The Dragon's Keeper

Chapter 11 Chase The Sun

Light hit my eye lids and a shiver tickled my spine in the early morning light. I felt warmth spread through my body. I snuggled deeper into the warmth.

Then I heard birds chirping around us.

Moaning, I blinked my heavy eyes.

Where were we? I tried to orient myself as I looked around.

I gasped at the sun cresting over the sea. The hues of pink and orange painted the sky. The soft salty sea breeze swept across my bare arms. The sound of the waves hitting the beach soothed my soul. The sun was calling out to me. We were almost there...

A soft snore tickled my ear, and I giggled.

"Wake up!" I whisper softly, shaking Jamie's soulder.

James had fallen asleep with his arms around me. I guess he was cold too.

Jamie groaned. "What time is it?"

"Dawn," I sighed in awe.

"Mmm... I'm hungry," he grumbled.

Jamie dug out the stone and rubbed it.

I was hungry too. I was getting used to eating on a regular basis, and now my tummy was waging war with me letting everyone know that it must be fed!

We enjoyed a breakfast of warm bread and cheese, with some fruit and some kind of tasty juice, while we watched the sun inch it's way up to the sky.

"So, now that we are at the edge of the sea, how do we cross," he asked, stuffing the last of his bread in his mouth.

"I don't..." I started to say, but was cut off.

At the question, Midnight ran into the sea. The glowing light of the sun glistened on his scales. He made a deep humming noise.

Suddenly a small vessel, in the shape of a large leaf, appeared in the water before us. It was shiny like a pearl, and solid like wood, with a soft bench in the middle for us to sit on. There was no way to steer the boat, but it didn't stop Midnight from jumping in.

We looked at each other and in silent agreement, we climbed in after Midnight.

Jamie and I were just settling ourselves on the bench, and looking around for anything to help push the boat forward.

"How are we supposed to get this thing to move?" he asked me.

Suddenly the boat jerked of it's own accord and raced forward.

My hair was whipping me in the face, but I laughed out loud. I had not had so much fun in my entire life! Something about the speed and the wind rushing past called to my blood for more.

"I guess the boat knows where we are going!" I tried to speak over the wind.

Jamie laughed, too.

"It feels like we are chasing the sun!" he shouted.

And he was right. We were headed directly into the sun.

Midnight settled contentedly in my lap, while Jamie pulled me up into his arms. Everything felt perfect. This was what life was all about. Family; Love; and adventure on the high seas....

I look over at Jamie.

"It feels like he knows our adventure is almost done. Like he knows his destiny..."

I said sadly.

"I bet he does. He has directed us our whole way," Jamie responds.

Eventually the gentle swaying of the small boat rocks us back to sleep again.

Hours later, I wake with a start.

At first I don't know what woke me. Then I looked around and gasp at what I saw.

Our boat had run aground. We were on an Island of lush trees and vegetation that I couldn't identify. Sweet birds song drifted, but I didn't recognize the birds. Rocks of every color of the rainbow, and water the shimmered like opal surrounded us.

I jumped up.

"Jamie we are here!" I shouted.

Jamie jerked awake, too. Then he smiled at me and my heart melted a little bit.

"Okay, Midnight," he said. "Go do your thing..."

Midnight didn't need any more invitation than that. He jumped out of the boat and raced to a golden rock and placed his snout onto the rock.

A low vibration emanated from the rock and spread in a pulse of purple magic.

Stars glittered through the air as magic was released back to the earth. Sparks lit up the air. Music played on the breeze. A rightness was felt in the air.

We did it! Or at least Midnight did it.

Jamie looked at me.

"Looks like our adventure is finally over..." He said with a smirk.

"No, I think our adventure is just beginning...." I assured him.
