The Journal of Memories

Chapter Running

We both took off in a full sprint to the road. My lungs began to burn from the short breaths I was taking. My footsteps were loud in my ears with each time they hit the ground. Luna was right beside me and I grabbed her hand. I knew I wasn’t going to lose her, but I want to make sure she was there. She kept pace with me while Macy was running next to us.

The guards were chasing us now and were pretty good at keeping up.

We need to find somewhere to hide or lose them.

I heard a loud bang and looked back to see one of them with smoke coming out of their gun muzzle.

We have to get out of here.

We were out of the alley now and were running around cars. I looked back again to see about ten more were chasing us. More shots flew by us.

Out of nowhere there was weird machines flying above us.

Shock.

Drones. We can't get away from those.

Luna looked up then at me, “Can you hand me the gun from the backpack?”

“What?!”

She sighed, “It is the only way we can get out of here. If we shoot the drones they can’t track us and it might scare them off.”

I was out of breath, “They are the National Guard! I don’t think they are going to be scared of a gun!”

She sighed again, “Fine. I will get it myself.”

She slowed down a bit and unzipped the bag grabbing the gun. She quickly aimed it and shot the drone perfectly. It crashed down behind us.

We heard the guards start to yell, “Put the gun down! Stop!”

Luna laughed and grabbed my hand again.

Another drone was upon us and Luna shot again but missed it.

Shots from the guards began ringing out.

Luna screamed and fell to the ground, dropping the gun.

I stopped too, “Luna.”

She was holding her leg, “Go! They hit my leg. Get out of here.”

I threw off the backpack, picking her up on my back instead, “I am not leaving you.”

She hesitantly wrapped her arms around me and we were running again, “I am just going to slow you down-”

I interrupted her, “Too bad.”

I was running slower now and they were gaining on us quickly.

I am not going to give up easily.

I looked ahead of us to see the guards made a blockade and them standing with their guns up.

How are we getting through this?

I looked down the alleyways we were passing, only to see more guards.

We are boxed in.

We got within one hundred feet of the blockade with nowhere to go. They all started yelling.

“Stop! Do not move!”

Luna still was gripping onto me as I stopped, “Luna, I don’t know what to do. We are stuck.”

She leaned into my ear and whispered, “Act dumb like everyone else. Don’t talk and just stare. We will be okay.”

All of a sudden Macy took off running towards the guards.

“Macy don’t.” I said under my breath.

She jumped sinking in her teeth into one of their arms. One of them hit her with their gun barrels causing her to let out a yelp and fall to the ground.

Macy. How dare you hurt her?

“Cage it!” He snarled. A guard picked her up and threw her into a cage and into a truck.

Luna jumped off my back and stood next to me, glaring at them. She had a look in her eye showing her anger, even I was scared.

They just made a huge mistake.

A guard yelled out, “Move in!”

They began marching towards us until they made a ten foot box around us. All with their guns up.

One of them moved forwards in an attempt to grab Luna. She let out a growl, scratching at their arms and kicking them, causing them to yell out in pain.

Damn. Don’t mess with her.

I growled too when they reached for me.

One of the impatient guards finally gave to order, “Take them and put them in the truck.”

Five of them moved in grabbing us, tying our hands and feet together. We both fought but they overpowered us.

They easily picked us up and walked over to a truck, throwing us in the back.

The one guard that has giving most of the orders stared at us, “Weird... Their eyes are really bright, along with their skin. They also seem to be acting the most human out of the others.”

He looked over at his men, “Make sure Dr. Simon knows about these two... Let’s get back to camp.”

“Yes sir.”

They closed the door up, locking us inside.

I looked over at Luna and she gave me a sad smile. She mouthed the words don’t worry to me but it just made me even more worried.

They know we are different.
