Chapter 24
I keep low as I walk around the pen where the children cry. My insides are on fucking fire. I want to spring them so bad, but I need a distraction first. I need the armory.
The armory, is in the lower levels. It’s good thing I have this place committed to memory in case I ever had to break in.
If the security is as tight as it is on the other side, I’m going to have to do something drastic.
I sneak to the rear of the building where the barracks are. Sticking to the wall, I look to the Alpha dorms. There’s two guards crossing the yard for patrol.
Once passed, I sneak run to the dorms.
I stick to the wall and pull out a thin wire. Wrapping the ends of the wire around my palms, I wait.
The first guard walks to the corner I’m at. He just walks past and I run up behind him, throw the wire around his neck and dragged him behind the building. I bury the wire into his windpipe and snap his neck both ways. He drops to the ground.
The second guard approaches and I try it on him, but he spins and throws a punch. I throw two back. He pulls his gun and I grab his wrist. I twist it, forcing the barrel to his chest and fire two bullets into his heart.
I drag his body to his dead friend and shove the gun in the back of my pants.
I find the service ladder and climb to the roof.
Staying low, I run in the shadows. Stopping at a vent, I think, I’ve done some crazy shit in my life, but taking on the most powerful army in this country, has got to be the dumbest thing I ever did. I’m loving this right now. I think I’ve had a fantasy or two of ripping off these guys.
I take the cover off and tie my rope to a vent pipe that was beside the shaft. I lower it down to get to the main shaft. Dropping my pack down first, I repel down the rope.
I take a second to get my bearings and crawl through the shafts. Bastians office is here and so are the keys to the armory.
Once I see his office, I knock out the vent. Feet first, I drop on the desk. I’m probably being a bit sloppy right now, but I don’t have a lot of time.
I start looking around his desk for keys. Not finding any, I search shelves and other hiding spots. I open the closet and there’s a safe. “Damn.” I got to do this really old school. I put my ear to the safe and turn the dial. I hear the click and I open it. There’s keys, money and other things in here. I pull out a case and open it.
“What the hell?” Nestled in Styrofoam are our pieces. Darcy, Peter, Mateo…They’re all here. I pick up the last piece. It’s the fucking railway tie. “You’ve got to be shitting me?” I close the case and pocket the piece. No reason why it shouldn’t work.
I put the stuff back, lock the safe and close the closet.
I turn and my jaw falls.
“What are you doing in my office?”
I eye a gorgeous brunette with pink eyes. She’s wearing a long, tight dress and her hair is pulled up.
I quickly move in front of the desk. “I’m…here to see Bastian. You don’t know where he is by chance.”
She steps to me slowly with a weird smirk on her face. “As a matter of fact, I do.”
“Great…If you could just…call him…” I stammer as she get uncomfortably close.
“I can’t do that.” Her face is close to mine and she lifts her chin. Her eyes look down on me.
“Why not?” I start to slide away and she follows. My eyes flick from her pink ones to her lips.
“Because I killed him.” She smirks and drives her gaze into my head.
“Oh…uh…OK….My mistake…I’m…I’ll…just leave…” I push off the desk but she’s still right on me like a shark.
“Mmm…You don’t look familiar…” She purrs.
“I’m new…Just started. I was told to…to…” I look around to think of something. “Tell you the tests are done.” I smile.
“Why didn’t you say so?” She stops. “Thank you for the information.” She walks past me.
I blow out a breath.
She turns. “Don’t go far. I eat red heads for desert.” She growls and eyes glow pink.
I swallow and smirk a tiny bit, then she leaves.
I run my fingers through my hair. “Fuck.” I pant. I shake my head and run to the door.
The stairwell is at the end of the hall. I make a run for it. Eight flights down, I practically jump off the halfway point of each flight.
Before I take the next flight, the door to the next floor opens.
I grab the banister of the flight above me and pull myself up and over the railing.
The people walk downstairs. I poke my head up and jump back down.
I take the last of the stairs to the basement.
The basement is lit with halls and offices on either side. I walk low past office windows and get to the hall that holds the armory. There’s also tech storage down here.
People came up the hall and I ducked into an empty office. I ducked behind the door and watched them pass. Slowly, I open the door and sneak out.
I make a right to a room marked armory. I drop my bag and pull out my bandana. I cover the camera and go to work in the keys.
Key after key comes up as failed. “Come on.” I grit hard. I don’t have time for this fucking shit.
Finally, I find the key, throw open the door and walk in.
I flick on the light to a large weapons store. As I walk past the autos and semi autos, a grin spreads across my face. “Hello, Babies.” My hands feel the hand guns. “Daddy’s come to liberate you.”
I put a jog in my step and run to the back. There’s usually a bag storage back here. This dimension didn’t disappoint. I grab a black duffle and go shopping. Dumping in hand guns, some autos and a shit ton of ammo. I pick up a grenade and bounce it in my hand. “Few of these won’t hurt…well, me at least.” I grab several other things and move on.
I throw in knives and more guns. But then I stop. I drop my bag on the floor.
“Hold the phone.” I walk over to a row of launchers. I pick one up and put it on my shoulder. “Now this is what I’m talking about.” I grin. Grabbing another duffle, I put the launcher in it with four rockets.
My last step is the tech room. I pocket a phone, a watch and a handful of neural links. A few tablets. I spy night vision glasses and I put them on. They look just like regular sunglasses, but with tech AI screens I can read.
My last grabs are liquid silver and iron bullets with a healthy dose of mini tranquilizers. “This should do…for now.” I smirk as I turn tail and walk back out of the armory. I grab the two duffels as I walk between them.
Poking my head out the hall, I dip out and slide into the rear stairwell. When I get to the first floor, I slip out the back.
The place is operating as normal as I head back to the service ladder. I drop the guns on the ground and carry the launcher up the ladder. I walk it to the edge of the building. Soldiers are barking orders at people as they’re unloaded off of trucks. I see no children around.
Crouching down, I open the bag and pull out the launcher. My hand grips a rocket as I eye potential targets. Who’s going to make the largest boom.
I stand and put the launcher on my shoulder.
I slowly move my aim across the parking lot. My glasses fixate on targets and civilians.
My lip turns up as I move. “Ennie…Meanie…Minie…Moe.” I pull the trigger. The force kicks me back as the rocket fires. Smoke billows out the back and the rocket makes a whistle sound before it hits the two trucks parked together.
They explode in a giant fireball. I hit the deck as pieces of the trucks fly through the air. Alarms sound and people are yelling and screaming.
I uncover my head, panting. “Holy shit!”
I quickly get up and grab another rocket. I fire it at a confused group of soldiers. They all blow up. Load another and fire at another truck. My last one, I aim at a group of soldiers standing by the prison camp. They explode and bodies are scattered into the air.
There’s more yelling and then I was made.
The gunfire started. Bullets hit the edge of the roof.
“Fuck!” I duck and almost fall on my ass. My feet hit the tar roof and I book it to the ladder.
My hands and feet hold the rails of the ladder and I slide down to the grass. Pulling out two guns, I throw clips in and strap the duffle open over my shoulder.
The barracks filled with men. Pinned on the corner of the wall, I start firing. Hitting anything that moved.
When my guns were spent, I pulled out an auto.
I stepped out and fired a rain of bullets. Soldiers fired and fell. Some ran away.
I’m fucking laughing like a lunatic at the great Falcon Ridge being taken down by a single red wolf.
I reach in the bag and pull out a grenade. Pulling the pin with my teeth, I throw it and duck behind the building. As I run toward the prison camp, the grenade explodes and I hear more screams of agony and pain. What a great sound on this fine blue night.
When I get to the fence, I call the people.
“What’s going on?” Several ask.
I drop my bag and pull out some explosive putty. “I’m saving your kids. Move back.”
They do and I detonate the putty. It breaks the fence.
“STOP!”
I look up as soldiers come through the gate at the front.
“GO! Run! That way!” I order them toward the kids.
I pull out my guns and roll behind a pile of rocks. They fire on me and I fire back at them.
“FUCKING RUN!!” I yell as I change clips.
The hundreds of people shove their way through the fence hole.
Five guys stop behind me. “Need some help?”
I fire more shots. “Help yourself.”
They arm themselves and start firing at the Falcon soldiers.
I jump over the rocks and fire at the guys. As I turn to run, my vest is grabbed and I’m thrown to the ground.
I groan and look to River standing over me.
He smirks. “Big mistake.” He growls.
I smile. “What’s a matter, Riv? Did you find out your balls are just not as big as you thought?”
He lifts my head to him and slugs me in the jaw.
“You are the dumbest wolf I’ve ever met. I’m going to enjoy torturing you.” He holds my head to his.
I look into his eye. “I don’t think you’ll have time.”
“Why not?” He smirks.
I pull out a grenade and pull the pin. I shove it into his vest and push him off. “Because you have 5 seconds to get that out.”
He pulls at his vest in a panic. His arms try to reach it. He’s whining and starting to scream. He can’t get it out.
I dive for cover and River explodes in a gross mess all over my back.
The soldiers all stop for a second. Giving me time to grab my gun and start to shoot my way back to the hole.
“GO!” I wave to the men behind the rock.
They go trough and I grab my gun bag. “Fucking run!” I yell to the men up ahead. “Get to the kids!”
We get to the fence of the kids, I jump the fence with the putty and detonator.
Slamming it on the fence post, I push the 5 to at least 10 year olds back.
“Get back! Get back!” I look up and soldiers were unlocking the door. “Fuck!”
“We got them!” The guys grab the guns and start shooting as they round the compound.
I tell the kids to cover their ears. They’re all scared and crying.
“Look at me. Just look at me.” I point to my eyes as I crouch. “Ok. Loud boom. Don’t be scared. Big hugs. Everyone big hugs guys.” The children hug each other.
I detonate the fence. Gunfire rings out and then I hear it. The best fucking sound ever. The sound of pissed off wolves.
I stand and the area outside the kids prison fills with wolves of all shapes and sizes. The parents are on the attack. Just fucking beautiful.
I look to the kids. “Ok. Older ones grab little ones. Through the fence and to the trees. Hurry.” I usher the kids through the hole. The older kids run to the forest with little ones in tow. They’re all terrified, but free.
“HEY!!”
I turn and push my chest out. My eyes scan the King himself.
He has a sword and he’s missing an arm at the shoulder.
We stand off. The fires burning on the ground behind me, light up his dirty, shirtless body. “My how far the king has fallen. Zan, you don’t look so hot, buddy.” I pull my gun and aim it.
“I’ll kill you.” He growls. His chest is heaving and he lets out a Zeta growl.
It hurt, but not as bad as it use to be. “Gee, Zan. You just don’t have the same kick your other half has. What happened to you?”
Just then Zander screamed in pain as he’s forced to his knees by a large hand gripping his armless shoulder. “I happened to him.”
I raise my gun and stare into the evil eyes. “Eternity.”
Zander is in pain and whining on the ground.
I look to Zander and back up to his dad. “What did you do to him?” My mouth went small as I absorb the situation.
He looks down at his son. “We came to an understanding. He lives, runs this little operation and I get his power.” Eternity looks back up to me.
“You took his power?” Confusion fills my face.
“No. I took back the power I gave him.” He lets Zander go and he falls to the ground.
Eternity lifts his hand and produces a lightning bolt. “He was just holding onto it for me. My little battery bank.” He grins and looks back at the pathetic excuse of a king on the ground.
“So, is this you or the mirror you?” I need to know because if he’s ours and hopped up on Zander juice, we could be in serious trouble.
He claps his hands together and walks toward me. “Unfortunately, the cosmic barrier between dimensions, it’s a little…explosive. So to answer your question, no. You’re on my turf.”
He throws a bolt and I jump out the way. I shoot at him and the bullets fill his white t shirt.
He looks down. “You need to do better than that.”
I pull a grenade. “Like this?”
I throw it and run out the hole. It explodes and I cover my head. I look through the fence. Zander is on his back and Eternity is gone.
I run for the trees when he blinks in front of me. I swing and he catches my fist. His other hand grabs my throat and he picks me up off my feet. “I don’t like it when you guys fight back.” He growls.
I feel the pressure on my neck increase as I try to punch his arm off.
He’s hit in the back with a bright pink ball of energy that burns him. He grinds out the pain and drops me.
I’m land on my knees, coughing.
Eternity turns and Reggie is bouncing an energy ball in his hand.
“Eternity.” Reggie grins. “You know it’s rude to arrive unannounced. This tea party is by invitation only.”
Eternity turns. “I thought I got rid of you.” He growls.
Reggie steps forward. “Oh, you did. It took Destiny quite a long time to piece me back together. He had hit pause on time for a while. So we didn’t miss anything.”
Eternity calls up a lightning bolt. He throws it and Reggie throws his ball. They cancel each other out in the middle of the gap.
Reggie laughs. “You don’t have the power, you…what did you call them again?” He leans around Eternity and looks at me.
I lift my pained face to him. “Cosmic dicks.” I growl out, rubbing my throat.
Reggie smiles. “Right.” He looks back at Eternity. “You cosmic dick.”
Reggie throws out a pink bolt of power from his hands and Eternity matches it with bolts of lightning.
The power blows around the two men as they clash in a battle of magic.
The wind from it blows so hard I have to block my face. My hair whips around and the light from the magic is blinding.
I look to the wolves fighting for their lives and I watch as Reggie starts to struggle.
Eternity is forcing a smile as he pushes harder on the sorcerer.
I pull out a big knife from my bag and stand. My legs shaking and I’m trying to remain stable in the wind.
I clench my teeth. Fighting the power, I run at Eternity’s back, leaping into air and bringing the blade down between his shoulder blades. He arches back and screams. I pull the blade down and slice his back open 8 inches deep to the bottom of his spine.
I let go and fall to the ground on my back.
He turns and looks extremely pissed.
He was about to grab for me when Reggie hit him with a spell and Eternity arched back and exploded in white light.
I had to cover my face.
I slowly uncover it and stare at Reggie. “What did you do?”
Reggie walks over and grabs my hand. He pulls me up. “I blew him up from the inside. He’ll be a while before he finds another suit.”
“Cool.” I smile.
We run for the trees and the adults are running headed in the same direction.
Once at the treeline, I bark orders. “Everyone, grab as many kids that will fit on your back. We’re blowing this place.”
The wolves and people start loading children on their backs and disappear into the trees.
Damica met me as I was rooting through my bag.
She hugged and kissed me. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” I kiss her again.
“Come on. Let’s go.” She says.
“Not yet.” I pull out a ball and turn a dial on the top of it.
“What are you doing? She stood and looked at me.
“Announcing my departure.” I smirk.
I twist to my feet and walk back out to Falcon.
Tossing the ball in my hand, I walk slowly through the current fights still ongoing. With fires burning, I turn to the front of Falcon Ridge. I kiss the ball. “Fuck you.” I growl.
I throw the ball through the front widow of the lobby. The ceiling to floor glass smashes and ball rolls inside.
I turn and walk away.
“RETREAT! RETREAT!” I yell to those still fighting.
The wolves on our side turn and head for the trees. I place my hands behind my back. I get half way across the training field and the bomb explodes. Falcon Ridge blows up in a giant fireball. I can hear it’s pieces falling all around me as I feel the shockwave. I turn and smile at my announcement. Half the building is gone and on fire.
“Take that, mother fuckers.” I turn back, grab my bag and Damica. Giving her the bag, I quickly get undressed and shift. Damica packs my clothes and jumps on. We tear into the trees as we leave the Falcon utterly destroyed.
I know I’ve only slowed them down. I’m sure they’ll piece themselves back together quickly, but now I’ve taken River off the board and have some really good Intel. I’ll report back in a few days. First, I have to help with all these people.
I also need some much needed time alone with my little fox. I think I’ve earned it after tonight.
