Chapter 104
Chapter 0104
Needless to say, I didn’t sleep at all Sunday night.
Even with a whole weekend to recover from the embarrassment that was Friday night at Chickadee’s, I still felt way too nervous to face Logan that day.
I stared into my closet. Basically all of my clothes were on the conservative side, but I felt like I would not be able to wear enough clothing today. I’d still feel like Logan would still be able to see right through them.
I opted for a pantsuit and put on my biggest pair of granny panties underneath. I layered up on top with my most padded bra, a camisole, a blouse, then the jacket that went with the pants. I usually left the buttons undone when I wore that jacket, but today I completely buttoned it up. I pulled my hair into a bun and opted for glasses over contacts I was hoping to be as unnoticeable as humanly possible.
Once I had applied just a little bit of foundation and mascara, I took a look at myself in the mirror. I felt like that was as well as I could do to achieve my goal of being as covered up and bland as possible. I grabbed a scarf and stuffed it into my purse
I rushed out down the stairs and out the door, eager to get out without seeing my family. Although thankfully they had taken to giving me the silent treatment after we fought about Logan. I also noticed Natalie had been slumping around the house, looking incredibly depressed. It had actually become quite pleasant living there the last week. But still, I didn’t want to take any chances on being interacted with I made it out without a hitch
Once I got to work, I sat in my car, waiting for Maria to arrive. I pulled the scarf out of my purse and tied it around my head like a bandana. When Maria finally pulled up, I put my sunglasses on, got out of my car, and ran over to her with my head down
“Uh, are we going under cover today?” She asked, her eyes on my head scarf.
I pulled it off self–consciously. “I was trying to hide as much as possible from Logan,” I said sheepishly.
“I think that will be a little difficult considering you work directly underneath him,” she said. “Is this about Friday?”
“Yeah, Maria, it is, because some people who shall remain nameless insisted I go out dressed like a prostitute. And now, my boss has seen allll of this,” I said, waving my arms in front of my chest and butt.
She smirked. “Oh, he sure saw it alright. He couldn’t keep his eyes off of it.”
I blushed. “Really?” I asked, intrigued. Then I shook my head. “No, don’t answer that. I can’t think of that. I need to push it from my mind so I can actually act normal today and not wonder if he’s seeing right through my clothes every time he looks at me.”
“Okay, okay.” Maria threw her hands up in defense. “I’m just letting you know, he did not seem to mind what he saw.”
I plugged my ears with my index fingers. “Nope, can’t hear you.”
She shook her head at me as we walked to the elevators. When we got there, another person was also waiting for the elevators. My stomach dropped to the floor when I realized who it was:

Before I could sneak away unnoticed, he turned and saw us. He jumped a little.
“Oh! Uh… Maria, Hazel, good morning,” he said. Was it my imagination or were his ears turning pink? Maria puffed out her chest and said in a low seductive voice, “Good morning.”
I elbowed her. “Good morning, sir.”
He gave us a small nod and turned back to face the elevator, I gave Maria an “I can’t believe you” look, and she just shrugged at me.
The elevator finally arrived. Logan motioned for us to go in before him, then he entered behind us and pushed the button for our floor.
I had never taken a quieter, more tense elevator ride in my life. I practically ran out of it once it finally reached our floor. I didn’t even say goodbye to Maria, I just booked it to my desk, head down. I pulled off my sunglasses and threw them and my scarf back into my purse. I took a deep breath. Maybe that would be the worst of it. Maybe the rest of the day would be more normal. I turned on my computer.
Logan arrived in front of my desk a few minutes later. He paused in front of it, then turned to face me. “Do you mind. um. Could we talk in my office for a moment?”
So, no. The elevator ride would not be the worst of it. I stood, my legs shaky. “Sure.”
I followed him into his office. He waited until I was inside then closed the door.
“I just wanted to check in with you, see how you’re doing,” he said as he moved to sit on the front corner of his desk.
“Oh,” I said.
“How is the newlywed? Is Chance treating you well?”
“He is,” I said, forcing a smile.
He studied my face, then sighed. “Come on, Haze,” he said, dropping the professional facade. “Explain this to me, because I don’t understand how you went from kis…what we did that night in the hospital to marrying a drunk idiot that we had to practically drag out of the parking garage just a few days later?”
I was stunned at his candor on the subject. I certainly couldn’t tell him that I had made the whole thing up, especially since we clearly weren’t back to normal yet. I thought quickly.
“Well…” I said, stalling. “Who really knows how these things come about, huh?” et out a small nervous laugh. He did not look amused. He just continued to stare at me.
I sighed, and thought back to when Chance had first proposed to Natalie, essentially putting an end to what we had. I remembered what I wished would happen from there.
“Okay. Chance came over, and he apologized for everything he’d done to me. He told me that ending things with me had been a huge mistake, and that he’d missed me terribly ever since. He said he couldn’t imagine going one more day without me, and that if I would do him the honor of marrying him, he would spend every day of the rest of his life making it up to me and showing me just how much he loves me.”
I started to get teary–eyed, I just had to hope they looked like happy tears and not sad, lonely tears. Logan handed me a tissue. I dabbed my eyes and continued.

“I mean, who can say no to that? So we went to the courthouse and got married. He’s promised me the house, and the kids, and the life that I’ve dreamed of for so long.” My heart was sinking with every word. I didn’t want that stuff with Chance anymore, but I did want it with someone. The tears in my eyes began to fall down my cheek.
Logan didn’t say anything. He nodded and handed me another tissue. After I dried my eyes, he stood and placed his hands on my shoulders.
“You should text Dylan. He deserves some sort of explanation, too.”
