The Darwin Chronicles, Book One: The Mountain Ranges

Chapter 10

Emmett slid down the bench to where Amy was sitting, eating alone.

"Hi, Amy."

"Hello, Emmett," She said, not looking up to see who was talking to her.

"This is going to sound really awkward, but-um-" He swallowed hard, then continued. "I think I'm in love with you."

Her eyes snapped up to his. "What?"

"It's not like that!" Emmett said hastily. "I asked my dad about it last night. He told me there's this thing where sometimes new Legends feels attracted to the person who gave them energy."

"Oh," Amy smirked. "You're suffering from Legend's Lovesickness. Don't worry about it. It should go away quickly. It's pretty rare. I'm happy I didn't get it. Anyways, the person who gets the energy is called the Receiver, if it makes it easier to put the process into words. Capitol 'R'. The person who gives it to them is called the Giver. Capitol 'G'. I'm your Giver. You're my third Receiver. The bond between the Giver and Receiver lasts forever, like a mentor and an apprentice. The actual connection between them as the Giver sends the Receiver energy is called Lanqueum, which is Latin for 'net'."

"That does it easier," Emmett admitted. "But how do you get rid of Legend's Lovesickness?"

"You don't. It sticks around for a random number of days, then gradually disappears."

"So-you don't mind?"

"No. It's not your fault. Good luck, though." She smirked at him again and stood up to put her tray away.
