The Heir to the Alpha

Chapter 9

Scarlett

And when the tip of my fingers reached my nostrils I couldn't believe it...

It smelled so much like the Alpha, almost as much as himself, the Alpha Christopher was the father of the life I was generating, but then came the doubt.

Would he want that?

Didn't he just want sex? And now I appeared pregnant.

Insecurity took over me, and as if on cue Christopher called me, I just refused the call. I was too shocked to cry.

And Christopher would come to the Pack the next day, I just didn't know what to do.

I quickly left the bathroom and locked myself in my room, I just wanted to cry and pretend that none of this had happened. But two knocks on the door made me jump on the bed.

"Scarlett, daughter, may I come in?" The voice was my mother's, I knew I didn't want to see anyone, but any excuse would only make her more worried, and deep down I needed a mother's lap.

"Come in, Mom." I said and she slowly opened the door, walked over, and sat on my bed.

"Daughter, I felt bad for not having talked to you yet about what happened with Mathew. I got so involved with work, the days went by and you seemed to always be on duty." My mother told me, patting her lap twice to ask me to lay my head down, and that was all I needed, I laid my head on her lap and she started to run her hand lightly through my hair.

"It's not your fault, Mom, in fact, I was always on duty, I buried myself in work so I didn't have to think," I confessed.

"Is there something you need to tell me?" She asked me and I froze, lifting my head to look at her.

"Did Karen tell you?" I asked distressed.

"No, but I know it's not just that, Scarlett." My mother told me without pressuring me, just saying that she knew.

I gave up keeping secrets.

"I don't want Dad to know." I pleaded and she just nodded. "The night I went to meet Mathew at Tyler's I found out he was lying to me and I saw him cheating on me, I just fell on the dance floor and someone picked me up…" I started to tell her but turned to meet her gaze. "And that someone was the Alpha." My mother's eyes widened, she really had no idea, but she tried to hide her reaction. "He was absurdly kind, he listened to me, he looked after me and we ended up together that night, that's it." I finished the story there, but she didn't seem satisfied, I felt my mother nervous, but she took a breath to say.

"You know I'm a gynecologist, don't you?" She told me slowly.

There I froze, I felt a cold of fear go up my spine, how will my mother react to this?

But she just kept talking.

"I smell pregnant women from miles away, I went to put your clothes to wash and I was scared by the scent Scarlett, I thought it was your sister's, but the panties were yours…" She started to speak and only then did I understand that she had already knew I was pregnant before I knew myself. "I thought it was Mathew's, and you guys not being together anymore could be a problem, but now you slept with the Alpha?"

I know she didn't ask badly, but she scared me and I could only cry.

"Yes, I just took the pregnancy test, and it's Alpha's, from the smell I'm sure it's his, but mom, what am I going to do?"

She didn't say anything, she just continued running her hand through my hair.

“Now I think you tell him, and if he doesn't want to, we'll raise this child as a family. You know I always wanted to be a grandmother…” She simply said that she would be by my side, whatever the scenario and that enlightened me, I couldn’t believe it, I just hugged her tight.

“Thanks, Mom, but don’t tell anyone, please. I need to tell Christoper first.” I said sitting on the bed.

“Christopher?” She said laughing, I was calling the Alpha by his first name. But then she just hugged me.

I spent the night crying, I didn't know exactly how to feel, the next day I woke up to a message from Christopher, even though I had been ignoring him for days, he just kept sending it.

I'll be back today at noon, I want to see you.

My heart froze, and I just ignored it, like the other messages.

I stayed at home until lunch, ate, and went straight to the clinic, it was late at the hospital and Karen would be there too, I was avoiding her so I wouldn't have to bring up the subject, and even though my smell was weak, in a few days it would be easy to identify from distance, I only had a few days to tell everyone, just thinking about it made me want to despair, as I was already doing, I continued to sink into work. But in the middle of the afternoon I went to the reception to take a medical record, I found Karen and my mother leaving an office too and to our surprise my father came in, and suddenly the reception looked like our dining room.

“Lots of Byron’s together.” Bertha said and laughed along with Amanda, the receptionist.

“Honey, what brings you here?” My mother asked confused

“Actually, Alpha made a summons, to Scarlett for an urgent meeting, I came to inform her.” I saw my mother and sister's eyes widen, but my father kept talking. “I don’t understand, why?”

My mother and sister opened their eyes even wider and looked at me, and I felt my cheeks blush.

“Scarlett attended to the Alpha these days, didn’t she? It must have something to do with that.” Bertha said pulling some charts off the shelf.

“Of course, that must be it.” My mother said.

“But why a summons? Doesn’t he have your number?” Karen asked me softly, frowning.

“He does, but I’m not answering him.” I said even more quietly so only Karen could hear. “But I can’t go, Dad, I have a clinic all afternoon.” I said it out loud now as I went back to signing the latest evolution, placing the chart on the counter.

“Scarlett, it’s a summons, you have no choice. Karen takes her place, let’s go!” My father said, raising his voice, and it really irritated me that the Alpha was forcing me to talk to him.

“You better go, honey, we can manage here.” My mother said, smiling sweetly, and in fact, she was right, I needed to tell her this soon, waiting would only make things even worse.

"Okay, let's go." I responded by taking off my lab coat and handing it to my mother.

"Everything will be fine." She told me softly after giving me a kiss on the cheek.

I drove with my father to Pack’s house and prayed that he wouldn't smell it when he was so close to me, but the hospital smell helped cover it up a bit. I went silently, creating in my head all the possible scenarios and what would be the best way to tell them.

Arriving at Pack’s house, the front entrance was very different from the one I used that day, it was a huge building with 4 floors made of mirrored glass, the first 3 were business, and the entire administrative and legal part of Pack functioned there, in addition to of a huge kitchen and dining room and the Alpha’s office, of course. On the top floor I always knew it was his “house”, I don't know if there were any other rooms, but that day I saw that there were other doors and I only knew the bedroom.

I entered with my father, and everyone greeted him, while they gave me confused looks and I was afraid that someone already knew something. We went up to the third floor and at the end of a long corridor there was a double wooden door, carved, it looked a lot like the door to his room, my father stopped just a few steps away from entering.

“I need to resolve some matters, let me know anything, daughter.” My father told me, giving me a kiss on the top of my head and leaving through a door on the left.

Now I had no escape, I just had to go in, I gathered all my strength and opened one of the doors, with one foot in front of the other I entered. The room was huge, as big as Christopher's room, but it still had a mezzanine, there were some sofa sets, the walls were adorned with ancient weapons and swords, as well as books and more books. In the center there was a low table and at the back a large carved wooden office table and a huge chair, on which he was sitting with his eyes fixed on some documents. And he was more handsome than ever, he was wearing a dark blue shirt and his eyes looked up to meet mine as soon as I entered, I took a few steps but kept my distance, I stood in the center of the office and he started talking.

“You haven't answered me for three days, I even called your father to see if everything was okay. I thought it was a problem with your cell phone or that you were working too much. But if I didn't know you, I'd say you're avoiding me, Scarlett…” He had so much intention in every word he said that I felt them reverberate inside me, he had pain and concern. “Because if you don’t want anything to do with me, just say so, but I had to use a meeting call to get you here.” He gave a half smile, but it wasn't one of happiness, it was as if he was trying to hide his real feeling.

“You’re right, I was really avoiding you,” I said confessing, and only then was I able to look at Christopher, his gaze held me and now his eyes widened, and he opened his lips to say something, but gave up.

I left the Alpha speechless.

“You didn’t go back to that asshole, did you? Scarlett, he's an idiot, you promised me, you deserve more than that…” He began to speak, taking a few steps towards me.

“No, it doesn't have to do with Mathew, I was afraid it was his, but then I found out it wasn't and…” I started to speak, turning around, it was so difficult to speak looking directly at him.

“Scarlett, what are you talking about?” I had my back to him, I couldn't see the expression on his face, but his voice was full of concern.

I took a deep breath and started to speak.

“I started to feel sick about three days ago, and I got suspicious, but I wasn't sure, even so I couldn't talk to you anymore, I was afraid of your reaction, I was even afraid that it was Mathew's, but is yours and…” I couldn't finish speaking, Christopher grabbed me by the shoulders and spun me around, forcing me to face him, the expression on his face was one of complete astonishment, and that scared me a lot.

“Scarlett, what are you talking about?” It seemed like the whole world stopped, I got lost in his gaze, but I was afraid, terrified, in fact, of the reaction Christopher might have.

“If you don't want to take over, I'll raise it myself, you don't have to worry about me…” I started to justify, but that only made his eyes widen more.

“Scarlett, you're not saying you're…” He started to say but his voice caught in his throat.

“Pregnant, yes Alpha, I am pregnant,” I said and at that moment the expression that I thought was astonishment intensified, he looked completely incredulous.

"You can not be serious? Isn’t this a joke?” He said and the phrase scared me.
