The Dimensional Rift

Rose was standing in front of a door that had two knobs. On one side was a blue and green planet Earth with lots of white clouds on the nob. On the other side, the knob was a tan colored moon that looked a lot like Earth might look if it had no water or life. As Rose reached out to grab one of the knobs the door seemed to fold in half before disappearing leaving behind two worlds side by side, on the right was a healthy blue and green planet Earth with white clouds. On the left was a wasteland of nearly all desert and black oceans that looked as though they were made from thick crude oil.

Rose stepped through the door to try and go to the healthy planet but she found herself on the waist land. As she looked around she could see skeletons of humans, animals and Martians alike scattered around the ground.

“This is the future of humanity.” A male voice called out from all around her.

“What can be done to stop this?” Rose called back as she turned trying to find the source of the voice.

“You can stop this future if you want.” The voice replied.

“But how? I do not know what to do.” Rose said tears forming in her eyes as she spoke.

“But you do know how. The power inside has told you already.” The voiced said fading into nothing with the last few words it spoke.

Rose jumped from her bed scaring Meagan off of the other side as she did.

“What the hell?” Meagan said standing rubbing her head since she hit it on the edge of the nightstand when she fell.

“You have to teach my class today,” Rose said as she grabbed some clothes to put on.

“But I am not a teacher,” Meagan said sitting on the edge of the bed.

“You have already learned the lesson you will be teaching; you will be fine,” Rose said as she rushed out the door leaving Meagan sitting there on the bed alone.

Mars had come a long way over the last ten years. They had started mining minerals and developing new technologies as well as advancing their ability to grow food and animals. Rose’s family was now ten children while James’s family was up to 14.

Meagan, Elizabeth’s daughter had found a girl she liked and was also having children. Some of them were human like her others were Martian-like her wife. Albert and Elizabeth even had 2 more children here on Mars.

As Rose walked she thought about all of this as well as what the dream meant. She knew that the dream came from something or someone other than her, but who and why her? She did not know the answers but she needed to call an emergency meeting of the council to try and fix Earth before it was too late.

The council gathered with sounds of decent throughout. They all had been woken from their sleep by Rose standing over them calling them to come to the meeting.

“We have an issue that needs to be addressed now,” Rose said once the members had all taken their seats.

“And what is so important that it could not wait until morning at least?” A member named David asked.

“Earth,” Rose said to the council seated around her.

“Earth has been there for more than 4 billion years it will be there for at least another 4 billion years.” A council member named Susan said.

“True but will it support life in the future?” Rose asked as they looked back staring wildly at her. “Tonight I had something come to me and ask for my help in repairing the Earth so it would not die,” Rose told them.

“Who or what was it that came to you?” Jasmine asked.

“I do not know for sure but if we do not act the Earth will die and we will be responsible for letting it happen,” Rose said looking around at the blinking eyes of the council. “I know how to fix the problem that is killing the Earth but I need people to help with the human issue as well.”

“How do we fix what is killing the Earth?” Sylvester asked Nancy, another member of the council.

“We have a tunnel to the center of Mars that will be facing Earth in the next few days. I will gather all the nuclear fallout, waste, and warheads that remain on Earth and drop them into the tunnel. Effectively doing two things, first will be to get rid of the stuff from the surface of the Earth, the second will cause Mars own core to melt and spin freely like it once did.” Rose said.

“But that might kill you,” Linda said as she stood to protest the plan.

“I am the only one capable of moving that much stuff all at once. We have no choice.” Rose answered

The council put it to a vote and decided since Earth had been their home before Mars they owed it to the planet to do everything they could. So the announcement went out to the people who suddenly jumped on board as well. Rose spent the next few days gathering the nuclear material from the earth and directing it to the tunnel to the core of Mars. But for it to work right Rose knew she had to stand at the opening of the tunnel.

Once all the nuclear material was off of Earth teams departed to help with the other parts of the cleanup, they had to help plant new trees and organize the humans into more than animals. They found that there were several places that did not get hit by the fallout; Most of South America, the southern tip of Africa, southeastern Asia, Australia, and Japan along with most of the Southern Ocean islands.

Many of the humans in these places had reverted to a time before monetary systems and some were keeping records of Earth’s history. Some had kept the monetary system with new forms of currency and ways of the border.

Over the next several years Mars helped Earths inhabitants to recover from the ‘nuclear fallout’ period and rejoin the age of advancement. Rose had not been seen since she pulled all the nuclear material from Earth, though several people say they had seen her.

Elizabeth says that Rose is still alive trapped in a time bubble like she was. She has made several trips to the tunnel to try and find Rose but is always forced back by the heat. She swears to never give up trying to reach Rose by any means necessary.

Mars’s gravity has doubled since the core melted and started turning again. The atmosphere has thickened and started retaining moisture. The first rains fell after about two years, and after nearly ten years there were several small lakes forming trying to become oceans.

Earth and Mars share their technologies with each other and travel to the stars is a regular occurrence. Sarah never returned home but several of her kind spends much of their time on both Earth and Mars, as do the Zicarthon’s and Eldan’s in an attempt to help further their knowledge.

Elizabeth and her daughter Meagan both decided to stay on Mars since they too can start walking the streets without pressure suits. The rest of Elizabeth’s children returned to Earth to help rebuild and repopulate it. Meagan’s oldest human children want to go and live on Earth when they are old enough as well.

I know most of you think Rose must be dead, but don’t worry she will be back when she is needed again.
