The Assassin’s Mate

Chapter Lost

I tried to remember what direction I ran in here from, but with the darkness around me I couldn't tell where I was.

I started to get scared. The woods are no place for a little girl to be, especially in the middle of the night.

But I did manage to sneak out into the woods all the time at my old pack so luckily I knew the stars could lead me home.

I found a spot where the canopy of the trees was open and I peered up into the sky. Once I figured out which star was the North Star, I traced my steps back to the pack house.

I walked for a while before I realized I had followed the wrong star and turned back around trying to find the right one but after being in the woods alone and being hungry I couldn't think.

I stopped and sat down on the ground pulling my knees up to my chest and hugged myself. I started to cry again and soon I was sobbing. I had just found a pack that wanted me and now I'm lost and they will never find me and I will probably die right here in the grass.

I don't know how long I was sitting there but suddenly I felt like someone was watching me. I wiped my nose with my hand and started looking around when I noticed a set of red eyes watching me through the bushes.

I couldn't move but somehow I managed to push myself back only to bump into a tree. There was a loud growl and then the eyes started moving towards me.

Just then a big grey and white wolf walked out of the bush and walked right up to me.

"P-please don't hurt me. I g-got lost." Tears were dripping down my face and I was so scared.

He kept walking towards me.

"No. Don't. Don't come any closer. I'll scream."

The wolf snorted like he was laughing at me. I didn't know where I was and there was no one else around. So the chances of anyone hearing me were small. I could have even been on someone else's land.

I remember my father once saying that if a wolf goes on another wolfs land they would hurt them.

I pulled my knees closer to my chest and laid my head down on my arms. I didn't want to see him hurt me. He walked so close to me that I could feel his breath on my hair and I whimpered in fear. He sniffed my head and legs then growled.

I was shaking so hard my teeth were hurting but then I heard him say "Get up."

I looked up and saw a big man with black hair and dark eyes looking at me. He looked mad so I got to my feet before he hit me.

He grabbed me by my arm and pulled me through some trees behind where I was sitting.

"Let go of me." I jerked my hand away from him but he was too strong and just kept pulling me with him.

"STOP. STOP. LET ME GO!" I screamed at the top of my lungs but he still kept walking.

I continued to fight him the entire time he dragged me through the woods but he didn't loosen his grip. He also never hit me or told me shut up so I tried to calm down a little.

My father would have hit me the moment I didn't get up fast enough for him. I shuttered at the memories of him grabbing my arm and pulling me to the cages. I started to breathe really fast and soon my head felt funny, then everything went dark.

When I woke up I was lying on a small bed in a dark room. There was a lamp on in the corner but it wasn't bright enough to light up the whole room. I could hardly see my own hands.

I got off the bed and walked to the door, opening it slowly, I waited for someone to come to it but nobody did. I took a step out the door and looked both ways but all that was there was a long hall.

I could hear people talking but they didn't sound mean so I walked to where I heard them. I reached a door that was a little open so I looked in.

"Alpha, I found her in the woods. I couldn't just leave her there."

"So why did you bring her here?"

"If she really is Baxter's daughter, the one he sent to Crane's pack, then she can tell us where he is."

The big man behind the desk closed his eyes and said "Let me talk to her."

"Yes, Alpha."

I ran as fast as I could back to the room and just as I sat on the bed I heard the big man who found me walking into my room.

"Come on, Alpha Romero wants to talk to you." He said and then turned around and walked out the door.

I quickly hopped off the bed and ran to catch up to him. He was tall so I was already far behind him. When we got to the door I had to catch my breath.

He opened it and told me to go in. Then he walked behind me and closed the door back making me jump when the door shut.

"What is your name?" The man behind the desk asked.

"E-Elise Baxter." I said with my eyes staring at my toes. I didn't dare look him in his face. He would get mad.

"What pack are you from?"

I started crying because I didn't know which one to tell him. My father didn't want me at Bridgetown anymore and I ran away from my new one but I was so scared I couldn't remember the name of it.

"I-I don't remember. I moved here just the other day from another pack. But my new pack belongs to Alpha Crane."

He looked at the other scary man and smiled.

"What are you doing here?"

My eyes widened because I didn't know what I did wrong. I know I ran away from my pack but I didn't know I was on someone else's land and I got lost.

"I got scared and I ran away." Tears were running down my face onto my shirt and they wouldn't stop. I was so scared he would hurt me that I answered every question he asked.

"Elise, my name is Alpha Romero. We will not be bringing you back to Alpha Crane but I will make you a deal. If you tell me where your real father is, then I promise, you will never be hurt again."

I picked my head up to look at him with a confused face.

"Your father is a bad man. He hurt you, didn't he?"

I shook my head and started crying again.

"It's ok, Elise. He won't hurt you anymore. But you have to promise me if you stay here, you will never let anyone hurt you again."

"But I...I don't know how to help myself. Father never let me train because he didn't want me to. He wanted me to get hurt."

"Don't worry, Elise. I will train you to be the best fighter ever. And then you will be able to protect yourself. But you have to work hard and never give up."

I wiped my tears and nodded my head. Then I told him where my father was and the scary man brought me back to my room to get some sleep.

I dreamt of finally being able to fight and that someone wanted to show me to take care of myself. Maybe this pack wasn't so bad after all.
