Chapter 18~Katrina and Peter
~Third Person POV~
“WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?” Mateo screamed as walked into the room just as Peter caught Phoenix. Peter rolled his eyes and gently dropped Phoenix on the couch that was in the room.“I don’t know. One minute we were talking and then she just collapsed.” Peter said keeping his eyes on Phoenix. Mateo opened his mouth to respond but closed it as he watched Peter curiously. Peter hesitated as he reached for Phoenix’s face before brushing her hair out of her face. He could feel Mateo’s gaze on him but he ignored him as he lost himself in his thoughts. Phoenix suddenly whimpered and a tear started to slowly run down her cheek. Peter’s heart clenched in response and before he could stop himself he wiped the tear from her cheek and gently kissed the top of her head. He started to pull back when her arms wrapped around him and pulled him back into her. Mateo studied Phoenix-taking in her closed eyes and relaxed state and let himself relax before leaving her in the room with Peter. Peter pulled back a little so he could look at her face. He lost himself in his thoughts once again as he took in everything about her. She was still so breathtakingly beautiful even with her eyes closed and he frowned realizing that was something Maleficent had said once.
“Why are you frowning?” Phoenix asked snapping Peter out of his thoughts. He let his face turn stoic and shook his head before pulling away from her hold. Phoenix watched silently as his walls flew back up and he moved towards the end of the couch. She slowly pulled herself into a sitting position so she was facing him and hugged her knees to her chest. Both of them stayed silent as Peter avoided her gaze and she lost herself in her thoughts.
“You watched her-me die.” She whispered breaking the silence. Peter tensed and the room seemed to have dropped in temperature as he slowly turned to face her with a dark look. He opened his mouth to cut into her but immediately swallowed the insult down as he watched her eyes fill with tears.
“I’m sorry.” She sobbed burying her face in her knees. Peter stared at her wide-eyed as he tried to figure out if she was serious. He grumbled a string of profanities under his breath as he felt his cold demeanor crumbling and he slid besides Phoenix before pulling her into him.
“You’re literally the only person I know that would apologize for something they can’t control.” He teased. She hiccuped a giggled and he smiled at the sound as he rubbed soothing circles on her back.
“I shouldn’t have asked you to stay with me.” She whispered as the memories began to play in her head again.
“Peter please.” I whispered reaching my arm out for him. He jerked away from me and shook his head as he took a step out of my reach. I bit back a sob as my eyes filled with tears and I looked down at the ground to hide my tears from him.
“What do you mean?” He croaked.
“Peter I’m going to die.” I whispered as a tear escaped past my eyes and freely rolled down my cheek.
“Is this supposed to be some kind of a joke?” He spat. I looked up at him and he shook his head in denial as he finally took me in. My skin had become a ghastly white in the past couple of weeks and my lips a pale blue. I watched as he took in the bags under my eyes before turning his attention to my cheeks. My cheeks lost their usual plumpness and you could see my veins if you looked long enough. I heard his breathing quicken as he took my face in one last time before looking at his giant sweater I was wearing. He took a step towards me and gently pulled the sweater off of my head. I’d become ridiculously skinny in the last two weeks having lost all the weight on my body from lack of eating, sleeping, and drinking. His eyes filled with unshed tears as he slowly brought his eyes back up to mine.
“There’s a way to save you right?” He asked desperately. I looked down at my bare feet for a second before slowly bringing my eyes up to his. He shook his head in denial again and took a step back as his tears started to roll freely down his cheeks.
“I-I don’t understand how did this happen?” He asked softly.
“I was fighting a witch two weeks ago and she put a curse on me-the moon goddess can’t even lift it.” I answered softly.
“Two-two weeks ago. YOU’VE KEPT YOUR IMPENDING DEATH AWAY FROM ME THIS WHOLE TIME?” He screamed making me jump.
“I couldn’t bring myself to tell you.” I whispered as my tears started rolling freely down my cheeks. He opened his mouth to say something but closed it suddenly and turned to leave.
“Peter please.” I begged following after him. He ignored me as he picked up his pace.
“Peter I love you.” I said making him stop. He turned around to face me but didn’t say anything.
“I couldn’t tell you because I was afraid you’d leave me and I love you too much to let you go.” I said softly. He scoffed and shook his head.
“I wouldn’t have left you, Kat. I love you.” He croaked shrugging. I bit my lip hard to keep myself from sobbing and looked at the ground.
“Leave it to us to confess our love for each other when one of us is dying.” I joked. He didn’t respond but I could see his feet coming into my line of sight. He stopped directly in front of me and picked my head up to look at him.
“But as much as I love you I can’t watch you die, Kat.” He whispered looking between my eyes. I stayed silent as I looked in his eyes for a slipt second before stepping away from him. Regret flashed his features but it was gone as quickly as it came.
“Well, you know where the front door is.” I said cooly.
“Kat.” He said taking a step towards me.
“Fuck you, Peter.” I spat before going back into my bedroom and slamming the door shut. I heard the front door slam shut and I closed my eyes tightly before sinking to the floor. I held my face in my hands as a sob ripped through my lips. A knock on the door caught my attention but I ignored it hoping whoever was on the other side would get the message. The knocking stopped and I sighed in relief before turning my attention back to my tears.
“What’s the matter?” A voice asked softly. I didn’t have to look up to know who it was.
“He left me.” I whispered after a moment of silence. The person sat down beside me and wrapped her arm around my shoulder.
“Well, then he’s a dick.” She said softly.
“He should change his name to Peter Pan the dick eater.” She continued making me laugh. I looked up at her and smiled as best as I could. She smiled back at me but I could see the sadness in her eyes as she slowly looked me over.
“I’m going to miss you.” She said looking in my eyes.
“I’m going to miss you too.” I admitted softly. We stared at each other for a while as we tried to mesmerize everything about each other. Her eyes filled with tears but she quickly blinked them away before standing up and pulling me up with her.
“What do you wanna do?” She asked smiling at me. I smiled back and shrugged.
“Whatever you want to do.” I said ignoring the sudden feeling that washed over me. Her eyes brightened in excitement and she pulled me away from the door before pulling the door open. She looped her arm with mine before pulling me after her. Her lips started moving rapidly like she was saying something she was extremely excited about. I opened my mouth to tell her I had no idea what she was saying when I was surrounded by darkness and I felt myself begin to fall.
“Why the hell won’t she wake up? It’s been 24 hours.” A voice growled. I moaned as a pain shot through my body and shut my eyes tightly as I tried to get it to go away.
“Hey, hey baby it’s me your okay.” The voice whispered suddenly next to me. I felt a hand touch my forehead and I relaxed a little before slowly opening my eyes to see Peter standing over me.
“Peter.” I croaked as tears filled my eyes.
“Shh.” He whispered playing with my hair. I whimpered as the pain shot through my body again and Peter shut his eyes tightly as if he was in pain. He continued to run his fingers through my hair and slowly opened his eyes to meet mine.
“I need to run some tests.” A new voice said from behind him. Peter stepped to the side but didn’t completely leave my side. A man in a lab coat stepped forward and gave me a small smile before pressing a button on the side of the bed and tilting it upwards.
“Are you in pain?” He asked looking down at a clipboard in his hands.
“Yes.” I whimpered looking back at Peter. He continued asking me questions which I tried my best to answer before he left the room.
“I’ll be right back, okay?” Peter said softly. My eyes filled with tears and my grip on his arm tightened as I silently begged for him to stay with me. He gently kissed the top of my head before losing my grip on his hand and leaving the room. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back as I tried to swallow back my tears.
“You scared me. I thought you were okay. I mean one minute we’re walking and the next you’re collapsing and not waking up.” A voice said walking into the room.
“Sorry.” I said sheepishly as I opened my eyes to look at the newest person in the room. She smiled at me and shook her head before walking up to me and wrapping her arms around me in a hug.
“Peter almost lost his shit when I called to tell him you were here.” She said giggling as she climbed into the bed beside me. I smiled weakly rested my head on her shoulder.
“The moon goddess is still making her preparations for you.” She said breaking the silence.
“I told her not to.” I groaned.
“Why? You’re getting a restart.” She said softly.
“Where I won’t recognize any of you and you won’t recognize me-it isn’t fair.” I said taking a deep breath.
“I know it isn’t but you know you have to do this. It’s your destiny.” She said brushing my hair out of my face as tears started to run freely down my cheeks.
“Yeah, I know.” I mumbled half-heartedly.
“You know she can’t be seen here but she still keeps apologizing for not being here.” She said breaking the silence again.
“It’s fine.” I mumbled.
“Promise me something?” I asked softly.
“Anything.” She said immediately.
“Take care of Peter.” I pleaded, looking up at her.
“I promise.” She said locking her green eyes with my blue ones.
“Take care of yourself too. You need to be queen.” I said seriously. She smiled brightly and nodded her head. She shut them as they filled with tears and hugged me again.
“I love you, Katrina.” She whispered.
“I love you too-Maleficent.” I said softly. The door opened and we pulled away to see Peter. Mal smiled as she looked between the two of us before kissing my cheek and leaving the room. Peter smiled at me but I could see the pain in his eyes.
“What did the doctor say?” I asked already knowing why he left.
“Nothing we don’t already know.” He said giving me a weak smile.
“Then why did you punch the wall?” I asked looking down at his bloody fist. It was obvious he tried to clean it to hide it but he failed miserably. He chuckled before laying the bed back down and climbing in beside me.
“He doesn’t know how long you have left to live.” He whispered as I rested my head on his chest. My eyes filled with tears and I slowly nodded my head in understanding. I closed my eyes as I listened to Peter’s heartbeat. I shot up as I suddenly got hit with nausea and leaned over the bed as I threw up. Peter took my hair in his hands as he held it out of my face and softly rubbed my back. I began sobbing heavily as I looked down at the blood I just threw up. The doctor ran in the room with Maleficent close behind him and stared at me wide-eyed just as I began throwing up blood again.
“I think it’s time to go.” The doctor said sadly.
“What are you talking about?” Maleficent asked staring at me worriedly.
“He means I’m about to die.” I said in between a sob. Maleficent looked at the doctor waiting for him to confirm but the pained look on his face said it all.
“I’m not leaving her.” Maleficent said walking past the doctor. He opened his mouth to argue and she sent him a glare making him shut it. He looked at Peter who was watching me warily.
“Don’t leave me.” I pleaded, reaching for his hand. He nodded his head and gently kissed the top of my head. He hugged me into him and Maleficent climbed in before wrapping her arms around me from behind.
“I love you guys.” I whispered as my eyelids started dropping heavily. I waited for a response but I was suddenly surrounded by darkness.
