The Carnival at Moonbright

Chapter Questions and Theories

Gisela finished placing her memories into the memory orb and stood up. The slight vertigo she felt kept her from moving away quickly but seeing Archmage Orin over by the fireplace gave her determination to make it over there. Hovering slightly, she moved past Rhokhishi, who stood up to take her spot in the chair, and she flew over to the resting chair next to the Archmage.

“Archmage Orin, could I ask a few personal questions?”

“Of course. What questions could this old elf answer for a fairy tonight?”

“It’s a long story, really… but I was wondering, can someone be brought back once they’ve died?”

“You saw the magic that was used to bring back Master Elysium. Was that not enough of an answer, or are the circumstances different?”

“They’re quite different, sir,” Gisela replied, holding her greatsword by the hilt. “My friend died a few years ago. She was buried south of here, near Exeter?”

“Ah… I see. Something like that is quite different, indeed. While I won’t say it’s impossible, not many mages could pull off something like that. I have only met one person who could do a true resurrection, something with that skill, but it is possible for someone who has mastered necromancy to do.”

“What… What makes it so challenging? Is it materials or money related?”

“No, nothing like that. The materials needed for a resurrection are expensive, but a lot of it has to do with time and the person who passed away. Bringing someone who just pierced the veil beyond is usually easy. Most clerics and mages have learned that art. When it comes to a resurrection, in which the person has been gone for a longer period, it is much more difficult to find them. Some druidic people tell stories of those who have done this because of their connection to nature, but I only knew one wizard with that power, and that was many years ago.”

“So, if I found someone who could do it, it would be possible?”

“Theoretically, yes. The other issue is the person who passed. If their soul does not want to return to the mortal realm, the material plane, so to speak, then no power will be able to do that.”

“Oh… Well, I’m sure she’d want to come back. We had tons of fun together!”

“I… I’m sure you did, my fairy friend.” Orin said, taking two fingers and patting her shoulder lightly.

“Orin, sir. We have finished now.” Leaf announced. Orin gave Gisela a soft smile, then walked over to the table.

So, it is possible! Can you imagine if I was able to bring you back?

She flew back over to the table as everyone else found a seat and sat down.

It sounds like it’ll be a lot of work, though…

That’s okay. I can do this. I’m sure I can find someone.

Gisela gripped the pommel of her weapon excitedly.

I can do this!
