Chapter You Don’t Get It
After I heard his heavy footsteps disappear down the hall I marched into my fathers office with my fists clenched tightly at my side.
“What was he doing here? Didn’t I ask you NOT to invite him over while I was here?”
“Ember he just showed up.”
“So you two have an agreement now that he can just come over whenever he wants? Well aren’t you two getting cozy!” I scoffed as I folded my arms across my chest and popped out my hip.
“Ember, he isn’t as bad as you think he is. He has helped me a lot in the past few weeks since you left and he has no interest in harming anyone here despite what you might think.”
“He promised to take over by force if I didn’t accept his proposal. How is that not threatening? Father, I did everything you asked, I took lessons, I trained with the top warriors of your pack, hell I even sat behind this desk with you for three years learning the ropes of this organization to take over for you and you threw me under the bus the moment he showed up at your door and offered to do the job for me. Can’t you see how that made me feel?”
“Ember this isn’t just my choice. The decision will ultimately come down to the council and if the elders don’t see you fit as Alpha, they will not accept you.”
“So that’s it? You’re just going to let them push me out the way and give everything that you worked hard for to some big shot Alpha who preys on smaller packs just for his own malicious reasons?”
“It’s not like that, he has done amazing things for the packs that he has acquired and he has done it legally and fairly.”
“If you think propositioning young innocent women to be his mate and then taking over when they disagree is fair then you need to get your head scanned. He isn’t who you think he is and the sooner you listen to me the better it will be for the pack.”
He stood to his full height, anger flashing in his eyes as he slammed his hands down on his desk. “You will watch your tone with me young lady! Let’s not forget who had a temper tantrum and ran off to another pack because she didn’t get what she wanted! Alpha Anderson has respect and accolades that could keep our pack afloat if we can't get this Rogue situation under control.”
I stood there as his anger turned to worry and he walked over to the window overlooking the property. I didn’t know we had problems with Rogue’s until now and I doubt he ever would have told me let alone ask me for help.
“How long has this been going on?” I asked quietly hoping it wouldn’t anger him again.
“The first ambush happened after you left.” He paused for a moment then said “One night the border patrol alerted me to a potential threat and by the time I got down there, a dozen of them were stalking around ready to attack. Thankfully, Alpha Anderson was here and not only helped us get rid of them but he also gave me tips to strengthen the borders and had his men teach ours some battle tactics if they ever returned.”
He moved to his desk as I tried to process what he said. We never had problems like this before and our men have always been able to thwart any evil strike from the enemy but why all of a sudden were they hanging around?
“What do they want? Why are they becoming such a problem now?”
He closed his eyes and I knew whatever he was about to say wasn’t going to be good.
“They know I don’t have a male heir to take over the pack and when you left...”
My stomach dropped to my feet and I had to sit down to avoid falling. The guilt of putting my pack in danger because of my carelessness had hit me like a truck and I wasn’t sure him or any of them would ever forgive me.
“I-I...”
“Ember it wasn’t your fault. They have been trying to take over several packs in this region for years. They just thought they had a better opportunity here if the leadership was in shambles.”
His words didn’t make me feel any better because the truth was, I weakened them when I left. I made them vulnerable because of my foolish thought that running away was better than staying and proving to everyone that I am the next Alpha of this pack.
With all this new information I knew there was only one person who could help me. The only problem was trying to convince him to teach me what it takes to be a good Alpha.
“I think I’ll go back to my room. I’m still tired and I didn’t get much sleep last night. Can we talk some more later tonight?”
He nodded his head and the same tired man I saw when I came in returned. He placed his readers on his face and picked up the folders he was reviewing as I walked back to my room.
It didn’t take me long to fall asleep but I was still concerned for the pack. We had been through our fair share of fights and disagreements but my father always chose the fair side, when he could. The council made it hard on him, always questioning his decisions and never backing him up. He ultimately quit trying to change things when they denied all of his suggestions to fix the issues within the pack.
A few hours later, a sudden feeling of panic woke me from my nap and I knew in that instance it was Bishop, sure he wouldn't outright say he was worried about me but I could tell from the sinking feeling in my gut he knew how I had been feeling and it was reflecting back to him.
I got out of bed and decided to get some fresh air, maybe a run would calm my nerves as well as his and I wouldn't have so much explaining to do when I saw him again. Just as I walked out the door I was met with the devilish green eyes of the asshole who was trying to take everything from my family.
"Well hello, sweetheart." He said coyly.
"I'm not your sweetheart. Why are you still here?"
"I see being away didn't do anything for that mouth of yours. I have to say, it turns me on a little." He said as he stepped closer to me and brushed his knuckles down my cheek. "And not that it's any of your business but I am here to recruit some warriors for the new training program your father started."
I stepped away from him and looked into his eyes saying "We don't need your help. We were doing just fine until you showed up and became all buddy, buddy with my father. You may have him and everyone else here fooled but I know the truth about you."
I stomped off towards the woods when I heard him say "You'll come around, they always do."
I ran as fast as I could letting my wolf take over before I turned around and tore his ass up. How dare he come here and brainwash my father by helping him? I had to make sure that I showed my father and the council that I could run this pack and I would be damned if it was with Anderson by my side.
I guess her father doesn't see Anderson for the snake he is. I hope he realizes it before it's too late.
Ember and her father have a lot to talk about and I don't think this is the end of their discussion. He just needs to start taking her seriously.
UGHHHHHH ANDERSON JUST GO AWAY!
