The Journal of Memories

Chapter A gun

I woke up before Luna, my eyes immediately caught sight of her wrapped in a blanket, her head at my feet. I sat up a bit against the counter, wrapping my blanket around me. Luna looked so peaceful with her eyes closed. She was taking long, big breaths, her chest slowly growing and shrinking with each time. The sun was shining on her pale skin making her look like a perfect, porcelain doll. Her blonde hair was glowing, looking almost golden in the light as is was spread across her face in various directions. It was starting to grow out more and more each day, along with my hair. I won’t be surprised if I had a full beard by the time we found my dad.

She began to move, her eyelids slowly opening.

“Good morning,” She mumbled.

I laughed as she opened her eyes a bit but flinched at the sunlight, “Morning.”

She attempted to open her eyes again, being more successful as they adjusted to the light. She rolled over seeing Macy laying against her, still sleeping, “Well someone is really lazy today.”

We both shared a laugh. She let out a yawn as she sat up looking around, “Do we still have clean clothes in the bag? I feel disgusting after sleeping on this floor.”

“Same. I would kill for a shower right now.”

I reached into the bag pulling out two pairs of pants and two shirts, “Looks like we have the perfect amount of clean clothes left. Do you want the skull and crossbones shirt or the wolf with a moon on it shirt?”

She looked at both of them as I held them up, “Of course they are both black. I will take to skull. Also, I found some baby wipes last night and the bathrooms are over there. It works good enough to get cleaned up.”

She grabbed the shirt and a pair of pants from the ground and stood up. She walked over to a shelf and threw a pack of baby wipes at me, then disappeared into one of the bathrooms across the store. I took that as my cue to gather some clothes too and disappear into the other bathroom.

I looked into the mirror seeing how my black hair was messy and sticking up in multiple directions. My skin seemed paler than normal causing my super bright, blue eyes to stick out.

Weird.

I took Luna’s advice and began wiping off with the wipes, not feeling as clean as a shower, but it got the dirt off.

Good enough.

I striped off my dirty clothes and threw on the clean ones. Before leaving, I shrugged on the black trench coat from the house we stayed at.

Hell yeah I was keeping this thing! It looks cool and is warm.

When I entered back into the store, Luna was scanning the aisles. She smiled at me holding up some food, “Cookies or brownies?”

She is so funny when it comes to food.

“Cookies sound pretty good to me.”

She gave a quick nod, meeting me at the counter, and broke open a tray of cookies.

Chocolate chip and peanut butter. She has good taste.

We heard a small whimper. We looked down at Macy who was just waking up and stretching.

That dog is really lazy.

Luna looked at the dirty bandage on Macy leg and the gauze on her arms, “We should change that and take these off.”

I chuckled, “I like the superhero cuffs though. What’s wrong with them? You don’t want to look like a weirdo anymore?”

She slapped me on the back of the head, “Shut up you.”

I laughed again, only causing her more anger.

She went over to the bag, taking out the first-aid kit. Sitting on the ground next to Macy, she cut the gauze off her arms, revealing her almost healed scratches, and unwrapped Macy’s leg. She took the scissors cutting the end of the stitching and pulling it out of Macy’s wound, “It doesn’t look like she needs this anymore. It is almost healed.”

She put more antiseptic on the cut and re-wrapped her leg up. Satisfied, she put the kit back into the bag. She was about to stand up but her eyes grew dim then wide, “Woah!”

I followed her gaze under the counter seeing a black object, “What is that?”

She reached up, un-sticking it from the counter, “It’s a gun.”

A gun?

Shock.

Holy shit, it’s a gun!

She held it in her hands but then gritted her teeth closing her eyes.

“Luna, what’s wrong?”

She then opened her eyes and I watched blood drip from her nose.

She wiped if off with the back of her hand, “It’s okay... I was just remembering when I used to go shooting.”

I almost choked on my own spit, “You? Guns?”

She laughed, “I know right!”

She looked at it again and dropped the magazine out, “Well it is fully loaded.”

Snapping it back in she put the gun in the front pocket of the backpack. My eyes grew wide, “What are you doing?!”

She looked at me, “Don’t worry the safety is on and who knows we might need it if that mob ever comes back...”

I stopped her, “We are not going to kill anyone!”

She sighed, “We aren’t! But we can still scare them away. Also I don’t want to leave it here, what if one of them find it? People will definitely die then.”

She had a point. After all, she probably knows what she’s talking about more than me.

I still don’t like the idea of a gun.

I gave up, “Okay... but we only use for drastic emergencies.”

“Exactly.”

We both packed up our things and walked out to the bike. I sat in front and she looked at me, “What? You don’t trust me anymore?”

I laughed loudly, “A bit. I am sorry but I am a better driver than you.”

She jumped on, “True.”

We were off again on our journey.

About twenty minutes later, Luna tapped on my shoulder, “Can we stop?”

I began to slow down, “Sure. Why?”

She looked confused and jumped off the bike, staring at a house in front of us, “I am not sure. Something doesn’t feel right... and I feel like I know this place.”

That’s weird.
