Chapter 125
Chapter 0125
The following afternoon, after several meetings with our potential new client, Logan and I returned to the hotel room. I had just under an hour to pack and move and then get ready for dinner with the new clients. Logan was walking back and forth between the kitchen and the bedroom, looking over at me each time he passed by me on the couch. I zipped up my repacked suitcase on his last pass through, and he paused
in front of me.
“So uh… meet you downstairs around 5?” He asked.
“Yeah, I will meet you down there.” I stood and pulled the handle of the suitcase up. 2
He muttered something that sounded like, “You don’t have to go.” But it was so quiet I couldn’t be sure. “What was that?” I asked.
1 said I’ll see you soon,” he gave me a half smile then retreated to his bedroom.
1 headed down to the lobby around 4:45. Ralph and Logan were both there when I arrived. Logan looked relieved to see me. Ralph was nice enough, but he never said much. I imagined Logan was happy to have someone around that he could have a conversation with.
“You look great,” Logan said.
I looked down at my dress. It was j
a simple sleeveless black dress that went to the knees, paired with some black flats. I wasn’t sure how far we would be walking and I did not want to risk doing that in heels. I had a sweater draped over one of my arms just in case.
“Thank you,” I smiled at him. “You do too.” That was an understatement. He always looked incredible.
He smiled. “Shall we?”
He gestured towards the door and I followed him and Ralph out to the sidewalk.
1 believe it is just a few doors down from here,” Logan said.
He turned left and led us a couple buildings over. He looked at the names on the door when we arrived. “Ah, yes, here it is! Very top floor,” he announced.
I looked up. I was standing too close to the building, so I backed up as far as I could on the sidewalk and looked up. I wasn’t sure how many stories the building was, but it was quite high.
I gulped. I was not a fan of heights. I hoped to be sat as far away from a window as possible.
Logan looked at me and gave me a concerned look. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” I tried to switch my face from terrified to nonchalant. “Just…not a huge fan of heights is all.”
“Here,” he offered his arm to me. “I’ve got you.”
I hesitated. I was worried it would make things even harder on me, but I really did need the comfort. Besides, it was just our arms, this was incredibly innocent. I gingerly linked my arm in his. He patted my hand and smiled at me. My heart fluttered. God. A handsome man that is also a gentleman is the height of hotness.

He held open the door and we walked through, Ralph close behind. I looked around. The building was surprisingly dark, like it was closed for the day. There was not another soul in sight.
Logan looked around, then walked us over to a nearby elevator and pushed the “up” button. It felt like it took forever to get to us. Once I stepped into it, I looked at the buttons for the floors. There were 48 of them altogether.
Logan pushed the button for the 48th floor and the doors closed, I closed my eyes and tightened my grip on Logan’s arm as the elevator wooshed its way to the top.
Finally, we stopped and the doors opened. I wasn’t sure which would be worse: leaving the elevator or staying in it. All I could think about was how far up in the air we were and how we were goners should anything go astray with the building itself.
Logan looked around. “Do you see any sort of directory?”
were to
I looked around carefully, trying to avoid any accidental glances out of the glass windows that were the left of the elevator. “I don’t,” I said.
“Uh, boss?” Ralph said.
I hadn’t realized it, but Ralph had stepped away from us and was pointed to a sign on a glass door he found to our right.
“What does it say?” Logan said. He must’ve sensed I was not too keen on moving away from where I stood just outside the elevator.
“Looks like the restaurant isn’t here anymore, it’s moved next door,” Ralph said, reading from the paper.
My eyes grew wide. “They couldn’t put that downstairs?” I said, my voice strained..
“No big deal,” Logan said, squeezing my hand. “Maybe it’ll be on a lower floor in the next one.
Logan turned and pushed the down button on the elevator.
“Don’t worry,” he leaned in and whispered to me. “We’ll be back on the ground in no time.”
I wanted to cry, he was being so sweet about my silly fear. “Okay,” was all I could manage to say, however.
The elevator doors opened and we stepped inside. Ralph jogged back to join us, then turned back. “Oh, miss! Your sweater!”
“Oh!” I cried, too nervous to leave Logan’s side..
The doors began to close.
“Hurry Ralph!” Logan called out.
Ralph went back, bent down to pick the sweater up, and that was the last we saw of him before the doors closed without him.
“Ah, well,” Logan said, slightly nervous. “We’ll just meet up with him at the bottom.”
just nodded. The elevator seemed to be moving faster than it was going up, and all I could picture was it picking up speed until we crashed to our deaths. I had a death grip on Logan’s arm and held my eyes tightly closed.

“Hey,” Logan gave a small laugh. “You’re okay. We’ll be on the first floor in no time.”
“Yeah, after this thing careens out of control,” I said.
Suddenly, the elevator slowed and came to a complete stop. I breathed a sigh of relief and opened my
eyes.
Logan looked at me nervously. “Okay, don’t panic. But I think we’re stuck.”
“What!” I looked up at the sign that said what floor we were on. 28. Oh my god. We still had so many floors to go.
I looked at the buttons and pressed the “door open” one over and over. It didn’t work.
“Woah, hey, okay, we’ll get out of here. Let me try the emergency options,” Logan said. He began looking at the emergency phone and buttons and was studying them.
I untangled myself from his arm and sat in the corner of the elevator. I bent my knees and rested and arms on them. I closed my eyes and forced myself to take slow, deep breaths.

“Uh…no one’s answering the emergency phone,” he said. “Let me try my cell.” He paused, then: “Ah, nope. No signal.” 1
“Oh my god,” I groaned. I looked up at him, and immediately wished I hadn’t. He had a slightly panicked.
look on his face..
“Yeah we might be here awhile.“1
