The Inauguration

Chapter 20

She hears a growl echo within the shadows of the trees that surround her. She scans her surroundings, now forgetting all the heartache she had just felt a minute ago, now focusing on the beating of her heart and the sound of the wind hiding the scent of the strangers.

A moment too long passes for her before she feels the shift of the wind on the back of her neck and she turns quickly to see the wolf jump at her, she rolls under it but its back paw scratches against her arm.

She flinched assessing her arm before paying attention to the brown wolf now growling before her. She looks around knowing there were more still hiding but now all she could do was focus on the one in front of her.

It snarled at her and she snarled back finally feeling the pain in her arm go away, knowing that the wound had healed. It springs in attack and she jumps punching it in the face and watching as it falls to the ground. Hearing it whimper she gives it no chance to get up and she kicks it in the stomach, before kicking it in the face to knock it out.

She stares at it, knowing that was way too easy and she was right as the rest of its comrades come out of the shadows, all flanking her sides.

She now stands in the centre of the field, standing next to an unconscious wolf, counting and calculating her chances of getting away.

She knew they weren’t rogues, they didn’t smell like rouges but she also didn’t know from which pack they were from. Their scent smelt off, mixed with smoke and mint. She recognized the familiar smell of the mint but the smoke clouded her judgment.

But she didn’t have time to ponder on the scent as the two wolves to her right jumped at her, one going her for head and the other for her side. She turned and ran to the left, facing two black wolves that snarled at her, she ran towards them but just when she to get into contact with them, she jumped and back flipped over the two wolves that had been changing her from the right.

She stood on her feet and ran through the opening the wolves had made, knowing very well she couldn’t have taken all six wolves at once. She ran, hearing their paw prints hitting the ground as they ran after her. She could feel the ground of her pack filling her with energy the more she ran back to the centre of it.

She broke through the tree-line and was faced with her pack members fighting off the attackers. She caught Kevin’s blond fur fighting off three wolves, two of them on his back and the other in front of him. She ran towards him jumping onto one of the wolves on his back and tearing it of him. She did the same with the other and heard Kevin fight off the one that was in front of him.

With the three attackers down, he turned to her thanking her through the link before charging off to help others. She saw the six wolves that had attacked her break through the tree line and she growled at them.

The first brown one came running at her and she waited patiently for him to attack, when he was finally close enough, she jumped just high enough to land on his back and wrapping her arms around his neck. He thrashed around for a bit but she tightened her grip around her neck, then hearing a click and she let go, letting his wolf form hit the floor.

She was suddenly thrown to the side, her body skidding across the ground floor. She groaned in her pain, her eyes opening just in time to see the wolf jumping at her and she rolled away under its feet to the side. She stood up quickly, kicking the wolf on its side, then punching a final blow to his head.

She huffed, as she turned around to face the last remaining four wolves, they growled at her menacingly but she stood her ground. She felt fatigue wash over her but she stayed standing.

Two wolves came running towards her and she felt panicked, she didn’t know how she was going to get out of this one but she would try. She ducked the paw that came at her, before gripping it and pulling the beast towards her to block her from the wolf that pounced afterwards. The two wolves whimpered a the bump, but they stood up again, now flanking both her sides.

She saw them run towards her and she knew she had to do end this soon, so she waited for the right moment, and just as they were both about to meet her, she jumped over them. They butted heads and she grasped the females tail, pulling at it dragging her and throwing her at the two wolves that pounced.

She puffs tired but the air is knocked out of her as she’s hit from the side, the wolf tearing at her side and she put out her arms as a defence when the wolf tries attacker her face but she screams as her skin is torn off.

The pain intensifies as the wolf hits her side and she yells out in pain. The wolf is suddenly thrown off her and she scratches up into a ball of pain. She feels hands turning her onto her back. She hears someone calling out her name but all she could hear were sirens and ringing mixed in with the words.

“La….ni…..st…..wake….up,” she feels the warmth of arms that are familiar to her and she lets herself succumb to that warmth, leaving the echo in the back of her mind that has now just become a mere whisper.

“Please”.
