The Conquest of Mytheyr

Chapter 34

“Hey Vath, what’s up? You’re quieter than usual.” asked Travis, one of the Dragonkin that had befriended Vath.

“What?” Vath said, looking up. “Oh. Sorry, I was thinking.”

“I thought I smelled smoke.” Travis teased. “Has Silva shown you her sketchbook recently?”

“Not since she showed me the first time. Why?”

“That’s good. I wouldn’t want her to scare you away.” Travis winked.

“Scare me away from what?” Vath scoffed.

“Don’t worry about it. I really came to tell you that it’s going down tomorrow.”

“The battle, you mean? Why tomorrow? I thought you… we… were waiting on a few more towns.”

“The Dragonkin fight best in the rain.” Travis said, jerking his thumb up towards the gray sky. “Notice how it’s been overcast for a while? This place doesn’t usually have big rainstorms, but the clouds have been bottling up for a while. It’s gonna dump all that water tomorrow, so we’d better be ready.”

“How do you even know that?” Vath said, shaking his head. He ended up asking that question a lot.

“The elements always help us out. They won’t do it as much here as they do in Irideth, but that rain should be all we need.”

“Of course.” Vath had learned by now that pretty much everything that came out of the Dragonkins’ mouths was unbelievable and one hundred percent true. “Can I ask why you fight better in the rain?”

Travis laughed and shrugged.

“I dunno. Maybe cause we don’t have to use our own magical energy, we can just draw it from the water. Also, it gives our elemental masters something to manipulate. What’ll really make us fight better is the fact that there’s bout twenty of us. The Queen especially, though. I guess you’ll get a chance to see us really fight soon enough.”

“I’ll look forward to that.” Vath said. “Hey, uh…”

“Yeeaah?”

“Morgan said that I was some kind of-”

“Lemme stop you there.” Travis held his hand up. “You should talk to the Queen or Ser Raven about that.”

“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

“I have a good idea. I’m a Dragon Elf too, you know. I know the things that happen during a mission slash quest. But this is their mission, and they’ll know more about it that I do. I’m just here to fight a battle. But anything else, and I’ll be glad to help you.”

Vath didn’t respond. After a minute of standing by expectantly, Travis left and gave Vath his space. Vath was worried about what had been said to him before, about him being a prophesied hero. What was he supposed to do? What could he do that Morgan couldn’t, or wouldn’t? All he had were two knives; the one he got back from the palace, the other he shamelessly stole from Asa. He had no magic, no idea what this Canteior thing did for him. No idea what kind of powers it gave, or how to control it. Last time he was in the same room as Semele, he was completely overwhelmed.

Maybe you have another purpose. Vath was surprised at his thought. It seemed odd, out of place. But still, it made sense. Maybe whatever Morgan was talking about had nothing to do with Semele… but then… what would it be?
