Chapter 7
"No, I don't know why he did that." "I'm going to go talk to him."
"Are you insane? Don't do that."
"He's playing games with you," Ella screamed from Kylan's bed as she typed away at her laptop.
Kylan spat out his toothpaste and turned for a second towards the exit, "I don't know what I'm supposed to do, though."
"How about not falling for them?"
He rolled his eyes, rinsing his mouth and setting his brush to the side, wiping his lips. "It's not that easy, I had a crush on him for a year now, and he's finally paying attention to me - I had sex with him, Ella." She shrugged her shoulders, "Then don't say I didn't warn you when he breaks your heart. Not to mention he already did once, and you were near crying about it." "No, I was not," he scorned.
"Besides, you've repeated the same line for weeks now," she closed her laptop and set it aside, standing from her bed, "he's not gay."
"I know he's not."
"Then don't worry about him so much," she murmured, grabbing his bag of chips and eating a few, "if it works out, then it does. If not, it's not the end of the world."
Kylan paused for a moment; his mind was racing with thoughts. He was unsure whether he should say something to Jonah, and although he wanted to, he knew he would never have the nerve to approach him. He always became so tense, afraid, and struggled even to breathe when Jonah came near him. He had always admired him from far, that having him stand two feet away was causing his heart to melt.
He shook his head, erasing the desires that rushed his hormones. The silly crush he had was inhibiting his logical sense. After hearing what Ella had said Jonah had said when they talked, he knew the best decision would be to ignore his random advances and focus his attention elsewhere. Jonah hadn't like having sex with a guy, which was not exactly a big deal since not everyone will enjoy having sex with another person, and it was also true that they had not been friends before their one-night stand. Therefore, Jonah greeting him or even glancing at him was not a must.
As he sighed depressingly, he headed to his closet and grabbed a large sweater, throwing one to Ella as well. She followed him out of his bedroom and waited for him at the staircase when Kylan knocked on his father's bedroom. His father never replied on the first knock, and when he knocked on again, he heard a low grumbling curse word as his father shouted, "What?"
"Could I have money to buy groceries?" Kylan asked from the other side of the door. Silence answered him, and he heard his father reach for his pants, searching through his pockets. When the door opened, his father threw three fifty-dollar bills at his face and slammed the door shut instantly.
"Don't bother me," he hissed. Their relationship had been like this ever since his mother had passed, and finding out that his son was gay did not help the relationship either. Rather it drifted them apart, and his father had revealed countless times how much his sexual orientation had caused such a shame to run through his bones. He had also explicitly explained different manners as to why Kylan was nothing but a burden, and it had taken years for Kylan to recover from those words. He still loved his father, admired him even, and maybe being under the influence of drugs had caused the words to have been a bit too spiteful, but he trusted that there was a bit of hope and love in his father's heart. Ella knew about their lost relationship and had on numerous occasions asked if he wanted to move in with her family.
She lived with her older sister Carla, but it was in their culture to address anybody older than them as Aunt or Uncle. Their parents had moved overseas, and Carla and Ella did not want to follow them out there. Since Carla was in her thirties, she gladly took care of her younger sibling.
Kylan bent over to grab the bills that had fallen on the floor, and they exited the home. She drove to the grocery store near the home, but when they arrived there, it was closed.
Ella groaned, "This is such a hassle." Kylan nodded in agreement, but as Ella glanced in his direction, she noticed his gloomy eyes staring depressively at the trees passing by as they drove to a different grocery store. He always became this way after speaking with his father, which always pained her to watch.
As they parked, he descended and rushed to the cart. As per usual, Ella jumped inside the cart, and they began their adventure throughout the store. They had been together ever since they were toddlers, and she had been there with the passing of his mother, the divorce of her parents, and when they all moved overseas. They had been through thick and thin together, to the point that they headed to the grocery store by themselves and learned to cook at the age of eleven. Kylan grabbed a bag of frozen vegetables, "We could make the usual vegetables, chicken, and rice. Or mashed potatoes and gravy?"
Ella bit her bottom lip, catching the bag and placing it beside her in the cart as Kylan continued to observe different items, "I kinda wanted spaghetti and meatball."

"I can make some if you want. It might take a bit longer, though. Are you hungry?"
"Sorta," she sighed, but an idea brightened in her mind. "Let's buy snacks for the time the meatballs cook."
He turned towards her with a long smile, "Certainly." That was the nerdy side of him, and she chuckled as he pushed his glasses higher up the bridge of his nose. They continued down the ally, grabbing different items and her pointing towards the ones she wanted. It came to the point where they had stolen a bit of candy in their pockets and were picking at them in the store, laughing with one another. The care they had for one another was terribly thick, that neither could sustain something bad happening to the other. If Kylan were bleeding, Ella would cry as well. If Ella were having a bad day, Kylan would be moody as well. Their lives were so in sync that even others would get annoyed by their closeness.
As they turned down another aisle, they both stopped when their eyes landed on the one person they did not expect to see. They were unsure what had been happening lately, and both blinked furiously, attempting to get rid of the illusion. They had been staring terribly hard, that before they could turn back the other way, he looked up and met the two gazes he had not expected to find. For one, he had never seen them in this neighborhood, which ideally meant I was not their neighborhood.
Jonah deposed the bottle of wine from the shelf, and without saying a word to either of them, turned the opposite direction and left that aisle. He did not even glance backward at them, simply continued whistling his tune and ignoring their presence entirely. When he left, and a long exhale escaped Kylan's tongue, Ella crossed her arm with a questioning raised eyebrow.
When they arrived home and settled the ingredients in the kitchen, they had not yet spoken about seeing him. Kylan nor Ella had said something about him, and it seemed as if Kylan was stuck in his thoughts, lethargically deposing the things in the fridge. It annoyed Ella to the point that she groaned in frustration.
Kylan glanced towards her, "What's wrong?"
"You," she admitted, "you're upset that he didn't say anything to you."
He frowned, "No, I'm not. I mean, it kind of sucks, but I'm just confused-"
"I don't know why you're confused. He does not like you. He's just playing with your feelings because you probably told him how much you like him while you were drunk, and you had sex with him. It's annoying me that you're upset." Kylan raised an eyebrow in her direction, "I can't be upset?"

"No, not when I warned you."
"He hasn't done anything wrong, though-"
"Now you're just making stupid excuses, and I'm going to be honest with you. It's pissing me off," She scowled. His lips clamped shut as she continued, "He acts as if you don't even exist, had sex with you, and ignored you the next day." He paused for a moment before saying, "But he kissed me in front of Jasmine_"
"When are you going to understand that that little two-second kiss doesn't mean anything, Ky?" she turned away from him and headed for the exit, "He's not right for you, and I don't care how much you try to make excuses, I'm never letting this happen."
"Are you going to let me speak?" he glowered, annoyed that she interrupted every single of his sentence.
"No," she said, her voice tightening, "because I don't want to hear about the same thing over and over again. He doesn't like you, so get over him. And I'm going home since this conversation made me mad."
Before he could say anything back, she stormed out of the kitchen and exited the home, slamming the door shut. The home suddenly reached a depressive silence that he hated, and even the meatballs he was supposed to do, he didn't want to make them anymore. He often had arguments with Ella, and he hated every last one of them since it made him very upset, and she was aware of that. He never was one to stand up for himself in a stubborn manner, which was why he did not interrupt her sentences even once. However, she didn't expect her to storm out of the kitchen. He placed everything in the fridge, turned off the light, and headed to the staircase for his bedroom.
However, before he could reach his bedroom, the doorbell rang, which did strike him as odd since Ella knew never to do that; it annoyed his father. He descended the stairs rapidly, hoping the person would not ring a third time, and he was in such a hurry that he did not check the peephole. Before he could even realize and process who it was, lips were slammed onto his, and his jaw was being gripped forcefully by a pair of robust hands. He only realized it was Jonah from the familiar scent and the black hair that fell above his eyes as he deepened their kiss.
Kylan reached for his wrist to push him away, but the kiss was causing his stomach to flutter with butterflies that he simply reached in his mouth with his own tongue and placed to work the tricks he was used to. He enveloped his tongue, and the same reaction happened to Jonah as he grunted against the kiss, feeling his blood become warm. Jonah regained the dominance, biting his bottom lip seductively and causing a small moan to escape Kylan's lips. Then, as his mouth pulled apart even more, he quickly placed his tongue there and felt the entire insides of his mouth before Kylan collided with him. It was as if the kiss had been rehearsed, and the performance was playing, the kiss having such fluidity and tenderness that even Kylan was stunned.
It was Jonah who pulled apart first and winked, wiping the corner of his mouth. His fingers had remained on Kylan's jaw, and he turned his face to place a soft peck on Kylan's cheek. Then, before Kylan could regain the confidence and reduce the shock enough to say something, Jonah pulled apart and jogged to his car, winking before turning on his motor and driving away.
