days. I don’t know how to explain it but I remember parts in like visions or something.”

I looked over at her, “Is it like shocks and headaches?”

“Yeah exactly! Then, my nose bleeds after it like when your head was hurting... I thought it was just me.”

I laughed, “And I thought I was the only one who could talk. I guess we are the same in this weird universe.”

She laughed too, “So, is this hell or something?”

I shook my head, “Nah, I haven’t seen the devil yet. I will let you know though.”

We both laughed again then calmed down.

She hesitated for a second, “I noticed my eyes are brighter than I remember... I looked in the mirror and they also dim down whenever I get the shocks.”

So our eye color is part of the shocks?

“Mine are also brighter than I remembered. I haven’t seen them dim down yet though... I guess that is just another thing to add to the list of things to figure out,” I chuckled.

“I don’t know it’s weird. I have been walking around for two days and you are the only person that actually acts like a person. Everyone else just stares off in the distance like I am not even there... Some are even violent.”

Violent?

“You have been walking for two days?! I haven’t left the house much... I found ten people in my kitchen eating food though. They seemed more scared than violent.”

She sighed, “Yeah when I woke up or whatever you call that. I was laying under some rebel from a collapsed building. I decided to walk around to find anyone who could at least talk. I stumbled upon a giant mob of people a day ago, they were huddled around some food on the ground. I tried to talk to them but they growled like animals then started chasing me. I was scared so I ran but I tripped and they caught up, scratching my arms and clothes... I guess I threatened their food or something. It was weird how animal like they were. Then I made it to the house across the street and hid in the backyard to stay away from them... When I woke up, Macy was licking my face and I found you.”

Thank god for that weird dog.

I was shocked, “I am sorry you had to go through that. I was actually thinking of going into the city to find someone but here you are.”

Her eyes sparkled and she smiled, “Here I am.”

“So do you have any family?”

She shrunk down a bit, “I can’t remember... I hope I do though. They are probably looking for me somewhere out there.”

“Yeah, I hope my parents are doing the same. I kind of wish I didn’t remember them though. I keep worrying if they are safe or if they even remember me.”

She grabbed my hand, “I am sorry. I hope you find them soon.”

“I hope you do too.”

She lifted her hands to her head and gritted her teeth.

What the hell?

“Hey are you okay?”

She stayed that way for a few moments then she wiped the blood off from under her nose.

Oh the weird headache thing.

“Yeah I am fine,” She sniffled and wiped her eyes that teared up.

Is she crying?

“Are you sure? You can talk to me.”

“Yeah, it’s nothing,” She smiled but it didn’t look natural. More like forced.

We sat in silence for a few moments.

Out of nowhere I got another headache.

Why am I getting one again!?

My dad was sitting at the table scribbling in his journal.

He was mumbling to himself, “We can stop it. I know we can. Whatever it is, it is something big. But we just don’t have enough time to figure out what.”

I came back to reality to see Luna holding onto my arm, “Are you okay?”

I took a deep breath, “Yeah... I think I just saw a way to find out what is happening.”

She looked eager, “How? Do you think we will be able to get our memories back?”

“I don’t know. My dad is a ....” Another shock, “Technology scientist. He spoke about something big happening and there not being enough time. If someone knows something it would be his company. Last thing I remember he was at...” Shock, “work... It’s probably nothing.”

Her eyes grew wide, “Do you remember where he works?”

I thought hard for a second and shook my head, “Sorry for some reason I can’t remember anything else about him...”

She just hugged me, “It’s okay. It is still worth a try. We can leave tomorrow.”

I pulled back, “But we will just be wondering the city with no clue what direction to go.”

She smiled, “What else are we going to do? There is no rush, right? Who knows, you might remember something along the way.”

I already love her optimism.

I smiled back at her, “Tomorrow then?”

Her smile grew bigger, “Tomorrow!”
