Chapter 2
After a long 4 hours, Angie finally made it back home where she stepped inside her house to see her parents waiting for her at the dinner table.
“Hi honey” her mother greeted with a smile “How was work?”
“Exhausting” she breathed while slumping onto her chair.
“At least you made some money” her father reminded, “And don’t worry, you’ve got until August and then you can quit.”
She sighed as she began to eat her pasta, only to stop when she remembered Jackson’s offering today.
“Oh wait-” she spoke with her mouthful as she swallowed her food “I got some news. Jackson Monroe came to see me today at work.”
“He did?” her father remarked, “What for?”
“Well um-” she mumbled, “This is going to sound crazy, but he asked me if I would like to join him and his father on an expedition to some island near South America to look for a new species of some mammal.”
“Whoa seriously?” her mother gasped.
“Yeah” she gave a slight laugh “It’s so random.”
“Well, what did you tell him?”
“I told him that I needed to think about it.”
“Yeah, you go ahead and do that” her father allowed “And let us know everything too.”
So after dinner, Angie went up into her room where she pulled out her cell and began to call Jackson. Like always, she began to feel butterflies in her stomach as she waited for him to pick up.
“Hey Angie” he picked up.
“Hey Jackson” she greeted “So um, about your offer, I need to know more about it. Like when it is, how long will we be gone, what else will we be doing? You know?”
“Oh sure. We’ll leave next Saturday in my private jet, we should be gone for about a week, and we’re just gonna be looking for this new species while exploring the place.”
“That does sound fun” she admitted.
“It will be. And guess what, my dad said that if we do find this new species, then he’ll get paid lots of money, and he decided that he’ll give haft the money to you to help pay for your college.”
At that moment, she felt her stomach flop, but with a good feeling.
“Are you for real?” she gasped.
“He wasn’t kidding” he chuckled “He knows how much you’ve been struggling to make money, so he decided he wants to help you, that is, of course, we find the new species.”
Angie couldn’t believe what she was hearing. If she was offered haft the money his father would make, she wouldn’t have to work at the cafe anymore.
“I- I can’t believe this,” she remarked.
“Do you still need more time to think?”
“Oh um-” she began to think hard, and after a moment, she came to her conclusion.
“You there?”
“Yeah I’m still here” she replied “And I think I have my answer. I’ll do it.”
“Really?” she heard him smile.
“Although can my friends Tammy and Eli come?”
“Sure, they’re cool.”
“Awesome” she beamed “I’ll let them know.”
“Alright then, and I’ll let my dad know. I’ll call you later to tell you about time and stuff.”
“Okay, bye.”
After hanging up, Angie let out a small squeal while plopping down on her bed. Not knowing will she be going on an adventure, but it will be with her friends, her crush, and his father who she admired so much.
The next day, Angie met up with her friends at a mall where they discussed the trip.
“So we’re really going?” Tammy gasped as they walked past the stores while she held hands with Eli.
“Yep,” Angie smiled “We’ll be leaving next Saturday at around 8, and we’ll be flying in his private jet.”
“A private jet?!” Eli exclaimed amazed “I’ve always wanted to fly in one of those! I heard their bathrooms are so fancy.”
“You only wanna fly because of their bathrooms?” Tammy responded puzzled.
“Of course not, it’s a private jet, how could I not wanna fly that?”
Angie gave a small giggle before continuing.
“So I recommend we get some supplies and good clothing” she advised, “And lots of bug spray.”
“And some survival gears” Eli added “You don’t know what could happen. What if our plane crashes on the island?”
“If our plane crashes, I hope it kills me quickly so I don’t have to suffer” Tammy stated.
“Tammy” Angie nudged her “Stop being so negative, survival is important.”
“I’m just saying” she shrugged, “If I’m gonna die, it better be a speedy death.”
“Well don’t worry, I’ve seen a lot of survival shows, I know a thing or two about survival. Plus I’ve been exploring since I was little, this trip was made for me.”
“Hey” Tammy snickered “Wanna bet to see if you’ll get together with Jackson on this trip.”
“Tammy” she frowned “I am not gonna bet on my love life.”
“Then how am I suppose to make this trip fun?”
Angie gave a small groan before stopping when she spotted a poster for a new dragon movie that was coming out.
“Jeez” she cringed at the poster of a dragon’s eye “This poster looks creepy.”
“I’m totally seeing that movie” Eli pointed.
“Why?” Angie questioned bewildered “It looks like a horror movie.”
“It’s not, it’s a fantasy with dragons, do you know how cool dragons are? If they were real, I’d keep one as a pet.”
“Too bad they don’t exist.”
“Yeah yeah,” he rolled his eyes as they proceeded down the mall.
When she got back home, Angie went into her room and began organizing everything she needed to bring. From clothes to personal hygiene to other miscellaneous things, she laid them out on her bed before placing them into a suitcase.
“Angie” he heard her father knock on her door.
“Come in.”
He stepped inside and shut the door “You’re packing already?”
“I wanna be prepared” she confessed, “Plus I’m feeling excited.”
“Oh I bet you are” he smiled “And um, are you sure you’ll be okay going on this trip without us?”
“I’m 18, dad, I can handle things on my own.”
“I know you can. I still can’t believe you’re going on this trip of a lifetime, I remember when you were little you were always outside exploring, and now you’re taking it to a new level.”
“Yeah” she chuckled “I can’t believe it’s actually happening. And if we succeed in finding this new species, I’ll have enough money for my college.”
“Let’s just hope you guys will succeed. And be careful, you don’t know what could happen on this trip.”
“I know dad, I’m always careful.”
He patted her shoulder before leaving her room. But now that she was alone, she couldn’t help but wonder what could happen on this trip. If anything goes wrong, will she be able to handle it?
