Chapter A Push of Jealousy
“The ocean is an object of no small terror.”
-Edmund Burke
“If I can’t have you, then no one else will.”
Aileen felt a shiver going down her spine as she gazed in the dark pits of Alastor’s eyes. They shined with raw honesty and determination. The man in front of her was not playing silly games anymore but had a specific purpose. He would either make her his or no one else would be able to have her, whatever that meant.
Her emerald eyes filled with tears as she registered the whole situation she had found herself in and the severity of it. She was alone in the presence of a man that was obsessed with her, without anyone else knowing her whereabouts. Plus, she was standing at the edge of a sharp cliff with no other route of escape than passing the mad man standing in front of her.
Could it get any worse?
“Please, let me go”, she whispered as fear clouded all her senses.
She began to struggle in his tight grip, turning her body around in an attempt to free herself from the monster in front of her. If she could just get him to let go of her forearm, she would be free to run through the flowery meadows and in the safety of the crowded village.
“Let me go!”
This time she screamed as everything became more real than before. Tears fell from her emerald eyes and her breathing turned heavy from all her fruitless attempts to find her freedom again. His grip was strong and bruising like a grip made out of the toughest steel. It was impossible for the petite woman to match his strength.
“Accept the fact that you’re mine and then I’ll let you go.”
He hissed in her ear frustrated with all her struggles.
“Never!“, Aileen screamed in his face.
His eyes narrowed at her as fury began to fill his whole being. Why couldn’t she be an obedient good little girl for him?
“I’ll never be yours!”
Aileen never ceased her struggles, even though her body was becoming extremely tired and her energy was leaving her.
“Very well then”, Alastor decided.
He gripped her arm even tighter than before and began to drag her towards the edge of the high cliff. Aileen realizing his intentions became paralyzed with fear, not believing what was actually happening to her right now.
She began to scratch his hands drawing blood with her nails and kicking him with her short legs in an attempt to hit him where the sun doesn’t shine. All her attempts though seemed to have no results at all as the edge of the cliff came closer and closer.
He wouldn’t actually throw her from a cliff, because she didn’t accept him as her lover?
He couldn’t possibly be so set to not taking “no” for an answer.
No means no.
Aileen tried to dig her feet into the ground as an attempt to stop their way, almost falling to her knees in the process. However, he dragged her unwilling body to the edge no matter what she did to stop him.
She screamed her throat out, hoping –begging- that someone would be passing by and save her from this terrible nightmare. She prayed to God that some miracle would happen and she will wake up in her comfortable bed, wondering about the strange dream she had.
But life is cruel and doesn’t make favors for anyone. We always make plans having in mind that everything is going to be alright, but then they are all ruined by things that we didn’t expect. I guess that’s what makes our lives interesting. The fact that we never know what happens next.
She gripped his shoulders tightly as he brought her body forth, almost pushing her off the huge cliff. Aileen saw a pair of lips coming closer to her mouth, but she had no intention of giving her first kiss–and probably the last one considering the situation she was in- to her tormentor and possibly murderer.
She turned her head to the side just in time and his disgusting lips found her cheek instead of her mouth, which was wet from all the tears that had already fallen from her emerald eyes.
“Goodbye, Aileen Smith.”
That was the last thing he whispered to her ear before he pushed her with all the strength he could master from the side of the cliff, towards the dark abyss full of rocks that were right below it.
And before the young woman could register what was happening to her, she felt the wind surrounding her whole form as Alastor’s form became smaller and smaller as he stood above the cliff and watched her fall into her certain death.
The coward couldn’t even wait to see if the job was complete. If the girl he claimed to love reached the angry waters bellow her and drowned in the ocean. He immediately started making his way slowly back to the village, not sparing her falling form a second glance.
Aileen couldn’t believe what he just did...She couldn’t believe that he had actually decided to push her off a cliff because she had rejected him. Shouting and screaming, perhaps a threat or two, she had expected out of him, but she had never thought that he would be capable of murder.
After all, humans are the worst monsters of them all, she thought.
Her flaming locks were everywhere, whipping in the wind as she fell down the high cliff. Her hands were stretched in front of her like they were trying to stop her fast fall by grasping on something, anything. Of course, there was nothing they could hold onto.
Her white dress was flaring around her mixing with her hair, making her seem like an angel who was falling down from heaven. She was freely flying towards her certain death and there was nothing she could do to save herself from the situation she was currently in.
Honestly, she was utterly terrified. In the beginning, she hadn’t realized what had happened. Then, as she saw the cliffs become bigger and bigger, she finally understood. Her breathing was trapped in her lungs as she realized that this would be the way she would die. Thrown from the edge of a cliff to the dark abyss of the angry sea. Couldn’t say she had expected it.
She began to tremble from the horror she was living. She wanted to wake up from this horrific nightmare, but she wasn’t dreaming. Reality had brought the horrible dream alive and she had to bear with the consequences of this fact.
Tears began to leave her emerald eyes as she was lead to her undeniable utter doom. She closed them tightly as she almost reached the deep salty water. If she couldn’t see them, perhaps she wouldn’t feel anything or even better, reality would magically stop.
She would die before she had done everything that she wanted. She wanted to spend more time with her amazing friends, making jokes, and talking with one another. She wanted to find someone worthy of falling in love with and dreamy life with him. She wanted to make her own little family with cute kids running all over the household.
She wanted to know how it feels like to love and be loved back. How it is to return home to someone waiting for you instead of finding it empty. She even wanted to find out what had happened to her father, although he had left her to feed off by herself when she needed him the most. She wanted to know how he died or forgive and forget if he was still alive. She wanted him back in her life.
But she guessed that now she had no other choice, but to close her eyes and pray that everything would stop. Her time was almost up- there weren’t any seconds left for her to dream any longer. She didn’t know what to do, laugh at the whole situation or scream her lungs out, knowing that no one would save her. It seemed pointless to do so, spend her last moments screaming for no one to hear her, but what else could she do?
“Let it be painless”, was the only thought she had just as she hit the surface of the water.
Her back hurt terribly from the harsh impact and she opened her mouth in a silent scream of agony that nobody could hear. Her mouth filled immediately with salty water making her lose the little oxygen she had.
She quickly moved her hands and legs, trying to swim towards the surface of the water -hoping for a breath of air. When she finally managed to break up, she took greedily a big breath of much-needed oxygen and began coughing the water that she had swallowed.
Thank goodness that Aileen knew how to swim or else she would surely be already in the bottom of the sea. She smiled momentarily as she looked at the sharp rocks that surrounded her. At least, she was lucky enough not to crash upon them as she fell down from such a height. She would surely be dead if she had hit one of them on her way down.
She turned around trying to search the coast in order to find the closest beach. She would swim carefully through the sharp underwater rocks and would get herself to the safety of the dry land. Perhaps, she could swim to her own safe haven -her favorite quiet beach, and from there she could easily find the rocky stairway and make her way back to the village.
“That sounds like a plan”, she thought to herself.
She couldn’t wait to return to the warmth of her house. She would exchange her wet white dress for her comfortable pajamas and she would not come out for days. He wouldn’t be able to hurt her in her own home. She would inform Aide and Petra about Alastor’s horrific actions and they would discuss what she will have to do next. He had gone too far this time and she couldn’t just stand by and do absolutely nothing in front of his awful actions.
They would probably tell her to go to the police and tell them everything, so he finally left her alone and got what he deserved. However, she wasn’t so sure that this was a good idea since his father was the mayor of their village and a very loved man among the villagers. They wouldn’t believe her over the mayor’s son, she was sure of it. They’ll think that she had finally gotten mad from all her loneliness and she just wanted their attention. She will have to be clever and handle the whole situation correctly.
However, just as Aileen turned around thinking about all those things, a great wave forced her quickly under the water. She swam frantically to the surface again as she had not taken a breath before going underwater. Just when she broke up for a second time, another wave stronger than the one before hit her full force, sending her straight to a sharp rock that was behind her.
Her head felt lightheaded as it hit harshly the rock behind her. Her ribs were bruised as they collided on it with great force. She couldn’t move her legs and arms anymore as much as she wanted to. The pain was too much for her to do anything else than let the water’s force do with her whatever it pleased it.
She felt herself sinking slowly towards the depths of the ocean. A sense of anguish, more so than pain had taken rule of her heart, as her flaming hair flared in the sea waters. Her body had no more energy and the surface seemed way too far away for her to swim. She just watched the moonlight’s rays as they appeared from above the surface while she was moving faster and faster towards her wet grave to the bottom of the sea.
Tears fell from her emerald eyes as she was completely surrounded by water. They left her beautiful eyes like small pearls and became one with the rest of the ocean. They became part of it as she would become too in just a few moments.
“So, this is the end”, she thought to herself.
Her chest began to burn unceasingly from the lack of air as she was led deeper into the dark ocean. She opened her mouth to breath when everything became too much, only for saltwater to fill her opened mouth and her constricting lungs.
Now, she was drifting, drifting, drifting down through a bed of gently swaying strands of seaweed that were at the rocky bottom of the ocean. As her body touched down on the ocean floor, she exhaled her final breath. Fascinating streams of bubbles headed back to the surface from where she came from.
As her head began to lay down to the bottom, her vision started to become dark. She could still see the stray bright rays of the moon touching the water’s surface that was miles away from her.
“Beautiful”, she thought as she watched from afar.
Just as she was ready to close her eyes forever, something caught her attention. A black figure was approaching her fast as she laid almost dead in the abyss of the ocean. She couldn’t put her finger to exactly what it was and right now she frankly didn’t care.
The last thing she saw before the world darkened completely around her and all her senses disappeared, was a glowing pair of majestic, inhuman eyes coming near her.
Two blue shinning gems that stood out in the darkness.
