The Guardian Host-Resurrection-Book one of The Guardian Host Series

Chapter Insight

“The Abilities and powers vary for each race of being. You are a new species. No other Volistian has ever encountered a species like yours. However, I find that with your molecular structure,

I can accomplish far more than I ever could with any race of being in the past. It would be in your best interest to rest your human form tonight, and tomorrow, I can show you what I have been able to achieve. I will, however, give you an example of what you have to look forward to. Vincent, please turn off the lights in this room.”

I glanced at the clock on the wall; it was already 11:00 p.m., and I felt fatigued.

Wow, it’s getting late. I’ll make an exception for the chance to demonstrate my first new ability.

I was trying to comprehend why he’d want me to turn the lights off in the room.

Maybe I glow in the dark or something. I'll be upset if that’s what I’m looking forward to.

“Okay, I’ll turn off the lights,” I said as I stood up.

I reached the doorway and extended my right hand to the switch to turn off the lights. I paused momentarily with my index finger touching the top of the light switch.

This had better be good.

I closed my eyes and held my breath as I flipped the switch to the off position. After hearing the switch click, I prepared myself for whatever was supposed to happen.

I don’t feel anything. Maybe Volaxion is broken or something. I knew it.

I opened my right eye and peeked around, expecting something great to happen. I was perplexed because the light was still on.

Great, it must be a faulty light switch. I knew I’d be disappointed.

I opened my left eye and brought my head forward, resting it on the doorway.

“So what’s this power called, the damaged light switch? What a tremendous ability, Volaxion.”

Vincent, raise your head and look at your shadow.”

I raised my head and looked at the wall next to the door frame, expecting to see my shadow since the light was directly behind me.

I needed clarification.

Where’s my shadow?

I backed up a few steps to ensure I wasn’t looking in the wrong spot for my shadow.

I glanced to my left and right, but there was no shadow.

Was it just me?

I looked around the room for my shadow and noticed the end table next to the chair didn’t have a shadow either.

I chuckled slightly because this appeared like the lamest ability in the world. I wasn’t amused.

“What? Do I have the ability to make shadows disappear? Far out, Volaxion.”

No, Vincent. If you turn around and look at the light, it will clarify everything. Do not misjudge what I am revealing to you.”

I turned around and glanced towards the ceiling where the light was. I walked closer to it and noticed the light wasn’t even on. I stood directly under the light.

I held up my hand to block it from my view, believing it would cast a shadow onto my face, but nothing happened.

Okay, this was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. Never mind, I take that back. I have an alien living inside me. That’s probably on the top of the list.

I turned around, scanning everything in the room to see if there were any shadows, but I couldn’t see one. The room was a lot brighter than it was before.

How is the room brighter if the light isn’t on?

I was captivated. I slowly backed up until my back was resting against the wall.

“What’s going on, Volaxion? Where’s all the shadows? Where’s the light coming from?”

“One of your abilities is the gift of sight. You can now see everything as if it were in the light. Your eyesight is unaffected by darkness.

Your eyes can always draw light from my molecular form, giving you perfect sight. Nothing can hide from you in the shadows because there will be none.”

I chuckled at the thought of gaining such a unique ability.

I stand corrected. I guess this Volaxion guy knows what he’s doing after all.

I was so excited that if the abilities stopped with this one, I would’ve been the most satisfied man alive. I looked around the room, finally comprehending what was happening.

I could see things now that I couldn’t see before. Since there were no shadows, I could see everything.

I had to congratulate Volaxion on a job well done.

This will be convenient when I get up at night to use the bathroom.

“This is spectacular! It’s the grandest thing since the invention of the light bulb!”

“I knew you would be pleased. This ability is just one of many. The best is yet to come. As of this moment, you can do things that no other living human can or will ever do in their lifetime.”

I was so excited and overjoyed that I felt like I would cry. Not because I was unhappy but because of the sheer feeling of having such an incredible ability.

I was the first and last person in the world to have this ability. I was superior.

I’ve got to test this thing out.

I quickly stepped out of the room into the hallway that led to the kitchen.

Everything looked like the sun was radiating from every angle. I was like a child looking at everything as if witnessing it all for the first time.

I glanced at the sink in the kitchen, then I opened the cupboards and was astonished to be able to see everything with no shadows.

Every corner of every cabinet was visible, regardless of the angle I looked at. I left the kitchen and headed for the front door.

I opened the front door, and my mouth opened in amazement. I took in the sight of the world for the first time with my new eyesight.

“Wow, this is so beautiful. I can’t believe what I’m seeing right now. Can you see this Volaxion?”

I experience everything you do, Vincent. I agree, it is quite beautiful.”

I could see the trees more clearly since no shadows concealed the leaves. The grass was more vibrant and full of color. The night sky was the most beautiful sight of all.

I could see the stars shimmering brighter than I’d ever seen them shine before, but instead of a black sky, it was a dark blue color. I stood there for a few seconds longer, taking in the sight of everything around me.

Volaxion outdid himself with this one.

I turned around and walked back into the house, shutting the door behind me. Suddenly, a thought occurred to me.

I’m going to save so much money on electricity now.

“I see you have found an added benefit to this gift. You need to rest your human form. Your energy level is quite low, which can contribute to impaired decision-making. You must go to bed now, Vincent.”

“What are you, my mother?”

I didn’t need some alien living inside me to tell me what to do and when to do it.

I could’ve gone off on him, but I could see his point of view. I knew I was tired and I should go to bed.

I was still irritated that some alien told me to go to bed like a parent tells a child.

Calm down, Vincent. I’m sure he didn’t mean anything by it.

“I did not mean to insult you, Vincent, but I must look after your physical form. After all, I do share it with you. If this compels you to feel uncomfortable, I can abstain from telling you what your body needs until you wish for me to reveal it to you.”

That sounded like a good idea. I didn’t think about seeing it from his point of view.

He does have a point, but in all fairness, it was my body first.

“I’m sorry for lashing out at you. Please keep all that information to yourself until I need to hear it. I feel tired anyway, so I’m going to bed. You need to sleep, too, right?

Apology accepted. I will inform you of any bodily needs if it becomes too critical for me to ignore. To answer your last question, I do not require sleep. I must safeguard your physical and mental form. I continuously remain conscious.”

I shrugged as if to say ‘whatever,’ and then returned to the bedroom. I was still excited to see everything so distinctly and without any darkness.

I undressed down to my boxers and shirt and crawled into bed.

I guess Volaxion didn’t think of that.

I looked at the ceiling with a smile of achievement and said, “Good night, Volaxion. I’ll catch you in the morning.”

“Good night, Vincent. Although I will remain awake observing you sleep. As you say, I shall also see you in the morning.”

I rolled my eyes before closing them because he appeared to take everything I said so literally.

I hope he’s not like this all the time. It’s going to get annoying if that’s the case. I thought I was terrible, but he takes the cake for sure.

As soon as I finished that thought, everything went blank.

I must’ve been exhausted.

I sat up in bed and glanced at the clock. The time was nine in the morning, much later than I’m used to waking up to.

I’ll let it slide this time since I’ve got an alien living inside me now.

My morning routine went as usual, except for my conversations with Volaxion.

Getting used to having a living conscious being inside my head will surely be a challenge.

It’s hard enough dealing with my thoughts. Now I’m going to have to put up with someone else’s. I’m going to have to establish some boundaries. Besides that little issue, the benefits are astounding.

Everything seems vibrant now that I have this new vision ability.

I felt more powerful than I’d ever felt like I had a new surge of energy running through my body. I felt a slight tingle, like energy pulsing through my veins. I liked it.

Everything I did, even drinking or washing dishes, was done faster than usual. I couldn’t wait to see what Volaxion had in store today.

“So, Volax, what do ya say we get started with these new abilities.”

“Volax? Is this what you would call a nickname, Vincent?”

“Yes, sir. Volax has a pretty swell ring to it.

The shortening of my name does, as you say, sound ‘swell.’ This nickname may be more than satisfactory. You may continue to address me as Volax for as long as you like. Would you prefer I call you Vince instead of Vincent?”

I mulled it over in my head. I figured if that’s what he’d like to call me, he should go ahead and do it.

I could care less if he wants to save a few syllables.

“I don’t mind if you call me Vince. I’ll tell you what, you can call me Vince or Vincent. I’ll leave that decision up to you.”

“Very well, I will address you as Vince or Vincent, depending on my preferred name. You are starting to become my favorite host so far. However, to answer your previous question, yes, it is time for us to explore your newfound abilities.

I must warn you that your experience will be more than your imagination can fathom. I will be with you to advise and assist you in every way I can. After today, you will be an entirely different being. Are you ready to proceed?”

I walked to the front door as Volax was speaking, and I listened to him intently. After he finished speaking, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to stay calm.

I was anxious and excited at the same time. I exhaled as I opened the front door and stepped onto the porch.

I took in the sight of the world around me, knowing that in moments, I’d see it differently for the rest of my life.

I grinned as I thought about what that meant.

“Yes, Volax. I’m ready. Let’s get started.”

“As you wish, Vince. We shall now proceed.”
