Chapter 52

ANDREAS

Dreyfus and Aran were determined.

As we sped across the city and the surroundings blurred around us, they were leading the hunt, using their senses to locate any vampires in the capital. I did not match their speed. If I do, I might as well reveal my true identity. As much as possible, I’d like to keep it a secret. It was already dangerous enough that Lord Theon knew about me. I can’t keep adding to that list, especially when I still can’t fully trust Dreyfus and Aran.

So I decided to stay on top of one of the establishments and let them do the hunting. Aiden stood behind me,

silent.

“I will join the hun too,” he announced later on and I faced him.

“I need you in the manor. I don’t trust anyone near Henrietta after everything that has happened to her.”

“She might have already been wondering about what’s going on and why the guards are there.”

I nodded. I know Henrietta had a lot of questions after I healed her with my blood. I know she’s just waiting for the right time to ask me. I have been preparing myself on what to tell her–should I tell her about the truth? Or

should I keep lying?

“Just make up some excuse. I’ll explain to her once I see her.”

“Will you tell her the truth then?”

I looked at him and perhaps he read what was on my face that he sighed. “I just hope you’re making the right decision, Andreas.”

“I know. I’ve been very careful. The right time will come for everything. For now, we have to capture these vampires. We have to capture them all before the royal guards do.”

Aiden nodded and then he was gone in front of me. I faced the capital once again. I do not know exactly what these vampires and werewolves are up to but I have to make sure I’ll find out about it tonight.

I got down from where I was standing and looked around. Dreyfus and Aran have already sc att ered to look for

the vampires roaming around. If they are similar to how Aran was before I caught him would have to hurry before they could find another victim.

it would be a problem. We

My senses heightened as tried to sense my surroundings. If there are vampires nearby, I would know but in the area where I was, there was nothing. So I started to move, only to hear the sounds of footsteps and the horses’

hooves.

I muttered a curse inside my head as I realized who it was.

“Your Highness.”

Philip got down from his horse. The sword glinted from his hand and behind him were dozens of royal guards.

“What brings you out here?” I asked and he gave me a look..

“I am here to capture the vampires that has been going on a killing spree, brother. Now, I want you to tell me leads at your disposal.”

Finding these vampires is challenging enough. Having the Crown Prince’s party not able to locate them is another challenge. As much as possible, I don’t want them to find the vampires. I want to be able to find them and release them from whatever was done to them.

“I have no strong leads as of the moment, Your Highness. All I know is that they’ve been roaming around the capital. I don’t know how many but judging from the recent victim, it could only be one vampire or two.”

He nodded and looked at the guards behind him. “You heard him. Sca tter around the area where the last victim. was found. It couldn’t have gotten far.”

Most probably, the vampire would have continued his life after his meal like it did not just kill another creature. However, if we’re talking about a vampire that had the same behavior as Aran, then it might be searching for another victim. And most probably, it’s not going to be in the same area where it left his first victim. It’ll find another one to satiate its urges.

The guards immediately followed and dispersed all throughout. Philip remained and he looked at me. “Where would you go?”

“I have to search other locations as well,” I answered.

“I have already placed guards in Henrietta’s residence. She’s safe.”

I nodded, I did not like the idea of him placing guards around her but it was better than nothing. As much as I want to not trust him, placing guards to protect Henrietta was something I am thankful for.

Before I could say something, he gently kicked his horse and he was off to somewhere.

With a heavy sigh. I turned my attention back to the streets of the capital. If I was lucky, Philip and his guards would remain in the area where the victim was found.

Dreyfus and Aran were still out there, combing through the shadows for any signs of the vampires. I needed to trust in their abilities while I pursued my own leads.

As I navigated through the labyrinthine alleys and streets, my senses remained on high alert, scanning for any hints of vampiric presence. The night was alive with the sounds of the city, but beneath the surface lurked a darkness that threatened to consume all in its path. Vampires are already dangerous in their own right. However, they become even more dangerous with insatiable hunger like what happened to Aran the night he attacked.

Henrietta.

Although, I have been thinking about how it was possible for him to return to his normal state after being a mindless creature that night. He returned to normal when he was imprisoned. Were those urges only temporary? How does one get back to normal from that?

Suddenly, a faint whisper of movement caught my attention, and I froze, every nerve in my body tingling with anticipation. I followed the sound, my footsteps silent as a wraith, until I reached a deserted alleyway cloaked in

shadows.

My senses tell me it is what I have been looking for.

Realizing that the alleyway had no other way out except the path where I was standing, I decided to make my presence known. However, the vampire continued to huddle in the dark, grunting.

I made myself prepared should there be any unprecedented attack.

I

As I stepped closer, the vampire seemed to hiss, pressing itself as close as possible to the cold wall.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” I said, trying to get my voice as calm as possible. I don’t plan on hurting them. I plan

to cure and isolate them until I find out how Aran was able to return to normal.

Despite the warning hiss, I continued to approach cautiously, keeping my movements slow and deliberate. The vampire’s defensive posture spoke volumes about its fear and uncertainty, but I couldn’t afford to let that hinder

my mission. This vampire is certainly not a normal one.

“I mean you no harm,” I reiterated, hoping to convey sincerity in my words. “I’m here to help.”

The vampire’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, its fangs gleaming in the dim light of the alley. It seemed torn between its instinct to flee and its curiosity about my intentions.

With a deep breath, I extended my hand in a gesture of peace, inching closer until I was within arm’s reach. The vampire recoiled slightly, but to my surprise, it didn’t lash out.

“I know you’re scared,” I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. “But you don’t have to be. I can help you.”

For a long moment, there was only silence as the vampire regarded me with wary eyes. Then, slowly, it began to relax, its tense muscles gradually easing as it tentatively reached out to touch my outstretched hand.

The moment our skin made contact, a surge of energy pulsed between us, a tangible connection that transcended words. In that fleeting instant, I sensed the vampire’s turmoil, its anguish, and desperation mingling with a glimmer of hope.

And then, without warning, the tranquility of the moment shattered as the vampire suddenly lunged forward, its fangs bared in a primal display of aggression.

Instinct took over as I swiftly sidestepped the attack, narrowly avoiding the razor-sharp teeth that aimed at my arm. Despite the danger, I made a conscious effort not to retaliate with lethal force, knowing that this creature was a victim of circumstance.

Instead, I focused on subduing the vampire without causing any unnecessary harm. With a series of swift movements, I deftly disarmed the creature, immobilizing it with precise yet gentle maneuvers.

The vampire struggled against my hold, thrashing and hissing as it still wanted to hurt me. Gradually, its resistance waned, its struggles tapering off until it lay still in my grasp, exhausted and defeated.

Just as I was about to assess the vampire’s condition further, Dreyfus appeared at the mouth of the alley, her expression grave.

“Andreas,” he called out, urgency lacing his voice. Then his eyes went to the vampire I subdued. When he saw that it was not dead, I saw the relief cross his features.

“Something has happened at the manor. Aiden sent me to get you.”

“There are vampires in the manor and there are quite a number of them. Aiden and Aran won’t be able to deal with that any longer.”

I froze. “Are you talking about the manor on the outskirts of the Capital?”

Without hesitation, I snapped the vampire’s neck, making him unconscious. In a matter of minutes, he will gain

“Place him inside the catacombs and get to the manor as soon as possible.”

Dreyfus nodded and before he could say something, I was already running to where Henrietta was, hoping that

she’s safe and unharmed.
