Chapter 9: Are you fucking crazy?
Thursday was a blur, she woke up on the warehouse floor in a towel, then she blinked and Friday was upon her. Her body was sore, her mind was tired and Wednesday played through her head like a movie on a never ending loop. His touch, his kiss, the feeling never left her. He said they would finish what they started. But he never said he wanted you! Who would ever want a waste of space like you? Just look at you, small, pathetic, a freak of nature! He’ll take what he wants and throw you away like the trash you are! The words cut deep, slicing through her filling her with pain and sadness. For the second time in two days she asked how she could be so stupid? She was sitting at her resin station and she turned her head down, closing her eyes tight. Hoping to stop the words, the pain, the sadness. Hope is just another word for soul crushing defeat. You will never be good enough, never be wanted by anyone! They kept assaulting her, she kept trying to fight them but they sunk in and had a hold of her. Her heart felt like it was on the verge of shattering, she could feel the tears forming, but she refused to cry, refusing to let them break her anymore than she already was. She breathed deep, fighting them back, trying to remain strong. Weak little girl, you’ll never be strong!
Completely lost in thought, she didn’t hear Johnny walk into the warehouse. He reached out and touched her shoulder. A defensive instinct took over and she punched him in the throat. Caught off guard by this move, Johnny fell backwards gasping holding his throat.
“Oh Shit! I am so sorry.” She was so embarrassed by what she did, her face tomato red. “Fuck! Are you ok?” She said, trying to help him to his feet.
“What the hell Dax?” He managed to croak out. It was then that she heard the deep laugh of a mountain. Her head snapped up and before her stood Kane, he was holding his sides as he laughed hard and loud at Johnny. Dax glared at Johnny.
“You traitor, how could you? Now I don’t feel so bad” betrayal evident in her eyes.
“What? I never betrayed you, I technically never said he wouldn’t be coming, I said I would be.” Johnny defended himself, protecting his throat from another punch. Dax glanced up at Kane and all her sadness she had been holding turned to anger and had reached its breaking point, it was his turn to squirm, she clenched her fist and he immediately put his hands up to surrender.
“I just want to talk,” he said quickly. Johnny had already moved away from her, still rubbing his throat. Kane stepped closer to her and she grabbed the first object she could find and threw it at him. It whizzed by his head narrowly missing him.
“Are you fucking crazy?” His eyes shot open, as the medium sized paper weight shattered behind him.
Yes! “No! But if you come any closer I’ll throw everything in this fucking warehouse at you” she snarled. Kane backed up. Guess she’s done being sad! Sad, she’s fucking pissed! Ky was laughing.
“You have five seconds to tell me why you’re here.” Dax reached over to a shelf and grabbed a pointy paper weight in the shape of a pyramid. She missed with the first one, he didn’t want to see if she would connect with the second. Kane glanced at Johnny, who just shook his head, and retreated behind a shelf.
“I already took a punch to the throat, this one’s all you brother!”
“Thanks for the help”
“You better say something though, and say it quick”
Kane kept his hands up
“Uh...uh…” too late she threw it. Kane hit the ground hard as the pyramid flew above his head he felt one of the tips graze his hair as it sailed by. Shit! She has some good aim! Ky was gushing in his head. Are you fucking kidding me right now? What? She has great aim!
“Would you stop aiming for me?” Kane yelled,
“Why, you’re a big guy, you make a good target” As she threw another one it smashed off the top of the desk he was hiding behind. A piece of it broke off and sliced his cheek, he tried not to say anything. He can’t let her know she hit him, she’ll have questions if she sees there’s no wound.
“Dax, baby you nee-“
“Don’t you baby me, I am not your baby” and she threw another one.
“Please tell me she’s out of ammo”
“Fuck! She has a whole shelving unit of those things”
“How brave do you feel Beta?”
“Like a big fucking pansy right now, Lacey doesn’t even scare me this bad, has she hit you with any of those”
“Just with bits that have broken off”
“You son of a bitch” Another one sailed over the desk and landed square on his shin. He stifled a moan of pain. Fuck! Think Kane.
“Johnny I have an idea”
“NO! I am not playing target practice for your crazy pissed off mate”
“I just need a distraction”
“FUCK NO!”
“She’s not even mad at you”
“I’d like to keep it that way”
“Johnny!”
“Kane!”
“Please man I really need your help”
“FUCK! If I get hit with one of those, I’ll beat the shit out of you”
“Deal”
She threw another one in Kane’s direction,
“You asshole!” She screamed at him. He had that coming, he really was an asshole. She grabbed another weight off the shelf and was about to throw it,
“Dax!” Johnny’s voice startled her. She spun and faced him, he may not have betrayed her, but it sure felt like it.
“I thought we were friends Johnny” she said her voice breaking
“We are friends” he said
“Some friend I asked you not to bring him. One fucking favor and I don’t know if you couldn’t or you wouldn’t do it” tears welling in her eyes she fought them back
“I don’t understand Dax, what did he do?” The dam broke
“You don’t know, I find that hard to believe, you probably laughed with him….” Her tears flowed down her face and her sobs drowned out her words.
“Dax, what did he do?”
“You two must think I’m fucking stupid” she choked out between sobs, He gave you hope! Johnny went to touch her and she pulled away from him.
“Don’t touch me, don’t fucking touch me” she stepped back right into Kane’s arms, he closed them tightly around her and held her to him. She wiggled and kicked furiously, she dropped the paper weight she was holding as she struggled to get away from him. Her fear consumed her and she was beginning to panic as she fought to get him off of her. He pulled her back into the break room, she was screaming profanities at him, sailors would be proud. Johnny just watched, his heart broke, he caused this. She asked him for one thing, one simple thing and he didn’t comply. And now she thought they planned this whole thing to make fun of her, what kind of friend was he?
“Let go of me” she screamed, still kicking, still fighting, still trying to get away from him. “You fucking son of a bitch, let me go” He put her down inside the break room and closed the door. The second her feet touched the floor she scrambled to get away from him. Her fists clenched and her little body was shaking, she kept her profile to him but she never took her eyes off of him watching his every move in the room.
“I had hoped we cou-“ he started, she stiffened at that word
“Hope, now that’s a dirty four letter word” she spoke, cutting him off. “Tell me Kane, did you get a good laugh?” She asked,
“What?” His eyes were wide.
“You and Johnny, did you get a good laugh? Make fun of the little freak. Tell me what was the plan, let me in on the joke huh, cause I could use a good laugh! What was it, to see how long it would take to get in my pants?” She hissed at him
“That’s not what I want-” He couldn’t believe this, how she could think he was just making fun of her was beyond him. Every move he made she watched.
“Wanted, oh but it was right, you wanted to get in my pants, and you did, you got in them and me out of them. Then your magic phone call that saved you from having to go farther, but wait didn’t you guarantee we would finish what we started, that’s why you’re here? Now I get it! How stupid of me, but I am not surprised, I have been really stupid lately when it comes to you. You want to finish it right, fine let’s finish what we started” she went to take off her shirt, but he crossed the room and stopped her.
“Dax stop, this is not what I want” he yelled. Her eyes widened as he held her wrists, she pulled them away and he went to grab her again. Her first hit came solidly across the left side of his jaw, he deflected her right fist, but she didn’t stop trying to hit him. He knew she needed it, she was hurting and she needed to release it. He kept moving closer to her while she kept backing up and hitting him. When she backed into the wall, he closed the distance and pressed against her. He caged her into the wall, she pushed him but he didn’t budge, she kept trying to push him away. Her fear started to grip her, she felt trapped, unable to escape from him. She kept pushing and pushing, trying to get him to move. Her breathing hard, her heart beating fast, she didn’t want to show him she was afraid but she couldn’t help the tremble her body made.
“Get off me!” She struggled underneath him trying to mask the fear she was feeling with her anger, but he refused to budge, this was not a joke to him, he could sense her fear, but he needed her to understand.
“Please!” She whispered looking away from him, still trying to push him away from her.
“You think this is a joke? Does this feel like a joke to you? You listen and you listen good, this never has been, nor will it ever be a joke. Johnny had nothing to do with what happened between us. My goal was never to get into your pants, I would never do something like that. I’m not that kind of man, I don’t play stupid games.” He was trying to make her see but she kept fighting to get away from him. When his hand moved near her face, she slammed back harder into the wall. The air forced from her lungs at the action. He watched her flinch away from him, using her arms to protect herself. She did not honestly think he would hurt her did she? The anger that surged through him at the action was overpowering, it radiated off his body. She recoiled more away from him, but she had nowhere to go, she was trapped between a mountain and a wall. I’m gonna fucking die here! She thought. Her body trembled more against his. The more anger he felt the more she feared him.
“Please!” She whispered, staring up at him from behind her arms begging him, pleading with him to just step away.
“I wanted.…I want to know you, I have to know you” He stared down into her eyes, he felt her trembling body beneath him. Tears slipped down her cheeks, so much pain, so much sadness and fear, he just wanted to hold her, to make it all go away.
“Why?” She squeaked. Because you’re my mate, my forever! He thought, he breathed a deep sigh before he answered.
“There’s something about you that stirs something in me, I tried to take it slow. I really did, but I was weak, I broke. I never meant to push you, or move that fast. I never meant to hurt you, to cause you pain. I can see you’ve had more than your fair share, I just want to know you” her eyes widened at him, the truth he spoke was held in his gaze, he grazed her cheek, her breath caught, as she flinched and pulled her face away. She didn’t want him to touch her, she was afraid of him touching her. This broke his heart, what has happened to his mate that she would fear the touch of another? He felt the anger at this rising up in him again, but he had to keep his control, she would fear him if he got angry. Keeping his body pressed to hers, using her scent, her touch to keep himself calm, he took deep breaths, hoping hers would respond. It took a few minutes before she started to mimic him and they stayed like that until he felt her breathing return to near normal. There was something about him that calmed her, it enticed her, it angered her, it made her hope. It brought out every primal, carnal urge she didn’t know she had, it terrified her.
“Now if I let you go, will you hit me again?” Kane asked, he still saw so much fear swirling around her eyes. He needed to let her go, even if it meant getting hit again she was terrified.
“I-I make no promises” she hiccuped. He arched an eyebrow at her but stepped back to give her space, she wrapped her arms around herself, shrinking back against the wall away from him, making herself smaller, she turned slightly away, her fingers trailing something in her hair. She didn’t look directly at him, she kept her focus on the floor, but she was very aware of every movement he made in the room. A sad smile crossed his face. What happened to my mate? He has never smelled so much fear in his life.
“I deserved to get hit, I was an idiot. If it didn’t look like those things would really hurt, I might have let you hit me with a couple.” A soft laugh escaped her lips and she flushed a bit. “I will leave you to collect yourself. I would like to talk to you about having a piece commissioned” she nodded, but never looked at him. He opened the break room door and turned back to her.
“I really am sorry!” He repeated, looking at her.
He walked out into the warehouse and Johnny landed a blow to the right side of his jaw.
“What the fuck?” Kane said, holding the side of his mouth. His lip was split and bleeding, but it would heal quickly. Johnny was angry, his eyes were black dripping with hate, hate for Kane, for what Kane did.
“Dax is my friend, you son of a bitch!” He growled. “She is a pure soul and doesn’t deserve to be hurt” Johnny hit him again.
“I didn’t mean to do it” Kane defended himself against Johnny’s attacks. His friend was not backing down. Though he couldn’t figure out why. Johnny was only this protective over his family.
“You don’t even know if you want her, you haven’t even accepted her, four days ago you were questioning whether it was a mistake” Johnny snarled and lunged, he collided with Kane causing them both to fall back into the shelving unit of paper weights. They both rolled around the warehouse floor throwing hits and words at each other. They knocked over two desks, scattered books and papers. Pencils went flying everywhere.
“ENOUGH!!” Kane boomed. He didn’t like using his Alpha voice on his friend, but things were going too far. Both men sat on the floor breathing hard, glaring at each other.
“She might be your friend, but she is MY mate and your future Luna. I accepted her four days ago when I came back from my run. It was never my intention to hurt her, and I am going to do everything in my power to make it right. I claimed her Wednesday morning” Kane said his voice low seething at Johnny “Including getting hit with paper weights, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to make her happy, and I am planning on spending the rest of my life doing it” Kane was calmer now. Johnny looked at him, breathing hard, all anger and hate washed from him.
“Good talk!” he laughed and fell on his back.
“Asshole!” Kane laughed and did the same.
Feeling as collected as she could Dax stepped out of the break room, and her eyes widened at the state of her warehouse,
“What the fuck happened?” She was stunned at the scene before her. Two of her work desks were knocked over and the contents were all over the floor, her shelf that had the paper weights on it was on its side, and two men were lying on the floor breathing hard. They both looked at her, then at each other, at the same time they started talking trying to explain their side of things. She looked from one to the other, then held up her hand, causing both men to fall silent, and watch as she walked to a corner by the break room door. She grabbed two brooms and approached them. She handed one to Johnny and the other to Kane.
“I have to step out for a bit, when I get back this better be cleaned up” she said gesturing to the mess. Turning on her heel she walked out not even giving them a chance to say anything else. They just stared after her,
“Is she serious?” Johnny asked, looking at the broom.
“I think she is,” Kane replied, scratching the back of his head as he stood up and started sweeping. Johnny just looked at him
“Are you serious?” He asked, motioning to the broom in his hand. Kane stopped sweeping and looked him dead in the eye
“She threw paper weights at me, I don’t want to know what she’ll do if we don’t clean this up so yes I’m fucking serious” and he went back to sweeping, Johnny just nodded and started picking up the papers.
