Chapter 3
Scarlett
"If I had known you would be home today, I wouldn't have changed the shift." My sister said drinking her coffee and laughing.
"Weren't you going to spend the day with your mate?" My father now asked arching an eyebrow.
"He has work commitments today," I responded by shrugging and grabbing a cup of coffee.
"But isn't he Conson, Mathew Conson, from legal?" My father asked back.
"Yes, that's him!" I replied now intrigued.
"Legal doesn't work today..." He said and I felt my stomach twist, Mathew wouldn't lie to me "But it must be something extra, don't worry daughter," My father said kissing the top of my head. "But I need to go, I'll see you tonight?" He asked all of us.
"I'll be on duty tonight, but I'll see you at the breakfast tomorrow." I replied smiling and he walked out the door.
"We're leaving, take the opportunity to sleep, since you must have spent the night awake. To take over my night shift." My sister said laughing, poking me with her elbow.
"Karen, leave your sister." My mother responded by collecting the cups from the table. "Scarlet, I'll see you at night at shift change, is that okay?"
I just nodded yes, and they both left for work too, I finished my coffee, washed the dishes and spent the rest of the day watching TV, trying to relax. I had lunch, and my hand itched a few times to send a message to Mathew, I was starting to miss him, I didn't know how to react.
Wasn't it now, newly mated couples, that couples couldn't keep their hands off each other?
It was all new to me.
I went to take a shower, but first I sent a message: Hi, Scarlet here, to Mathew, and when I got out of the shower, no response. I changed and drove to the hospital, and he didn't respond, I started the shift and my cell phone vibrated, my heart jumped out of my chest, but it was a message from the operator.
Nothing from him.
I was filled with frustration, but he should still be working, the emergency room was closed, and my cell phone vibrated again, my heart skipped a beat, but it was Bertha, an older nurse at the hospital, who sent me:
Silver burning, room 03.
Okay, going.
I sent it, and went to room 03, hoping to only have Bertha in there, I went in asking.
"Who was it this time? Some other stupid, careless guard who got burned in training? It wasn't Thomas, was it? I need to make fun of him if it was." I asked, turning to the counter, putting on my gloves, waiting for the patient to enter, but there was a person inside, and it was definitely not Bertha.
"I'm not a guard, nor an idiot, but carelessness you got it right, I really was." The thick and strong voice reverberated inside the room and inside my chest, I felt like I was going to explode, it took a millisecond for me to recognize the voice, and I quickly turned around.
It was the Alpha.
It was the fucking Alpha.
When I turned around I found him holding his left fist, his blue eyes lifted to meet mine, and I felt my breath catch in my throat, my legs went limp and I didn't even know how to react.
"I'm sorry Alpha, I didn't know, I..." I started to say, but I started to stutter and my last words came out as babbling.
"It's okay, just..." He let out a groan, he was in pain. "Just please get me the treatment soon." He said and I widened my eyes looking at him, something in that blue immensity attracted me, but I couldn't quite identify what it was.
"Of course." I shook my head, turned off my emotions, and turned on my rational, and practical mode. I turned around and grabbed the ointment for immediate relief and already got the serum to start the treatment.
I turned to him and looked into his blue eyes once again.
"Let me see." I asked, touching lightly the hand that held the fist and he relaxed at my touch, slowly moving his palm away and revealing a deep cut, and because it was silver it simply wouldn't stop bleeding, he was wearing completely black clothing, which disguised the fact. that he was probably covered in blood. I quickly opened the ointment and applied a generous layer, took some gauze and placed it on top, squeezing it carefully.
He groaned.
"I'm sorry, but it'll be over, just a few more seconds." I said, looking at the wound, and I saw the ointment taking effect, his face gradually relaxed and the bleeding reduced, I put more ointment and bandaged it, carefully. But having him there so close, his smell invaded my nose, and I had no idea that something could smell so good, it was a mix of cinnamon and coffee, but at the same time it was woody, it was intense, and it was good.
"The ointment takes away the pain, and in this case it will stop the bleeding, I'll leave it in the bandage until the anti-silver serum is applied, and by then the healing should be finished." I said finishing the bandage and looking at him again.
"Thanks." It was short, simple and sincere.
"But I need to get a IV on your arm." I said gesturing to the black shirt he was wearing.
The Alpha just nodded and began to unbutton his shirt, and with every inch of skin he revealed, I regretted asking him that.
He was sculpted, I could imagine that he was strong as an Alpha, the clothes marked his muscles, but nothing compared to seeing them like this, uncovered, it was as if it was impossible not to look. And in addition, he was covered with silver scars, wolves don't have scars, unless they were between life and death, or were made with silver.
My mouth went dry, I swallowed hard, and I just couldn't hide it. Where is my professionalism anyway? He sat down, and I grabbed the tourniquet to gain access and start the IV.
"Who is Thomas?" His question was simple and direct and my eyes widened at the question.
"He's my brother-in-law, my sister's mate, he's a guard and he's been burned a few times." I said, trying to make his venipuncture as delicate as possible, I put the serum in and it was visible that the Alpha was relaxing more and more every second, until he let out a loud sigh.
"It happened?" I asked, raising my gaze to his, and for a few seconds he just stared at me, as if he was trying to read my soul, as if he found some answer in my gaze, the air became thin, it was as if it were difficult to breathe, and I swear I saw his gaze drop to my lips for a moment, then he blinked hard and swallowed.
"Yes, it's much better." The Alpha responded, releasing air from his lungs.
I leaned against the counter in front, being close to him seemed too intense.
"How did you Sir get that cut, it was ugly and..." I asked and regretted it as soon as I opened my mouth.
"Sir no, I feel old like this." He said smiling, and damn, it was the most beautiful smile I had ever seen, I had never seen the Alpha smile, and he was smiling, there, at me. "I train with the guards every day, today it was with silver weapons, I got a little carried away, and in fact a guard next to me was injured and I went to help, but whoever was fighting with me didn't understand that I had already stopped and... " He just shrugged.
"I would change this training immediately, an Alpha cannot take the risk of getting injured like that, if it went deeper it could lead to death or amputation of your hand." I responded, furrowing my eyebrows in concern, and only later did I realize it came out as an order.
I was used to making recommendations to patients, never to a superior, and everything I said seemed almost disrespectful.
"Are you trying to order me how I should conduct my training?" His face fell and the cold Alpha took place, I felt my heart tighten and a chill ran down my spine.
What the fuck was I doing?
"I didn't mean to, I didn't..." I tried to apologize, I tried to take back what I said, but he just laughed.
Did he laugh?
"You needed to see your face..." He said, holding his stomach with his free hand, he laughed so much, and it was a good laugh, the kind you could spend days listening to.
"That was…." I would complete cruel, but he was faster,
"Funny." He said, still laughing, and his sky blue eyes narrowed when he laughed, I didn't imagine he could get even more beautiful.
"Was." I had to admit it.
I approached him again, still laughing, and bent down in front of him to remove the band that I had placed on his arm, I heard him grunting, but I don't know exactly what that meant, I removed the bands gently and heard a sigh of relief when I removed all the dressing. The deep cut from before was now just a small pink mark.
"There will probably be some scarring, as it is silver, but once the serum is finished, you will be released." I said, running my finger lightly over his wound, and I could have sworn I saw his body hair stand up at that. "I think it's another one for the collection." I said and my eyes automatically went to his bare chest, stamped with several scars, he followed my gaze to his own body and then looked back at me, I completely lost my breath, I forgot how to breathe while his eyes looked at me.
"Scarlet? Daughter?" The voice was familiar, and it was my mother's.
"Here, mom." I said towards the door.
She walked in suddenly, and I saw her eyes widen when she saw the Alpha.
"Alpha." She said exclaiming. "I'm sorry, I just heard you were here now, otherwise I would have done the dressing myself." My mother said, analyzing the now small scar on his wrist, and putting her hand on the serum to check if it was running out.
"I was treated very well by…Scarlet." He said my name slowly, since until then he didn't know what my name was. "Daughter?" He finished by raising just one of his eyebrows.
"Martha, is he there?" The voice now belonged to my father who entered without warning.
"Yes dear, Scarlett did the treatment." My mother said as soon as my father entered the room that it was now too small.
"I hope my daughter did a good job."
For a moment, Alpha Christopher stared at the three of us, probably trying to assimilate the information.
"She did." He responded now by resting his gaze on me, as if he were analyzing me, and studying every inch of me.
But I cut off eye contact and went to the serum that I realized had run out, and without saying anything else I just removed the needle from the Alpha's arm and applied a plaster.
"The treatment has been completed and the wound has already healed, if you feel pain again you can come to the emergency room and we can apply another serum, although I would recommend avoiding this training with silver weapons, I don't want to have to amputate you," I said with the greatest sincerity in the world and Alpha Christopher looked at me, raising one of his eyebrows.
"Scarlett." My parents warned me in chorus.
"Okay, she's actually right." Alpha said with a sideways smile at me.
"I need to go." I said to the whole room, and then I turned to my parents. "See you guys at home in the morning." I said with a smile and left, but I could see the Alpha's hoarse voice asking in the background.
"She's your daughter then…"
I only heard it in the background, but soon I was distracted by a child who was crying with an earache, and I got involved with my patients.
I worked exhaustively all night, and all morning.
I was supposed to leave early in the morning, but there was almost a jam in the emergency room with teenagers suffering from food poisoning, and I extended my hours until the last one was seen, when my shift ended it was almost noon, I just wanted to eat, take a shower and bed.
But to my surprise, my cell phone started ringing while I was walking to my car.
It was Mathew.
