The Journal of Memories

Chapter Come back to me

I shook her, “Luna! Luna please say something!”

She stayed frozen and just gave me a blank stare.

She has been turned into them. Her brain is wiped... she doesn’t remember me.

Tears began to drip from my eyes. I yelled at the scientist outside, “What did you do to her!?”

Dr. Cory smiled while all the others looked to the ground with guilt. He had the nerve to speak to me, “We are terribly sorry... she didn’t react well to one of the tests-”

I cut him off, “Don’t you dare say you are sorry to me! You did this to her!! And you have the nerve to smile right now!”

I could tell my face was bright red and hot. I was practically fuming smoke out of my ears.

Dr. Cory dismissed the other scientists leaving just him and me. He stepped closer only to receive a terrifying growl from Macy. Her fur was sticking up and she had crouched down ready to pounce.

You go girl! I am glad we are on the same page.

He sighed, “Look. We did some tests and she agreed to them. It is not our fault that she came out this way.”

I gritted my teeth, “What. Was. The. Test?”

I saw his eye with a hint of fear but then he smirked, “It was a gas test.”

They exposed her to the gas again.

I am pissed now. I picked up the tray of food off the ground and threw it him. He was too quick and turned on the hologram, causing the food to hit it and fall to the ground.

I screamed out, “Leave us alone! Get out of my sight! You monster!”

My voice echoed through the whole hallway. It even filled Dr. Cory with enough fear that he quickly walked away with his head down like a puppy that just got scolded.

I turned my attention over to Luna, who was still standing, just staring at the wall.

I took some deep breaths claiming myself down, “Luna?”

She still didn’t move, “Luna. Please say something. Call me a weirdo, I don’t care... just give me one word.”

I reached, grabbing her hand and intertwining our fingers. Her eyes grew a bit wide then they went back to blank. Macy rubbed against her legs but nothing worked. I gently guided her to her bed and sat her down. Macy jumped up, laying at the foot.

What should I do? How do I deal with this?

I decided to go into the bathroom to try and clear my head. I let the sink run water until it was warm then splashed it on my face.

Just try to get her to remember you. Or at least something. Something happened when I grabbed her hand... I guess we should start there.

I made made way out of the bathroom and sat on my bed across from her, “Luna do you remember me?”

She was still staring at the wall like a statue.

“Luna can you remember anything?”

I thought for a moment looked at the coat I was wearing. I took it off and wrapping it around her, “Remember when we took settler in that house... You tried on that beautiful, sparkly black gown... those people had such a big house... and you said we should leave a thank you note then, laughed at me because I can’t read.”

I chuckled, remembering it. She glanced over at me but looked back at the wall.

We are making some progress.

“Remember when we stayed in that convenience store for the night and you keep throwing food at me... I learned that you liked salt and vinegar chips and Reese’s instead of Kit Kats... and you found that gun that I was absolutely scared of.”

She glanced towards me again a flash of brightness washed over her eyes but disappeared.

Come back to me Luna.

“Remember when I held you in your house while you cried... your tears soaked my shirt but I didn’t care... and when you bet me that I wouldn’t be able to resist your coffee... of course I lost.”

Her eyes flashed again but still dimmed.

I grabbed her hand, “Remember when I first saw you, behind that house... you were so happy to see me, to know that you weren’t the only one... Macy practically became your dog the first night... I thought she was a traitor... Then I wrapped your arms in gauze and you said you looked like a weird superhero,” I felt a tear fall from my eye, "My weird superhero.”

I let the tears fall from my eyes, “You made a promise not to quit on me.”

I don’t know what else to do.

I looked at her beautiful face and thought of an idea. I chuckled to myself.

She is going to kill me if this works.

I leaned in, touching our foreheads together then kissed her. It was short but it was still meaningful.

Her eyes widened as their bright green color began to swirl into the dark green. She let out a gasp like she just surfaced from being under water, “B-ben...”
