The Gay Nerd Who Stole His Heart

Chapter 16

"Yes, through ball, hit the through ball!"

Kylan yelled as he sprinted past the defender. Instead, Jonah took the shot and missed the net entirely. One thing that Kylan did not joke around or hid his tongue about was soccer. He played with serious competitiveness, and having Jonah being detrimental to the team because of a personal problem they had with each other was one thing he was not going to tolerate. The field was his freedom, where he felt he could forget about all the raw emotions of life and live in the moment; however, with Jonah avoiding passing him the ball or ignoring him entirely, it was losing the effect the game had.

After that play, as Jonah marched back, Kylan ran past him and said, "You could've found me on that one." The adrenaline and the hustle to return, as well as being on the field was freeing him from the habitual anxiety and uneasiness he felt when speaking to Jonah. Instead, with a frown on his face, and marched backward, staring at Jonah, who scoffed and turned around to face the ball.

"Why would I pass it to you, Kylan?"

"I know you're mad," Kylan hissed, "but this isn't about being mad. It's me trying to look the best I can for tryouts."

"You're right, always all about you, Ky."

Kylan jumped in front of him with broadened shoulders, "What the hell is your problem?" "My problem?"

"Yea," he hissed, "You've been acting like I ruined your whole life when I didn't, and I apologized to you, so why are you always angry when you see me." Kylan was furious; soccer was the only place where all the labels he was given did not matter, and he did not feel ashamed any longer; Jonah was ruining that.

Jonah stopped marching backward and aggressively stepped towards Kylan, "You want to know why I've been acting like this?" The professor blew the whistle repeatedly, rushing towards the two, as did Bradley, who placed his palm on Jonah's chest and pushed him backward.

"Calm down, Jonah," he murmured; he was on the other team but had been hearing the little argument. However, it seriously seemed as if they were ready to fight one another, and he knew it was more than just soccer.

Kylan shrugged his shoulders, "Just play the fucking game."

"I was playing the game until you came to me and yelled at me for not passing you the ball."

"Then next time, pass the damn ball-"

"Stop it," The Coach screamed, coming in front of Kylan, who was attempting to step forward to reach Jonah. His anger in the field was very intense since he cared so much about the sport. Therefore, he attempted to brush past the Coach, who widened his arms to restrain him.

Jonah scoffed, "Or next time, just let me do what the hell I want to do."

"I was wide open, Jonah. That was a terrible shot, and I would've been closer to goal," Kylan's voice tightened, "at least have some common sense in you."

"Common sense? You want to talk about common sense, Kylan? Let's talk about the fact that you went and got yourself a little girlfriend. That's not common sense at all."

Kylan frowned, "What are you talking about? And what does that have to do with giving the ball away like an idiot-" "Enough!"

The coach screamed at the top of his lungs, and both boys finally quieted down but were breathing heavily, with both their shoulders broadened. Kylan was probably going to reflect on what occurred and feel a bit bad about what he yelled, but at the moment, he was furious. Bradley pushed Jonah backward, and he took a few steps back, "What's wrong with you, man?"

"Both of you are out of this game," the Coach settled, pointing towards the bench. Kylan marched towards the bench angrily while Jonah cursed, storming off to the school building. Bradley was calling out for Jonah, who spun around to flip him the bird before continuing his march inside the building. It wasn't until after the game was over that Coach approached Kylan on the bench and said, "You both are obviously going to make the team, but this cannot happen. You need to figure out your differences."

Kylan had calmed down, and all the aggression had settled. He had returned to being his calm, collected, shy Kylan, and as Bradley approached him afterward, he struggled even to look him in the eye. "Kylan," Bradley said as he took a seat beside him, "you need to talk to him. I don't know why he's been acting this way, but this isn't right, and neither is you acting like you aren't noticing it."

Kylan cleared his throat, getting past all the frightened nerves from talking to Bradley as he said, "You're right." Afterward, Bradley patted him on the back, and Kylan stood to his feet, heading towards the school building and giving himself a bit of a pep talk to gain a bit of confidence. Jonah did appear seriously frustrated and upset, and he was confused about his sentence about common sense and how Kylan finding a girlfriend was not. He wondered what he meant by that and entered the school building, attempting to find reasons why Jonah could have said that. However, it was not long until he found Jonah perched over a fountain, drinking water and splashing his face. He was attempting to cool himself down since the anger made him feel a bit warm and stressed.

However, instantly when he glanced upwards and saw Kylan's, he shook his head and cursed under his breath, wiping his face with the end of his shirt. Kylan's breath got caught in his throat as Jonah lifted his shirt and showed his toned abs that Kylan could not peel his eyes from. It caused his entire face to turn red, and it did not settle until Jonah let go of his shirt. He did not appear to have cooled down after their small argument, and with a tightened jaw, he hissed, "Leave me alone, Ky."

Kylan gulped; his voice sounded much more upset than angry. "I think we should talk," Kylan muttered, and Jonah chuckled.

"Talk about what exactly?"

He paused for a moment, letting a sigh escape his lips before he replied, "I don't know what's going on."

Jonah scoffed, "I don't know either."

"Why are you still mad at me?" Kylan asked with desperation in his tone, "Did I do something wrong?"

With a raised eyebrow, staring back at him as if he was a lunatic, Jonah shook his head, "How are you so clueless?" "What do you mean "

"That night when your dad almost beat the brain out of you because you were drunk, I took the hits, and I got you out of there. He pushed all your furniture everywhere and broke glass all over the place, and the only reason you had not a scratch on you was because I helped you," his voice tightened. "However, instead, you scream at me that you don't even like me at all, that I'm just a stranger to you, and that I was a mistake?"

Kylan opened his mouth to speak, but Jonah raised his hand, "Don't start talking until I'm done." When he noticed Kylan's stance become rigid, but his lips clamped shut, he continued, "I was somewhat mad over that, but nothing I couldn't get over. But the fact that you suddenly find yourself a little girlfriend to be around? That's what bothers me."

"You messed me up, Ky," he screamed, the veins on his neck appearing as he bit his bottom lip angrily. "You made me question my own identity, and I don't even know if I'm gay or straight now because of you, all because we had sex that day. And now, you found yourself a girlfriend, as if none of what we did even mattered?" He shook his head, "I spent nights shuffling in my bed, trying to find out what was wrong with me. Being with another guy grossed me out, sent shivers down my spine, but there's something about you that makes me feel calm and collected but nervous at the same time, and it's infuriating. I've had sex with so many girls before, but I've been craving you again. There's something about you that I just can't put my finger on, and it's pissing me off. Now, to think that my mind is racing with thoughts about what is going on and to find you making out with your girlfriend the next morning, that's what is pissing me off. Did you mean it when you said you liked me? And when you had a crush on me for two years?"

Kylan rapidly nodded his head, in shock about what he was hearing. However, the guilt was beginning to bite on his flesh, "Yes, I did-"

"Then why can't you accept me?" Jonah seemed to be begging, a heartfelt tone in his voice.

Kylan was unable to turn away as he saw the navy eyes staring back at him, trembling, filled with hurt and pain, but also confusion. It was as if he was leaning into Kylan to fix him, but it also angered him that he needed Kylan to be fixed and to understand himself. Kylan had a blank stare on his face as he stepped forward, "I do accept you."

"No, you don't. You dumped me on the side, and that's not fair to me."

"That's not what I intended to do, Jonah. I thought you hated me "

"Regardless of what you intended or not, that's what happened," he snarled. "You trampled me over, got my mind all fucked, then went back on your words, leaving me all on my own."

Kylan felt seriously bad, and the end of his eyebrows fell, "Jonah, I'm sorry."

"It's too late to say sorry, Kylan," he breathed, "you have a girlfriend, and it's funny since you never even considered maybe being with me."

"Jonah I—"

"Jonah, are you here?" They heard the door open, and footsteps approached. Neither of them moved as Bradley approached them, noticing the expression behind both their eyes; he knew they had not fixed their issues yet. "Are you okay?" Bradley asked Kylan first, who slowly nodded his head, scratching the back of his neck uneasily. When Jonah heard that answer, he scoffed and stormed away from them, having Bradley follow him at his tail while Kylan stood in silence, pondering in his own thoughts.
