Chapter 83
Grayson POV
I stared at my wife as she glanced at me uncertainly. "Did I mishear you or did you just say you were an investor in Johnathon's law firm?" I asked quietly.
She flushed, her red cheeks making her look even guiltier "It's not what you think Grayson. When Johnathon first started out, he needed a big cash flow to commandeer the building and bring it up to standard, not to mention all the equipment and employees he needed to hire. He was looking for people to invest in his law firm or become partners and I..." she trailed off, glancing away from me.
"You invested a large amount of cash so he could build his law firm."
It wasn't a question. Flair had given her husband the money to start up his own firm and chase his dreams, which was so like her. She was generous to a fault. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair, feeling disgruntled even though I knew it wasn't fair to feel that way. "Why are you still putting money into his company?" I asked evenly.
"I haven't had a chance to start the legal procedure of pulling out of the firm and I guess part of me feels guilty if I do."
"Flair you don't owe him any loyalty now. He's married to Charlotte who can more than afford to prop up his law firm" I argued as she looked at me miserably "Or are you just having trouble letting go of something that is still important to you?"
She blinked, looking stunned by the question. "That's not fair Grayson," she said, walking out of the kitchen as I followed her "and it's not important to me, not anymore. I didn't want her to have anything tying her to Johnathon anymore. "Does Johnathon know you invested? Can he trace it back to you?"
She shook her head "he thinks it came from a foreign investor. I'll start the legal process tomorrow" she promised me as I began to relax slightly "I swear, it's just not something that's been at the front of my mind with us getting married and other things" she said hesitantly.
I sat down and reached for her hand "I'm sorry" I apologized gruffly "I should have let you explain before jumping on you like this. I was a little surprised that's all and not expecting to see Rachel there either" I added thoughtfully.
Flair gave a tremulous smile "She needed advice on something. Did you know that Timoty has asked her to move in with him?" she asked me.
I was stunned. Timothy hadn't said a word about it in the office. "No" I exhaled "but I knew the relationship was going well. I'm happy for him, for them" I corrected myself, pleased for the man who had been a loyal friend to me all this time "What did she want advice about?"
"Oh not much, just girl talk," Flair said nonchalantly "Um did you take care of the photos and that situation?" she added.
I nodded smoothly "Let's just say that the person I believe to be responsible for trying to break us up has been given a warning."
She looked satisfied with that answer and visibly relaxed some more. I gently rubbed small circles on the top of her hand. "I heard that some of Johnathon's clients have gone over to your firm," she said hesitantly "Is that true?" she asked.
I chuckled "I had a few come into the office today" I confirmed "Charlotte's public spat on television was enough to convince them that Johnathon was not the person they wanted dealing with their private affairs. I know he's your ex-husband Flair, but his public image has already been dealt a terrible blow thanks to Charlotte. You might be doing yourself a favor by pulling your investment from his firm, if this continues, his firm is likely to continue downsizing unless Charlotte keeps sinking a lot of money into it and she's as selfish as they come" I said with a shrug.
"It's a shame" Flair uttered and then saw the look on my face and hastened to explain what she meant "Not that, but that another person's actions can reflect on you."
"Well to be fair, it's common knowledge that you are my wife now, and should you do something as horrible in public, I'm certain that my clients would view me as unfavorable to them. I guess I'm lucky that you are such a gracious and kind woman in real life as you are at home" I teased.
She laughed and her smile lit up her face. I inhaled sharply. All my anger faded with that one smile of hers. I let go of her hand and reached for my briefcase, Flair looking confusedly at me. I had come home to give her something, something which I hoped would have special meaning to her. I opened the briefcase and slowly withdrew the jewelry box from inside, placing it on Flair's knee as she eyed me with sparkling eyes.
"Grayson, you shouldn't have," she said delightedly, as I placed the briefcase on the floor "It's really too much" she tried to protest.
"Open it," I said quietly.
She glanced at me and then indulgently picked up the box, holding it lightly in one hand. I could feel anticipation flooding through me. She slowly flicked the lid to the box open and gazed down at the locket with an expression of pure excitement.
"I got it to match the ring," I told her softly "It wasn't easy to find either but it was worth it, don't you think?" I asked, slowly pulling out the necklace as she looked at me with shining and glistening eyes.
It was a black diamond set in the middle of a vintage oval pendant, surrounded by white diamonds. "It must have cost a fortune Grayson" Flair protested.
"It's my money to spend," I said evenly as she put her hair up on top of her head and exposed her neck to me "and I wanted to get this for you. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get it" I told her.
I delicately placed the necklace around her neck and did up the small clasp, allowing it to slip through my fingers. The pendant rested just below the hollow of her throat or collarbone and she touched it, glancing down at her ring with her face glowing. She turned around and put her arms around me, hugging me with enthusiasm.
"It's beautiful Grayson, I love it" she exclaimed "But it's too much" she added, stepping back and touching it "I mean, the cost."
"The cost was worth it," I said honestly as she glanced down at the necklace "Just seeing that expression on your face makes it worth it."
She practically glowed. "I'm never going to take it off" she whispered and I chuckled.
"Well you might not want to wear it to yoga class" I teased and she giggled "But it's insured if that helps" I added smugly.
Tears came to her eyes "I can't believe you got this for me" she whispered, and I almost choked as a single tear trailed down her cheek.
"Hey, I didn't mean to upset you" I soothed, reaching out and gathering the tear on my finger in shock "I wanted to make you happy" I added quietly.
"You have" she choked out "so much and it's so hard to find the words to tell you because..." she trailed off, a helpless look on her face.
"Maybe the words don't have to be said" I murmured, holding her to me, my hand stroking her hair "Sometimes we can read between the lines."
She sniffed. "I'm sorry that I didn't get pregnant this time, but we can try again Grayson, I just need a few days and..."
"You think I'm worried about that?" I growled, stepping back and looking at her more closely "It's not your fault you didn't get pregnant. Flair, that's the least of my worries right now" I insisted.
She looked unconvinced. I sighed. "Flair I..." I trailed off as there was a pounding at the door, that sounded frantic and almost desperate in nature.
"Grayson sir. are you in there?"
"Timothy?" I opened the door, shocked "What are you doing here?"
He gulped "You haven't been answering your phone," he said as I looked at my pocket where my cell phone was nestled, "I've called you several times, it's your grandfather," he said breathing heavily "he's had a heart attack. He's in the hospital," he said and I felt like my heart was thumping loudly in my chest, my body feeling like it was underwater as Flair came up beside me and squeezed my shoulder, a look of worry on her face.
"Grayson" she repeated as I looked at her blankly "Grayson, we need to go" she repeated, glancing at Timothy "Thank you for informing us Timothy" she added as Timothy nodded and stumbled off wheezing "Grayson, I know you're in shock, but we need to get to the hospital and determine if your grandfather is okay. Didn't you hear Timothy? He had to go in for surgery."
I was numb. The old man would live forever, or so I thought. I couldn't even begin to imagine what had brought on this heart attack. He had been so sprightly.
Flair grabbed my coat and briefcase, grabbing my hand and dragging me out, Roscoe whining as he was left inside the house alone. "Sorry Roscoe," she said apologetically as the dog went back to the couch and Flair locked the door.
I blindly followed behind my wife as she led me towards the limousine, calling the driver on her phone. "My grandfather" I mumbled as she pushed me into the backseat.
"I'm sure he'll be okay," Flair said worriedly, climbing in beside me and clutching my hand "I'm here for you Grayson. Let's go see him and do what we can to help him" she repeated as the limo began to take off, my eyes on the window without seeing anything as we made our way towards the hospital.
