The Dragon Prince

Chapter A Heartbreaking Loss

Alyssa

Everything happened so fast! We found Vincent's parents lying in pools of blood. I don't remember who called the Doctor, but three appeared inside the room, including Dr. Solus. Audrey was in shock, tears streaming down her face. Alexandria wouldn't stop yelling at everyone despite the fact they were only trying to help.

But Vincent. I've never seen this expression on his face. He stood over his mother, trying to stop the bleeding. He looked emotionless. It was chaos. The next thing I knew, we were all at the hospital. I threw up after the shock passed. I don't know if it was from tonight or if it was traveling from one place to another instantly.

Dr. Solus yelled at the intercom, saying he needed all available personnel to tend to the King and Queen, and they both required surgery. I was running with Vincent and others, but the nurse stopped us from going further.

"I'm not leaving!" Alexandria growled.

"I'm sorry, but you need to give the doctors the space they need to do their job," the nurse said.

Alexandria was screaming at the top of her lungs at the nurse.

"Alex, you need to stop!" Vincent got on his knees and started breathing heavily. "I don't feel so good," he rasped.

"Vincent!" I rushed to his side.

"Stand back!" The nurse kneeled by Vincent. "We need help over here!" she yelled as the other nurse placed him on a stretcher. "Please stay back!"

"Don't you tell me what I can or can't do! I'm the Princess of Varrfarrinn; I can do whatever I damn well please," Alex snarled as she was about to have a forced shift.

"Alex, you need to stop," I said, touching her shoulder. "This isn't going to help your parents or Vincent,"

"I'll let you know as soon as I know something, your highness," the nurse said, then left.

"You fucking better!" Alex threatened.

"Alex, I know it's not my place," I said.

"That's right, so back the hell off!" Alexandria growled. Alexandria's eyes glow; she is about to lose control of her dragon.

"I know how stressed you are, but you are forgetting that your sister is here too, and she needs you," I said. "I know you are always trying to be tough. But right now, she needs you to be with and hold her. So drop the tough bitch act, and be the sister Audrey needs,"

For a moment, I thought Alexandria would yell at me. But her shoulders fell, and she looked defeated. Her eyes returned to normal, and she embraced Audrey. "It's going to be alright; we have a strong family,"

"Nicely done, I was getting sick of the tough bitch act," Dahlia praised.

"I understand her. Alex is just worried," I said.

"I'm sure they will be alright, but we should get a first aid kit or some help. We are still bleeding," Dahlia pointed out the sharp pain on my sides. I guess the adrenaline wore off.

Too bad I can only use my healing power to heal others, not myself. Never heard of healing magic that only works like that." I did manage to find bandages and started to clean the wound. Five holes that damn dragon made on my sides. Most had stopped bleeding, but the cuts on my scars were still bleeding. I hissed at the pain when I applied the alcohol to the wound.

"Need any help?" Alexandria said as she walked through the door. I jumped in surprise, knocking over medical supplies. "I didn't mean to spook you, I'm sorry,"

"Is there any news on your parents?" I asked.

"No, no one has come out of the operating room. I can't lose my parents, Vincent and Audrey; I still need them," Alex cried as I began to hug her. "What are you doing?"

"It's alright to show your emotions. They'll be alright," I smiled at Alex.

"Both of my parents are in there, and Vincent as well, and I have no idea what to do. I don't know to comfort my own sister," Alexandria started to break down. I know she's my mate's sister, but I could feel she had no idea how to deal with all these emotions. I stood there and let her cry on my shoulders.

"The only thing we can do is wait. Getting angry at people who are trying to help will not help anyone," I said.

Alexandria took a few deep breaths. "You're right,"

Alex is sweet when she's not busy being a bitch. I can't believe she's to be my future sister-in-law.

"Izzy and Jacob are with Audrey, please don't tell them I cried," Alex said.

"A secret between us gals," I winked as we walked to Izzy and Jacob, with Audrey sleeping on Jacob. She cried herself to sleep, poor thing.

"How is she?" I asked.

"She won't stop crying; I'm glad she managed to fall asleep." Jacob stroked Audrey's cheeks.

I could see the pain in Jacob's eyes; he was trying his best to comfort Audrey.

"Guys, what's going on?" Izzy said. "Audrey wouldn't stop crying to tell us what happened,"

"It's-they," Alex regained her composure when she took a breath. "Somebody attacked my parents; they are both in surgery," Alex said.

"WHAT!?" Izzy yelled.

"Don't wake up Audrey," Jacob shushed.

Izzy then looked around for Vincent. "Where's Vincent? You would think he would've gotten the news that he's parents were almost killed,"

Alex and I both looked away.

"Guys, you're scaring me," Izzy covered her mouth with her eyes widening, fearing the worst.

"Vincent is in surgery too," Alex said as Jacob and Izzy looked at us with shock. "Four dragons breached the perimeter, and Vincent got hurt in the fight. Can you fill them in, Alyssa, I have a few calls to make."

"Of course," I smiled at him as she walked away.

"I've never seen Alexandria like this before," Izzy said.

"She's trying to stay strong, it's hard when half of your family is in surgery," I said.

"How serious is this?" Izzy asked.

"I don't know, they lost a lot of blood. All we can do is wait,"

"We should have been there!" Jacob was fuming.

"There was nothing you could've done; Alex told me that there were fires all over the city," I said.

"Yeah, we were helping the other put the fire out. Annabeth wanted to help put the fires out in the fairy village. Then we heard a royal was in the hospital, so we went straight here." Izzy explained.

"Alyssa, what exactly happened?" Jacob asked me.

I explained everything that transpired: how the Wind Tower was destroyed, the fight with the four dragons, and how the Fire Tower was saved. I even told them I killed a Lightning Dragon and what happened when we arrived at the palace.

"That fucker was going to kill Vincent; you did what was necessary to protect your mate. The Goddess will not hold you accountable for that." Izzy hugged me. "How are you holding up in the most critical question?"

"I honestly don't know, I killed someone, and Vincent is in surgery. I can't lose him. I just don't know what is happening right now," I cried on Izzy's shoulder.

Two hours passed, and we still had no news; Dahlia kept contacting Astarot, but he had yet to respond to our call. I'm guessing since Vincent is under anesthesia, so is Astarot. It's morning now, and I hadn't slept all night, like most people here. Alex called Scott, Tristan, and Rory to go and get the bodies of the invading dragons. And to see if any were alive for interrogation. They found the decapitated Ice Dragon that Vincent killed; his throat was scorched with white fire. Vincent brutally killed him.

Scott, Tristan, and Rory approached us. "Any news?" Alex said.

"We started at the fire tower and picked up the fire dragon. He's wounded, alive, and locked up," Scott said.

"For now!" Alex growled.

"We found the bodies of the other three dragons. They are all in the morgue now. Vincent brutally killed the ice dragon. We told them to let you know they find anything of use," Tristan said.

"We need to know everything about them; find everything you can about the bastard that attacked us," Alex ordered.

"Doctor Solus!" I said, running to him as the others followed.

"It's about damn time! We've been waiting for over two hours," Alex crossed their arms.

"Can you and Audrey come with me so we can talk?" Doctor Solus said.

"Audrey needs rest, I'll come with you," Alex said.

"Very well," Doctor said as Alex followed him.

"Alyssa, come with me; you're my brother's mate, as far as I'm concerned, you're family," Alex smiled.

Without hesitation, I followed Doctor Solus and Alexandria.

"How's my family?" Alex said. The three of us were standing in a private meeting room in the hospital.

"Your parents were shot, and I'm so sorry, Princess Alex, but his majesty King Zayne, your father didn't make it," Doctor Solus said with grief.

"NO! There must be somthing you can do?" Alex seethed.

"I'm sorry, Alex, but he was already dead when we got him n the operating table. There was nothing we could do," Doctor Solus tried to comfort Alex, but her rage reached a boiling point.

"Alex, you need to calm down," I said.

Alex looked at me, her eyes black with rage; her dragon was about to surface. "What about my mother, and Vincent?"

"Vincent will wake up soon, but your mother is still in surgery. Dr. Turner is working on her now and doing everything she can," Dr. Solus said. "I won't lie to the both of you; it's terrible. Queen Rosetta lost a lot of blood, and the bullet almost missed her heart. It's the only reason she's still alive. Your mother is a fighter, a white dragon, no less; I have faith she will pull through,"

"Let me know as soon as you know anything else," Alex said.

"I want to see Vincent!" I burled out. "I can't feel the bond between us. Dahlia is growing restless,"

"Anesthesia temporally blocks the mate bond; not sure why it does that, but I assure you that Vincent is fine and still in surgery. I noticed that his wounds already starting to heal. I will let you know when he's in the ICU so you can see him," Dr. Solus explained.

"Thank you," I smiled as Dr. Solus left. "Alex, I'm sorry about your father,"

"Thank you, we have to tell the others," Alex walked out of the meeting room in tears, and Jacob, Izzy, and the others looked at us with suspense and fear.

"What did the doctor say?" Izzy said.

"What's wrong?" Rory said.

"The King is dead," Alex said.

Everyone gasped.

"What about Vincent? You're mother?" Jacob said.

"Vincent is doing fine, but my mother is still in surgery. They don't know if she will make it," Alex said. "Scott, Tristan, I want you to guard the fire dragon and call me as soon as he wakes up,"

"Yes ma'am," Scott nodded and walked off with Tristan.

Audrey woke up when they slammed the door. She looked at Alex. "Alex, any news? What happened?"

"Alyssa, can you do me a favor? I will take Audrey outside to tell her, just in case she won't be able to control her emotions. Can you tell Vincent when he wakes up? He can hold his emotions better when you are with him. He'll take it better when he hears the news from you," Alex said.

"I'll tell him," I nodded.

"Audrey come with me," Alex said softly.

Audrey and Alex left to go outside.

"Poor girl," Izzy said. "Audrey lost her biological parents to dragon hunters; if she has to endure the pain of losing those who raised her, I don't think she'll recover,"

"How did this happen?" Jacob asked.

"The fires were a distraction to get to the towers, and I think they were also a distraction," I speculated.

"You should know!" Rory hissed.

"What's that soppose to mean?" I said.

"You know damn well what I mean?" Rory smiled. "Ever since you arrived, things have been messed up, and you've caused nothing but trouble. And now you're living at the palace; you can get someone into the royal palace unnoticed," Rory said.

"Are you serious right now?" Izzy was shocked at Rory's words.

"How can you be so blind?! That freak is probably behind everything! And she has Vincent wrapped around her finger! This bitch is not the fated mate to Vincent. I AM!"

I've had enough of her. I punched her in the face. "Listen here, you bitch! If you call me a freak again, I'll kill you; I had nothing to do with this. I was fighting the dragons that broke through the barrier; I had to kill two of them to survive! So get off your high horse and leave me the hell alone! And if you ever say that Vincent is your mate again, death will be a mercy!"

Rory looked at me with a busted lip, rage in her eyes. "You'll regret that," Rory raised her hand to return the favor, but Izzy stepped in between us.

"Don't even think about it," Izzy's eyes flashed.

"You're still protecting that whore?!" Rory huffed.

"I think it's best if you leave, Rory," Jacob threatened.

"I'd watch you're back freak. I'm onto you," Rory left without further issue.

"About time someone hit her, I just sorry it wasn't me," Izzy said as I laughed.

Even though we were still all worried, it was nice to laugh a little. Then, the nurse approached us, and we were guided to his room to see him. I almost broke down when I saw him. Vincent's entire upper body was wrapped in bandages. "This is all my fault. I should have stayed with him and helped him fight, but he told me to chase after the other dragon that would destroy the fire tower,"

"None of this is your fault, Alyssa," Jacob said.

"He's right, don't let Rory's words get into your head. You're our friend and we will do anything for you, and that included Vincent," Izzy said.

That's what I'm afraid of.

"Alyssa?" Vincent opened his eyes and smiled.

"Good morning sleeping beauty," Jacob laughed.

"Fuck you, Jacob," Vincent laughed softly. "I'm fine, don't worry about me," Vincent then looked at Izzy. "It's nice to see you again, Isabella,"

"Hi, Vincent. I know we have been distant, but I'm happy you're alive," Izzy smiled. "I'm sorry, Vincent,"

"Water under the bridge. How are my parents?" Vincent said. "Are my mom and dad okay?"

"We'll be outside and tell the nurse you are awake," Jacob said, dragging Izzy out.

Vincent's face grew pale. "Its bad, isn't it?" I nodded at his words.

"I'm so sorry Vincent, but your father didn't make it," I said.

Vincent's eyes became puffy with tears, and I embraced him. He starts crying uncontrollably in my arms.
