Chapter 29
I watch as the Alphas all come into the warehouse. They’re bloody, tired and severely broken.
Word got to us about Grahams death, I was sick with worry about Sawyer.
When the group of Alphas parted and he came into view, I ran to him and jumped into his arms. He held me so tight. I could feel his pain. His grief. I could feel him try to mend his broken heart with mine, but if only it was that easy.
He held the back of my head into his neck. I feel him silently mourn for Graham. I held his head too.
Zander coughs. “We…uh…we need to regroup and figure out the next steps.”
Sawyer puts me down. He kisses my forehead and wipes his eyes with his sleeve. He rolls his head to Zander. “No, what you need to do is get Azriel, Faith, Reggie. Fuck, even Sam, over here and get Graham back.” He growls.
Zander rubs his forehead. “We can’t, Sawyer.”
“Why not? We have all this magic crap. Why can’t we? We have a fucking tree of youth, a pool that brings people back. Why can’t we?” He steps up to Zander.
“Sawyer.” I whisper as I walk up to him and place a hand on his back.
I see his face heat up. “No.” He holds a finger up to me. He turns to Zander. “You better pull your King powers out now. You do whatever you gotta do and you get him back.” His chin quivers. “Right now.”
Zanders face fills with pain. “I can’t.” He whispers.
“THAT’S BULLSHIT!” Sawyer throws a finger at him. “THAT’S COMPLETE BULLSHIT, ZANDER! GRAHAM DIDN’T NEED TO GO LIKE THAT. YOU FIX IT! YOU FIX IT NOW!”
I start to well up as I watch a tear fall from Sawyers eye.
I scan the room and the Alphas are consoling each other and remaining silent. I’m sure they all feel the same.
“I CAN’T!” Zander growls back.
“WHY NOT?!” Sawyer throws his chest at him.
“BECAUSE HE’S BEEN DEATOMIZED!” Zander roars back with grief plaster all over his face.
Sawyer stops and scans Zanders face. “What do you mean?”
Zander scrubbed his face and looked everywhere, but at Sawyer. “My dagger defended itself. Took Graham as a threat that wouldn’t let go, so it upped its protection. It destabilized his atoms. Broke him apart at the molecular level.” He looks into Sawyers eyes as he shakes his head. He sucks in a pained breath. “Sawyer, I would bring him back in a heartbeat if I could, but there’s nothing to bring back. Literally, nothing.”
Sawyer stares at him and sucks in his top lip. Another tear falls. He raises his shaking hand and balls a shaking fist. Zanders eyes flick between Sawyers eyes and his fist.
Sawyer flashes his red gold eyes, turns and heads for the exit.
“Sawyer!” I go to follow and Zander grabs my arm. I look at him and he shakes his head. Meaning leave him alone.
I hold myself and turn to Zander. “What about Eternity?”
He shakes his head. “If the universe didn’t implode, that means he’s still alive here.”
“Could my cure work?” I say quietly.
“I don’t know, but we can’t kill him. He needs to remain intact. Unless another takes his place, we can’t kill him.” Zander leans back on the table. He folds his arms and looks defeated.
“Another. Another cosmic being?” I ask.
He nods. “Or human who wants the job. They can be replaced.”
“How does that happen?” I tilt my head while looking up at him.
He looks down and places his hands on the table edge. “Well, the person who wants to take the job has to be agreed by the others. Then the cosmic being steps aside. If it’s a take over, the person taking over has to kill the being.”
“So, if say you wanted to take over, you’d have to be approved by the other cosmic beings and kill your father.” I state.
He nods. “Hypothetically.”
“Out of curiosity. How much time would we need from the time he’s cured to the universe imploding?” I want to explore this because I feel something brewing inside.
Zander shakes his head. “Matter of seconds. What are you thinking?”
“I think I have a plan.” I arch a brow at him. “I need your help.”

In separate room, I’m trying to contain myself as I stand in front of three people that just blinked into existence in front of me.
A tall blonde woman who calls herself Fate. A shorter auburn haired man who calls himself Hope and an old man with white hair who calls himself Destiny.
The older man steps forward. “Zander, you’re on the wrong side.” Destiny looks him over.
“It’s my fault. He’s helping me free this world.” I swallow my nerves.
He looks to me. “Damica.” He smiles. “You’ve grown to be a strong, brave woman. Shame about your parents. We had high hopes for them, but their paths changed course. We never expected you.”
“What do you mean?” I look at him curiously.
Fate steps forward. “You’re parents were to save this world, but when they had you, that changed everything. We saw many things, but we never saw that.”
I step up to her. “What are you saying?”
Destiny smiles. “Damica, did you really believe you were the only one?”
I turn to him. “Yes, I did.”
Hope stepped forward. “That’s further from the truth.” He almost bows his head. “You were once a solid pack. Here. Your people ruled the land. You were the wolfless shifters of the time. Then the course of time changed things. Shifters started getting wolves and viewed your people as a threat. They also saw you as a weapon. You were enslaved and slaughtered until you were reduced to just two wolves.”
“My parents.” I choke.
He nods. “You’re parents were determined to fight the upcoming threats here, but they stopped when they were visited by a secret member of us who told them their future.”
“The guardian.” Zander mutters.
Destiny smiles. “The guardian. She told them what was to become of them. Helped them cross over to your world. They did it for you, Damica. To save you from becoming the weapon the Falcons would use against the world here. They kept you hidden. One thing they didn’t count on was their deaths. Everything that happened after was a rewritten timeline. I’m unable to communicate to my counterpart to see where your road leads, but just know, we never do anything without reason.”
“So, I’m a natural reflection?” I say softly.
Hope smiles. “Yes, you are.”
Fate places her hands on my shoulders. “You are meant for great things in both worlds. You have great allies and great friends. Trust them and let them trust you. They need you just as much as you need them. You will help them the best way you know how. Believe that.” She says as she looks into my eyes.
I nod. “I do.” I look to Zander and he gives a little half smile.
Destiny puts his hands behind his back. “So you needed our help?”
I nod. “Eternity is a big threat here and we want to fight it. We know how, but we need your approval.”
“Oh? How’s that?” Destiny says.
“I’m sure you’ve been watching. He’s proved himself to be worthy here. I know his past might be a deal killer, but I know his heart is big and he’s almost given his life for this place many times. I purpose you give him Eternity’s power. I promise, his rule will be different and he can turn your world into the world it’s supposed to be. I have faith in him. If you have faith in me, please, trust my judgment.” I look all three beings over.
Destiny strokes his lightly bearded chin. “Hmm…considering a certain red head threw a wrench in my original plan, it might be worth a shot.” He looks to Hope and Fate.
“I'll approach him.” Fate says.
Destiny nods. “You know, if he agrees he’ll have to face Eternity…and kill him.”
I nod. “I’m sure he will and he will win.”
“You seem confident.” Destiny says.
“I know my father and his heart. Rex is your man to end this.” I eye them all.
Destiny nods. “Ok. I’ll write the plan.” He blinks out.
“I’ll talk to Rex.” Fate says and disappears.
Hope stands in front of me. “I know things are sad and grim now, but don’t lose hope.” He looks to Zander and smiles. Zander nods.
Hope turns back to me. “I want to tell you something that will be important later.”
“Ok.”
He leans to my ear. “True love is found under the white moon.” He whispers. He leans back and sweetly smiles at me.
“What?” I look confused.
He scrunches his face and grins. “You’ll figure it out.” He blinks out.
I turn with his secret twisting in my ear. What does that mean, true love? Was he talking about Sawyer or someone else. The white moon is here. If I take his words as they are, my true love is here not on the other side. Why here? Am I only to love natural reflections? Does he mean that Sawyer can’t be with me because he’s unnatural? I’m confused, but I have too many things to think about right to spend time questioning this.
Zander looked at me. “What did he say?”
“You didn’t hear?” Sawyer told me wolves have impeccable hearing so I was confused.
He shakes his head. “No. They have tricks.” He smirks a bit.
“He said…good luck.” I eye him and turn, stuffing my hands in my pockets.
I walk out to the main room and the Alphas are trying to piece themselves together.
I turn my head to my right and Owen seems to be freaking out on Jake. They’re at a spot on the wall, away from the rest of the Alphas.
“I want to go back, Jake.” He spits.
“Just relax, alright. It’s fine. It’s over. Just keep your cool.” Jake looks around as he talks.
“Keep my cool? The guy exploded! Exploded! I want to go back. I don’t belong here.” Owen growls.
“Stop! You need to calm down before the guys notice. Now, stop.” Jake gets into Owen’s space.
Owen bites his lip, heaves a breath and nods.
“I’ll get you out of here. Just…not yet. It wouldn’t look right. Just trust me, okay?” Jake reassures.
“Ok.” Owen agrees. “But this is the last battle Owen fights. I won’t do it.” His face looks angry and scared at the same time as he points aggressively in Jake’s face.
My brows come together. Did he just refer to himself in the third person? I wonder if he does that a lot.
Jake wraps an arm around his shoulder. “Just settle down. Everything will get back to normal soon.” They walk off to another part of the warehouse.
I slightly shake my head then leave to find Sawyer.
Through the man door, I turn my head to the outside wall of the building.
He looks so small. Sitting on his but with his knees pulled up, elbows on them. His hands are laced together and resting on his forehead. My heart broke seeing him like that. Graham must have meant a lot to him. I’m still getting to know the inside of Sawyer, but I can tell he cares a lot about others. Even if he doesn’t show it most of the time.
I slowly approach him. Squatting in front of him, I pull his hands down. He lifts his eyes to mine and I see the devastation behind them. I grab his head and pull him to me. He spreads his knees and pulls me into him. We just sat and held each other.
I try to give him as much comfort as I can, but I don’t know if anything will comfort him enough.
It’s hard losing a soldier. It’s even harder when that soldier is a friend. I can’t imagine being in Sawyers position right now. I won’t.
I’ll let him deal with this his own way. My only mission will be to be there for him when he’s having trouble doing so. That’s why I’m here. That’s why I love him. That’s why no matter the moon, Sawyer will always be mine. During all times. Forever.
