The Billionaire’s Hidden Heiress

[Book 2] Chapter 95

lan

POV

I move my foot experimentally again, staring down at it in awe. This time I was able to move it up and down, not just around in a circle. I'm getting back tiny sensations, Tiny pinpricks of pain that shoot through it when I least expect it. My other foot is feeling the same. It's almost like having pins and needles, only these are much more painful. I narrow my eyes as I clutch my cell phone.

"The sensations you are describing are a very good sign, Mr Grant. We did ascertain that it was a possibility that you would be able to regain your mobility in time. It appears that your body is starting to recover and heal itself to the point of being able to walk again. We must get you back here to do some tests" the doctor stated on the phone, sounding impressed and slightly excited "This means that your injury is not permanent. Something must have caused your body to want to recover at a rapid rate. What a miraculous thing you are experiencing."

I was fairly certain that it was all Dawn's doing, I thought as I listened to the doctor some more, blindly promising to come in for more tests and then hanging up. I sat back and then glanced out the window before shrugging and wheeling myself out to the main house, where I came across Lorelai and Knox sitting together at the table with their heads bowed close together as they spoke in hushed voices.

"lan" Lorelai stammered, looking close to tears.

I examined her. I knew she blamed herself for what happened to me and I, as horrible as it was, had blamed her partially as well. It had been no one's fault, I knew that now, and I could see how tense she and Knox were as they stared at me, waiting for me to lose my temper or shout at them in anger. Instead, I gave them both a smile, making them look taken aback "Hi Lorelai" I greeted her, stunning her into silence as I nodded at her protruding baby bump "When are you due? I thought it was last week?" I added with a frown.

Lorelai glanced at Knox who looked surprised. "Well I was but this baby is coming in its own sweet time," she said sighing "But if they don't come by the end of this week they will induce me."

I raised a brow "are you going to be okay?" I asked, genuinely concerned for my sister in law.

She bit her lip, still looking on the verge of tears "I should be fine, I just want our baby to be healthy."

"I'm sorry" the words blurt out on their own, causing Lorelai and Knox to inhale sharply "I'm sorry for acting like such a brute and such a brat to you both. None of what happened was any of your fault and I shouldn't have blamed either one of you. It was immature of me and I'm sorry" I said, pinning my gaze on them.

"But lan, I don't blame you for being angry" Lorelai protested looking upset "You were shot, and you lost the use of your legs" she added thickly.

"I chose to be shot, to save Knox and I would make the same decision a hundred times over," I told my brother honestly as he blinked back tears "I only get one brother. I'm sorry."

Knox wrapped his arms around me. "Does this mean that you're going to start coming back to the company?" he asked tiredly.

It was so like Knox to instantly forgive me. I rolled my eyes at him "Somebody has to, the whole place is disorganized" I teased as he grinned at me.

"It's organized, just not in the way you like it" he defended "it's organized chaos" he added smugly while Lorelai giggled. "Either way, I think it's best if I do what I can, even if I have to do some of it from home. I'm still relying on you to help me" I told him and he nodded quickly "but I can take over some of the easier tasks."

"Sure, but what about Dawn?" he asked chuckling as I tensed "Father was nice enough to tell me what he walked in on you doing today" he added wickedly as darted a glance toward me.

"Oooh, what?" squealed Lorelai rubbing her hands together gleefully as I glared at my brother.

"They were kissing," Knox said in a hushed whisper, which wasn't quiet at all "and she was sitting on his lap."

"No" exclaimed Lorelai. turning her head to look at me in shock "Really? It's not surprising the way she looks at you, lan. That girl is smitten with you" she exclaimed.

Smitten? With me? I glanced at Lorelai "You think?"

She rolled her eyes "Men, you're so oblivious" she huffs "Dawn has been looking at you since you hired her. That woman eyes you like you're a piece of candy that's irresistible. It's cute" she admits, c*****g her head and eyeing Knox with soft eyes "and I like her little girl" she added softly.

"I like Faith too," I told her calmly, as Knox nodded agreeably "More than I like Knox's damn ferret" I grumbled as it went skittering past, on chubby legs, streaking past us with something shiny in hand "What's it stolen this time?" I demanded accusingly as Knox pretended not to see it.

"I didn't see Midnight holding anything" Knox denied shaking his head as I glared at him.

"Lies" I snorted shaking my head "That ferret is going to be the death of you one day. You're lucky he hasn't stolen anything valuable yet, because father's likely to get him stuffed and mounted if he takes something father likes away."

Lorelai giggles "I think your father is fond of him. Patches and Midnight get along well together," she said while I feigned fake terror.

"Yeah well, I think that some pets look a lot like their owners" I emphasized "and there's no denying that Midnight takes after Knox in certain aspects" My eyes widened and my voice lowered dramatically.

"Very funny" Knox scowled while Lorelia doubled over laughing and nodding in agreement "If you are talking about his intelligence, then naturally he's taken after me."

I smirked. "How is the search going for Karen?" I asked deliberately and immediately the atmosphere in the room changed.

"It's going," Knox said flatly "without much luck. That woman seems to have nine lives and somebody helping her to keep off the grid. It's infuriating. I can't seem to keep tracks on her. No sooner do I find her, than she's missing again. She could be out of the country" he allowed "but I should still be able to get a read on her. At the moment, I think she's lying low."

I sighed with disappointment but was not greatly surprised. Karen was the least of my concerns right now. "Well then all we can do is wait," I said grimly "No sense being alarmed about something that might not happen."

Knox shook his head "You know she's just waiting until it's the right time to strike. She hasn't given up. We should have realized that Charlotte's psychotic behavior came from somewhere but she just seemed so normal" he said frowning. "Who would have guessed she was crazier than Charlotte?" he asked perplexed.

Lorelai sighed and leaned against her husband. I smiled at them enviously "I'm glad you got married, even if I didn't get to attend" I said sincerely.

Lorelai's face flushed with guilt but I raised a hand "Don't" I warned her "You didn't know when I was waking up, you had yourselves and your child to think about. Don't start acting guilty now. You did the right thing. It just means when I get married that..." the words trailed off as Lorelai suddenly bent over wincing in pain.

"Lorelia are you okay?" I asked, peering at her closely as she clutched at her stomach and cried out.

A large gush of water came pouring out between her legs and my eyes widened as realization hit. s**t. This couldn't be good. Knox looked just as bewildered before recognition struck. "Knox, she's gone into labor. You need to get her into hospital now" I barked, seeing the helpless look on his face.

"Right," he said shakily, as Lorelia reached for him, moaning in distress, glancing around frantically and then picking her gently up "I guess the baby has decided it's coming today after all," he told Lorelai who was wincing in pain and extremely pale in pallor. He began to carry her carefully towards the front door. "Good luck brother" I yelled, as he kicked the door open and went towards the limousine "I wish you the very best" I added as he glanced over his shoulder at me. "Thanks" he thundered back, the front door shutting closed.

I sincerely hoped he didn't panic while trying to get Lorelai to the hospital. Knox could be unpredictable in tense situations.

I could hear the sound of rushed shouting and curse words from outside as Knox began to panic and order the driver around. I grinned to myself. It looked as though I was about to have another nephew. I couldn't wait. Poor Lorelai was going to have her hands full with Knox, the new baby, and Midnight at this rate. I felt a spurt of jealousy. What would it be like to look down at your little baby and feel its little fingers and toes? To know that child was yours and made as an expression of love between yourself and your partner? I would never really get to experience the same and a lump appeared in my throat. While I was happy for Knox and his wife, part of me was envious. They would get to experience something that I would not. While I accepted that I might not have children of my very own, that it might not be in my future, it still proved to be a somewhat bitter pill to swallow. I focussed on the positives instead, such as the arrival of a new nephew shortly and that the sounds of a child's laughter would soon fill this mansion. "If I had a child I would want them to look like a miniature Dawn" I murmured thoughtfully, wheeling myself back out, able to picture a pretty little girl in a pink dress with long blonde hair like Faith's and big blue eyes.

The image made me smile wistfully. I began to get my stuff together. I was determined to be at the hospital for Knox and Lorelai as they gave birth. As I dialed my father's number, certain that Knox hadn't done it yet, he was rather hopeless in situations like these, I began to wheel myself towards the front of the house, where the drivers were waiting. I wanted to see my nephew and hold him in my arms. Today I could be an Uncle, tomorrow I would go back to being angry, misguided, lan Grant again. But I was hoping to put the angry misguided lan Grant behind me and become like the old one again, and hoped with Dawn's help, I could become me again.
