Chapter Acting Weird
I ran inside to the freezer and grabbed something cold for his face then returned to the scene of the crime. When I handed him the bag Mik stormed off and Kam followed after her while I stood there profusely apologizing to Chase. I didn't know what happened and neither did he and the two that did know, weren't talking.
"I better go see about her. I'm sorry, Chase. It won't happen again." I gave him an apologetic smile.
"Don't be sorry. Cole can be a bit of a jerk. He's a horn dog and I'm sure he tried putting the moves on her but I guess he didn't realize she wasn't an easy target." He chuckled as he looked back at Cole nursing his eye with a bag of frozen peas.
I turned on my heel, running as fast as I could the the woods where I knew Mik had shifted to blow off some steam. Kam was waiting for me when I got there but she had an unusual look on her face. I ignored it and ran past her letting my wolf free. She sprinted in the direction where the trail had been freshly turned up from Mik's paws. I sniffed the air catching her scent and followed it to a broken log where she was lying crouched down panting and growling. She always did this when she was pissed and I knew better than to approach her in wolf form.
When I finally took over control of my body, I walked out cautiously letting her know I was there then sat on the ground a few yards away from her, still giving her space but assuring her I was here. She growled and turned her body around showing me her ass end. I swear, if she weren't my best friend I would have pounced on her so fast she wouldn't have known what was coming.
"I'm not going away Mik, so either tell me what happened or I'll beat it out of you."
She snorted and slammed her tail on the ground in defiance.
"Don't slam your tail down at me! Get up and talk to me like an adult!"
My patience was wearing thin and I was beginning to get a headache from her immature attitude when I heard something behind me. I turned quickly but all I saw were trees and rocks. I scanned the area slowly then turned my attention back to Mik. She was still being dramatic so I stomped closer to her when a hand landed on my shoulder making me stop in my tracks.
"Let me talk to her Em." Kam had the most calming effect on people and she always managed to get whatever it was bothering someone out of them with just one look.
She walked up to Mik and crouched down eye to eye with her and smiled. Mik instantly relaxed and whined knowing she couldn't get away from her almost hypnotizing glare. She shifted immediately then turned onto her back staring up at the sky.
"Ugh how do you do that?" She asked through gritted teeth.
"I don't know, it's a gift I guess." Kam said with a victorious grin as she shrugged her shoulders.
I sat back and watched their playful interaction, if you didn't know them you would have sworn they were siblings. I guess in a way, they kind of are, I mean both of them were tossed into foster care as babies and they bonded as soon as they met. My parents had a responsibility to take care of orphaned pups so they took them into the pack house and were raised by the Beta and Gamma families and we've all been inseparable ever since.
They continued bickering and I could feel my headache growing. "Ok, enough. Mik tell us what happened? Why did you punch the Beta in the eye?"
She squinted her eyes and pursed her lips together while throwing her arms over her chest. "It was all his fault. He deserved it and if those two wouldn't have stopped me he would have had more than a black eye."
"Mik you can't just go around hitting people who offend you, especially when we are guests at said Betas pack!" I threw my hands in the air in exasperation.
"I definitely can! That cocky, little, pretty boy had the nerve to say I'm his mate!"
Kam and I stood there with our jaws hanging to the ground stunned from her revelation.
"Yeah you heard me right, he's my mate! UGHHH!" She screamed at the top of her lungs scaring off the birds from the trees and breaking us from our surprised looks.
I didn't know whether to laugh about the situation or cry for Cole because if there was one thing I knew, if she didn't reject him first, she would make his life a living hell. She wasn't going to let him tell her how to live her life or what she could and couldn't do. And if his black eye wasn't proof of that I don't know how much more he would need.
"Are you sure Mik?" Kam asked softly being sure not to scare her off.
She looked at her with rage in her eyes and said "Yes I'm fucking sure, I felt it. That stupid bubbly feeling in your belly when you look into their eyes, that got damn zappy sensation when you touch and that bullshit way of feeling horny as hell from their scent. It made me sick to my stomach." She gagged for effect and I couldn't help the grin that was threatening to break out on my face. "What are you smiling about?" She turned to me and asked.
I threw my hands up in defense and couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips. "I'm sorry Mik, but it couldn't have been that bad! He's your mate, that has to count for something!"
"I don't want a mate, being stuck with one person for the rest of my life is not my idea of fun. I like my life they way it is. I find a guy and fuck his brains out, calling the shots and making sure he knows who's in charge. But to be mated to a Beta?" She walked in circles trying to make sense of the situation but only getting more frustrated.
"Mik just calm down, it'll be ok. Just give him a chance maybe he won't be as bad as you think."
She glared at Kam and snorted. "Yeah ok. Did you see him checking out the other she-wolves right after he said, that word he said. That's why I punched him."
I facepalmed myself. Those two had a lot to work on but first we needed to get them together. We stayed in the woods for a little while longer, only because the air was chilly and we were naked. We headed back to the pack house when I heard another noise behind me, this time it was a low growl. I stopped in my tracks and slowly turned around, expecting to come face to face with a prowler but again there was nothing there. The wind blew and goosebumps prickled across my skin causing me to shiver from the bitter air but I kept my feet planted on the ground, staring into the thick lined forest feeling as if someone was watching me.
"Em you coming?" Shouted Kam.
I turned around and continued walking back to the house trying to decipher the weird feelings that were brewing inside me. It was a mix of fear and danger with a touch of excitement thrown in. Tomorrow I would be investigating but for now I needed rest.
What do you think about Miks mate? Will they try to make it work or agree to keep things like they were?
It sounds like prowlers are on the lose! I just hope no one gets hurt or attacked.
Let me know what you think so far, I really enjoy your comments!!
