Chapter 89: Will you be my wife?
The events of the night before weighing on his mind. The conversation he had with her off to the side away from the others and the promise he made running on a loop. Kane pulled the sentries off the warehouse, he had the cameras turned off on the outside of the building. Not happy about the lack of security around her, she met him halfway. Marco had set up cameras all over on the inside with the feed leading to his system to keep them monitored. He also had motion sensors set up to alert them to any movement around, near or in the building. She didn’t want to know where they were, so she wasn’t there when they were set up. Carter still went with her to the warehouse, he refused to leave her side including threatening to handcuff himself to her. Delta protects his Luna.
It took most of the morning to pull this off, and she was finally back in her warehouse working after being away for most of the week. She was as unprotected as any of them would allow her to be. Knowing full well the boys were in the woods and any sign of trouble they would be in the building. As she walked around her warehouse it felt foregin to her. So much has happened here, she didn’t know if it would ever feel the same or if it would even come close to feeling the same.
“Are you ok Luna?” Carter asked,
“I don’t know Carter” She replied as she moved around from station to station trying to find something to keep herself occupied.
“Do you want to sit down?” He asked, following her. She had checked her messages, nothing, no online orders, everything had disappeared, but then what did she expect. She disappeared and any customers she had disappeared as well.
“Yes….no! I sit down and I think I should be doing something. I’m walking around and I don’t know what to do.” She shook her head.
Carter looked at his Luna, she seemed lost, unfocused. He’s never seen her lost or unfocused before, she’s always thrown herself forward and did.
“What would you be doing right now if this was before all this started?” He asked,
“You mean before all the crazy? Probably swearing at Georgie in my head for being incompetant” She replied, earning her a chuckle from him. “I know what you’re trying to do Carter and I appreciate it. I really do. But I don’t know what to do to occupy my time. I have no orders to fill, no clients to talk to. Everything stopped the second I disappeared.” She added.
“What about making art for the Art Festival?” Carter suggested. She thought about that for a minute, before she nodded. What else was she going to do? She called Alpha Thomas and listened to him when he told her his ideas for the festival and the direction he wanted to take it. She gave her input when he asked her direct questions and she thought for the first time this festival might not actually suck. Seemed they had someone in charge who actually knew what they were doing. They had until Aug 27 to get everything ready. For the second time she asked herself what else she was going to do? The ball was in the court of a psychotic wackadoo to quote her brother and they were waiting on him to make a move.
Donny was in town hoping to catch a glimpse of the tall one. He was hard to miss, he stood out in any crowd, but to his dismay it seemed the tall one was not in town today. Fuck! He thought. How was he going to get the tall one’s focus on Magnus if he was never around when he wanted him to be? The tall one frequented Glenda’s Diner, maybe he was there. It would have to be his last stop, he couldn’t leave that simpleton alone for long. He would probably also have to bring something to feed him. He would rather be bringing food to his angel, but he couldn’t right now. The chime above the door rang and the old woman behind the counter looked his way. She gave him a polite nod and motioned for him to sit somewhere in the diner. He took a quick look around but did not see who he came to find. He wouldn’t stay, he would just order his meal and be on his way. Approaching the counter he waited for the old woman to come to him.
“What can I get for you today Donny?” Glenda asked, though she was polite her tone was a little harsh. Donny must not be one of her favourite people! He thought. Wonder what he did to this old battle axe to get in her bad book?
“Two burgers with the works, both with fries and two cokes please” Donny replied, he kept a pleasant smile on his face as she gave him the once over.
“How is your mother?” Oh good, chit chat!
“She is coping the only way she knows how.” He simply replied. He couldn’t care how Erin was dealing with this. She would box up all his stuff and just put it in the basement with everything else.
“How are you doing?” Donny dropped his eyes to the counter, he really wished people would stop asking him that. He was tired of lying, he didn’t think they would like the truth. He was happy Kent was dead, he was tickled about it actually. It brought pain to the woman that birthed him and then neglected him.
“I’m dealing!” He finally answered when he looked back up at her. Glenda simply nodded, told him that his order would be ready in 20 minutes and to have a seat.
He sat there waiting for his order praying no one would come and approach him. He was tired of this humdrum town, with its humdrum people. He wanted his angel and he wanted to leave and start their life together. He heard a few people speaking about the Art Festival and he cringed. Erin was going on and on about it and then she stopped one day. Before Kent sold the store to the tall one, he voted to have someone else head up the Art Festival. Erin didn’t know who, but she seemed quite upset that it would not be her. When he heard his angel’s name mentioned his interest piqued. She was supposed to head up the Art Festival but there were mixed signals between her and the tall one. He never asked her, then this was about the time she was attacked in her loft. The tall one was protecting her. When he overheard that she was at her warehouse today working on some art for the festival he became really intrigued. Maybe he would go and see if these rumours were true. Glenda placed his order down in front of him. He thanked her kindly, paid and left. He had to see if his angel had finally come home.
Hours had passed and Carter was covered in paint.
“Art is messy!” Carter commented as he looked down at his paint covered shirt and jeans.
“That wasn’t my fault this time. I told you to get out of the way of the swing” Dax quipped back trying to hide the humour she found in his appearance. This was nothing new to her, she made herself look like an easter egg on more than one occasion, it was one of the reasons she wore coveralls when she used the pendulum. Carter clearly was not aware of how messy art could actually be. She offered him a pair of coveralls but he declined and was now regretting that choice. Carter couldn’t help but glare at her, he also now understood why his Alpha would not allow this catastrophic contraption at the house. Everything would be mulit-coloured if she were to ever use it.
“You might want to get cleaned up” She smiled sweetly at him as he grumbled and moved past her. Following him to the front still trying to stifle her laughter, Carter stopped abruptly and she ran into his back.
“Someone’s here!” Two words and the colour drained from her face. Two words and her breath caught. Two simple fucking words and her heart was ready to beat out of her chest.
“Luna! Luna! Luna!” Carter called her a few times then grabbed her shoulders to get her attention. Her eyes snapped to him and she knew what he wanted her to do, but she couldn’t get her feet to move. She was frozen in place as crippling fear entered her body.
“Luna, you have to move now!” Carter barked at her. That drew her out of her head and her feet stumbled forward. She caught herself from falling and scrambled to find her hiding spot that only her and Carter knew about.
Staying low, Carter moved silently and quietly through the warehouse in the direction of the scent. He again stopped abruptly when he came upon a girl no taller than his Luna. There was something about her though, something that caught his attention immediately. He didn’t know what it was, but it was familiar to him. He studied her for a few minutes. Her ears adorned with earrings came to points at the tips, like his Luna’s. She appeared to fully embrace having pointy elf ears, why else would she draw so much attention to them. The colour of her hair was unique as well, raven black with crimson red streaks. When she turned she had the most captivating turquoise eyes he’s ever seen. Carter watched as she looked around the warehouse at some of the different art that was on display, her eyes would dance with merriment at certain pieces then they would cloud over at others. This girl had her own past it would appear. She was clearly not a threat to his Luna, but she was something. Pulling his phone, he quickly messaged Luna letting her know there was no threat to her.
Stepping from behind the shelf he was using for cover Carter approached the girl standing in the middle of the warehouse.
“Holy fuck!” She exclaimed wide eyed as she took in the sight of him. “What happened to you?”
“Art is messy!” He stated firmly
“You’re telling me. Did a paint can throw up on you?” She asked, looking him up and down.
“No, do you need something?” Carter asked her, trying to gauge whether or not she was friendly.
“Yeah! I’m leaving town and I realized I didn’t get a souvenir. I take one from every place I’ve been. Some people told me there was a souvenir shop, but the nice lady at the diner….Ginger I think her name is said the only place you should be getting a souvenir from is Custom Creations and I was in luck it was open today.” Carter stared at her wide eyed.
“Glenda?” He asked,
“Who?” She asked perplexed, her eyebrows furrowing.
“Glenda, the lady at the diner” Carter replied,
“If that’s her name, sure her too,” The girl replied, nodding her head.
Dax was cautiously walking towards the front of the warehouse, she could hear muffled voices. She wished her wolf hearing would kick in, but Kane said that won’t happen until her wolf is fully awake and has shifted for the first time. Then all her senses will come. Carter started to come into view, she couldn’t see who he was talking to, but it was a female’s voice. And judging by the slight rasp in her drawl she wasn’t from around here. She watched as they stood there staring at each other, neither one knew exactly what to do.
“You work here?”
“Yes!”
“You make all the art?”
“No!”
“You work here but you didn’t make the art, what are you like, the guard or something?” She overheard the girl ask Carter. She had to bite back a laugh whoever this was, she was very straightforward and direct with her questions.
“No!” He replied,
“You’re not very talkative!” She quipped as she continued to look around for a bit
“You talk enough for the both of us” Carter fired back, she shot him a grin
“I get that a lot. It’s how you meet people though. I’m told I’m not a people person and I don’t meet them very well, so I’m trying to meet new people, and I think I’m doing ok. I only hit one person today, that’s my personal best. Some people just make you mad you know and you want to hit them. Problem is I don’t stop at the just wanting to part” Carter continued to stare at her. Maybe she was a threat to his Luna, if she had impulse control issues this could be a big problem.
“Who’s your friend Carter?” Dax asked as she came around the corner only to stop when she saw the other girl in the warehouse. Both their eyes widened when they took in the sight of each other.
“Holy fuck!” Was all the girl could say. Carter quickly moved to stand in front of her, he no longer was so certain of the little firecracker who just admitted to having uncontrollable violent tendencies.
“You’re much more beautiful in person than in the picture I saw” The little girl said to her.
“Have we met?” Dax asked as she peered at her from around Carter.
“No, but I saw your picture, heard some stories too, but that’s usually just rumors and bullshit spread by dumb people. Ember Sheppard.” She smiled brightly as she introduced herself.
“Dax, and this is my friend Carter” Dax replied,
“Hi Carter! It’s nice to meet you. He was talking so much that I never caught his name.” Ember said, trying not to laugh at the look on Carter’s face. Dax giggled behind him, as she put a hand on his arm to move him to the side.
“Is there something I can do for you Ember?” Dax asked,
“Oh yeah! I’m leaving town today and I need to get a souvenir. I take one from every place I visit. And the lady at the diner….Glenda, said this was the best place to get one.” Ember excitedly told her.
“You’re not from around here?” Dax asked, she started to approach the other girl, but Carter put his hand in front of her and shook his head.
The motion didn’t go unnoticed by Ember and she cocked one of her eyebrows at it, but said nothing.
“No, I was visiting my Uncle Theo….he owns the jewellery store.” Dax immediately touched the necklace around her neck and a wry smile crossed Ember’s face. “Just passing through, looking for something, but I don’t know what it is. Figure when I find it I’ll know until then I just kinda bounce. Gonna head west to the mountains, but I want to see Salem first then I have an Aunt in Ontario I’m gonna stay with for a bit then head across Canada.” She added.
“That sounds pretty cool, have you been to the mountains before?” Dax said nodding,
“Yeah, should be a great trip. Gonna see a giant nickel and everything. Never been to the mountains but I might like them and find what I’m looking for there. Hated the beach and I have an aunt in Louisiana, definitely didn’t like it there. I got bit by an American murder log totally not my scene.” Ember was telling her.
“What the fuck is an American murder log?” Carter asked,
“A gator!” Carter’s eyes widened at that. “Tried to take a big ol’ bite out of my leg and I had to beat it off with a stick”
“What kind of souvenir are you looking for?” Dax asked, not entirely certain what to say about the gator.
“I don’t know, but you got some cool stuff. You make it all?” Ember asked,
“Yeah I did!” Dax replied nodding,
“You’re pretty fucking awesome. Wish I had this kinda talent.” Ember replied as she looked around some more.
“How about a tour? Maybe something will catch your eye” Dax offered,
“That would be great….Is he gonna follow us?” Ember asked, as she saw Carter start to move.
“Yeah!” Dax nodded,
“Oh ok. Hope he doesn’t interrupt too much.” Dax stifled her giggle,
“Yeah, he’s a regular chatterbox,” Dax agreed, nodding. Ember laughed out at that one.
“I like you Dax. You’re funny” Carter could only glare at both of them. His Luna was bad enough sometimes, now he was dealing with two pint sized sassy elves.
Donny had got the confirmation he was hoping for, and was now on the way back to Magnus. He didn’t want to move too close to the building, but he did see vehicles in the parking lot and the lights were on. His angel was home. This thrilled him, getting to her was going to be much easier now. A ripple of anger surged through him at the same time. Why would the tall one put her in the open like this? Did he not know how dangerous it still was for his angel? He had taken care of some of the monsters in her life. Carl was dead before he got the chance to act, Kent was dead, Magnus will soon be dead, Erin….was well on her way, he just had to get to his brother first. Those two though will be taken care of in time, now was not the time. Turning his attention back to the task at hand, how to find the tall one. He was always around at the most inconvenient times but when he actually wanted him he was nowhere to be seen.
Fuck! This was not going to work if the tall one did not get on the same page. An idea had entered his head, but he hated it. He hated the thought, and he hated himself for thinking the thought. He only knew of one sure fire way to bring the tall one into town. The thought of causing harm to his angel brought sickness to his stomach, it pained him to have that thought, but it might be the only way. Fuck! No, no, no! There has to be another way! What if it was the only way? No, there has to be another way! It’s not like the tall one is Batman, there is no tall one signal that he could flash into the sky to bring him charging into town on his white horse to save the day. Pulling over onto the shoulder, he quickly exited the vehicle and emptied the contents of his stomach on the side of the road. This is not what he wanted to happen, but the tall one was not cooperating with him. He was to blame for what had to happen to his angel, and he would pay dearly for it.
Dax and Ember wandered around the warehouse. Dax showed her everything and when they came to stop at the resin station her eyes lit up at all the sculptures she saw.
“Wow!” Was all she could say.
“I think we found your souvenir Ember” Dax replied, when she saw the look on her face.
“I think so too. Wow these are fucking amazing” Ember gushed, she’s never seen anything like it.
“What do you do, Ember?” Dax asked,
“I’m a photographer, but I make custom jewellery pieces and my Uncle Theo sells them in his store.” Ember replied as she continued to look at the display in front of her. Dax brushed past her to get onto the desk so she could start pulling pieces down for her to look at. Ember’s breath caught in her throat at the contact and she waited for the wave of repulsion to hit and course through her. She didn’t want to hit her new elven friend, she clutched her hands tightly behind her back. Begging for the patience to ride out the wave.
She really liked Dax and wanted to keep her as a friend. But she didn’t feel anything like she did when others touched her. Her skin didn’t crawl, her heart didn’t race, knots did not form in her stomach. Releasing the breath she was holding, she looked at Dax’s back. She was fine, she was fine, how the fuck was she fine? She hasn’t been able to touch anyone other than her Uncle Theo and her cousin James since she was bit by that big headed thingy in the woods. It’s a one off! She thought. She barely touched her, it was a simple brush that was all, barely felt it. Then again she almost laid the big guy out in the diner the other day when he brushed her neck trying to patch her up. She had to know, she had to know for sure.
Dax went to hand some pieces down to her so she could see them and seeing the perfect opportunity for greater contact, Ember grasped the item and her hand. Nothing….nothing but a wave of warmth washed through her.
“You ok?” Dax asked her,
“Yeah!” Ember looked back at her and took her hands from Dax’s. A big smile playing on her lips. “I’m fucking great, hey is that a skull?” She asked, pointing at something red and black on the top shelf.
“It is, I don’t get many orders for skulls, but I like making them.” Dax replied, putting the one in her hands back and raising up to her tippy toes to grab the red and black ombre skull down.
“L….there’s a ladder!” Carter said pointing to it beside the desk
“Yup, and it’s a nice one too” Dax replied, still straining to reach the shelf.
“I don’t blame you, the one at my Uncle’s store threw me on the floor twice.” Ember said. Carter climbed onto the desk and reached up to the shelf pulling the skull down. When he handed it to her, his face held a disapproving look and he shook his head at her. His Alpha would not be happy if he knew she was climbing the fucking furniture and he did nothing to stop it.
“Use the ladder!” Carter huffed.
“Is he your brother?” Ember asked, watching how protective Carter was over her.
“He seems to think so” Dax answered,
“I am!” Carter stated sharply. “And if Al….Kane saw you doing that, he’d fucking flip”
“Kane’s not here, and you’re not going to tell him or someone else will fucking flip” Dax huffed back. Carter glared at her, his top lip slightly curled back. “Don’t you dare!” She warned. He jumped off the desk instead and grumbled something under his breath.
“Wow! He’s a little protective. That’s so sweet though. He thinks of you as his sister and has a need to protect you. I don’t have any siblings, but if I did I’d want them to act like that. My cousin James acts like that when he’s around, but I don’t see him that much. I guess I’d have to stop moving around.” Dax just looked at Ember.
“It is sweet.” Was all she could say, shooting Carter a smile. He half smiled back, still shaking his head at her. She handed the skull to Ember, her eyes lit up even more at it.
“I think I found my souvenir, this is amazing. You’re a really good artist.” Ember gushed some more at it. It was definitely what she was looking for.
“Great, I’ll box it up for you.” Dax climbed off the desk with Carter right there in case she fell. Still shaking his head mumbling under his breath. This time she caught what he was saying.
“I’m not a pain in the ass Carter” She huffed at him.
“Shoe fits!” Carter replied back. Ember just broke out laughing at them.
“Oh yeah, he’s your brother. Only siblings can get away with talking to each other like that.” Ember nodded her head in emphasis of her point.
Dax pulled a crate from another shelf big enough for the skull. Lining it with foam and a piece of black velvet she gently laid the skull inside. Placing another piece of foam over top to keep it protected in Ember’s adventures. When she slid the box across the desk to her, Ember’s eyes lit up at the carvings on the crate.
“It’s like a souvenir in a souvenir” she stated, taking in the detail. “Thank you!” She had something she wanted to do before she left though, a theory she wanted to test.
Ember reached her hand out, almost immediately the wave hit her. Her skin crawled, her heart rate quickening. The repulsion she felt was intense. She didn’t understand it, why could she touch her and not him. Her hands started to shake and she clutched them tightly to her chest clenching them into fists.
“Did you just poke me?” Carter asked, stepping back from her. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” He went to reach out to touch her to make sure she was ok when his hand was snatched out of the air by Damon.
“Not that one brother!” He said moving Carter away from her. Damon whispered something to him and his eyes shot open as he looked from Damon to Ember.
Not knowing what was going on and seeing the distress Ember was going through, Dax wrapped her arms around her and gently guided her into a hug.
“Feisty pants!” Damon went to say, but when he saw Ember melt into Dax’s embrace he stopped himself. What the fuck? He thought. Ember looked at him, her eyes said she had no idea why. Ember clung to Dax, and the wave passed through her to be replaced by the same warmth she felt before.
“Us elves have to stick together” Dax whispered in her ear, Ember just nodded.
“Thank you!” She replied. They stayed like that for a moment longer before they ended their embrace.
“Hey Ember! Are you ok now?” Damon asked as he eyed her wearily,
“Yeah, I’m ok!” She nodded her head
“I thought you were leaving yesterday?” Damon said,
“I was supposed to but I started working on a piece. Swore a bunch at it so you know it’s a good one. But I had to get it complete before I left. It’s for your friend, her man….” Ember looked at Dax’s hand and realized she wasn’t wearing it so she skitted around what it was she made. “It’s to go with the other one, but I don’t know where to find him but I guess I can leave it with you to give to him he’ll know what to do.” She reached into her bag and pulled out a small box and went to hand it to Dax.
“Can I trust you not to look at it?” She asked,
“Yeah” Dax replied, nodding her head though she never took her eyes off the suspiciously looking jewellery box.
“No!” Both Damon and Carter replied in unison.
“Hey!” Dax huffed at both boys. “I won’t look!”
“Will she look?” Ember asked the boys,
“Yup!” They again answered in unison
“I’m not that bad!” She huffed one more time.
“Maybe I should leave it with you then” Ember put it on the edge of the desk beside Damon. “Don’t look though it’s not for you” Carter grabbed it first before Damon could and shoved it in his jeans pocket.
“Hey!” Damon said,
“You’re worse than she is,” Carter replied at his questioning glare.
“Carter! I’m not that bad,” Damon said motioning towards Dax. Ember cracked up laughing again.
“You guys are a riot. And I’m gonna miss you, maybe I’ll be back this way again.” She said, grabbing the chest off the desk.
Her and Dax moved towards the office to take care of the price. Ember refused to leave without paying for it.
“Hold up lil sister. Give me your phone” Damon called to Ember. When she did he imputed his number, Dax’s number and Carter’s number into the contact list.
“You ever find yourself in trouble, give us a call.” He said as he handed the phone back. Ember looked from Dax to Carter who both just nodded. Her smile got bigger, and she couldn’t help but throw her arms around Dax. She was the only one she could hug. Saying their goodbyes they watched the little firecracker bounce across the parking lot and get into a blue jeep. With a final wave she drove out of sight.
“She feels like family” Dax said,
“Yes she does. That’s why I gave her our numbers” Damon replied, nodding. “So what’s in the box Carter?” Damon asked as he turned to him.
“I don’t know!” Carter replied as he walked away from them to go and close the bay door.
“But you’re curious!” Dax said following him
“No!” He responded over his shoulder.
“Just a little peek Carter” Damon was right behind her,
“No!” Carter was trying to bite back his laughter at the two of them.
“Come on!” Dax begged,
“No!” Carter shook his head, a grin on his face. There was a reason Ember didn’t want her to see it. “We should get going now” He had the door closed, listening to both his brother and sister huff behind him. They would hound him the whole way home.
Kane met them on the driveway when Damon said they were 10 minutes away from the house.
“Come on Carter, stop being mean just a small peek” Dax was dying to know what was in the box Ember gave him.
“No!” He said getting out of the vehicle
“It’s not even yours. Its Kane’s and therefore I get to look at it” She argued,
“That’s a valid argument” Damon was in total agreement with his sister, he wanted to know what was in the box as well.
“No!” They huffed again.
“Can you say a different word?” Dax grumbled.
“No!” Both Dax and Damon huffed.
“You could just tackle him,” Dax said as she looked at Damon. He just grinned and Carter backed away from him.
“What’s mine?” Kane asked as he watched the three, interrupting whatever was about to happen.
“The little spitfire stopped by the warehouse today. Gave a box to Carter and said it was for you. Something about swearing at it a bunch and it being a good one, but it goes with the other one and you’ll know what to do with it. But that asshole won’t let us look at the box.” Damon answered, motioning towards Carter.
“Yeah, he just keeps telling us no,” Dax added.
“Well it’s not yours,” Kane said, pulling her into his arms.
“Why does Carter look like an Easter egg again?” Johnny asked as he joined them outside.
“That was his fault, I told him to get out of the way and he didn’t listen,” Dax replied.
“I understand why you don’t want the stupid swinging contraption at the house.” was all Carter said as Johnny cracked up laughing.
“Why don’t you go get cleaned up?” Kane said, looking down at her. “Dinner is almost ready, and Margie made something special for dessert” Dax’s eyes lit up at the dessert, she nodded her head and started towards the house. Carter waited till she was out of sight before he fished the box out of his pocket and handed it to his Alpha.
“Thank you Carter” Kane said, he looked at the box, an idea of what might be in it popped into his head. Open the fucking box! Ky huffed in his head. Patience Ky! I have none, open the fucking box!
“Open the fucking box!” Damon blurted, “I wanna see what’s in it” he added when Johnny looked at him. Carter was kinda curious as well, he couldn’t help it. Damon and Dax pestered him the whole way home about the box and his interest was piqued. Kane went to open the box only to snap it shut again. A chorus of curses filled the air and he chuckled.
“I thought you had more resolve than that Carter” Kane said looking at him.
“I thought so too. But they harassed the fuck out of me the whole way home about it” He replied, he couldn’t help it he wanted to know.
“Put the boy out of his misery, open the box” Johnny was interested as well. If it came from Ember and she said it goes with the other one, he too had an idea of what was in the box.
Once more Kane opened the box, this time displaying the contents.
“Holy fuck are those….” Damon began
“Wedding bands” Johnny grinned he was right, the look on Kane’s face said he knew what was in the box as well.
“You’re gonna ask her?” Damon asked, looking at Kane.
“I am!” Kane closed the box and slipped it into his pocket. “While you were playing in the woods I went to town hall.”
“No fucking way! You got the licence already?” Damon asked,
“Dad is ready to go as well and Kenneth said Seraphine just needs to put the finishing touches on the dress. Katalina and Magda have been arguing over hair and makeup but Tamera is firm on the nails so she said they better get on board with her design, or there will be hell. She might be an excitable little thing but dynamite has nothing on her temperament. Jackie and Lydia have the flowers arranged, and Margie says your cake is going to be brownies served on cookies with ice cream and you better be ok with that or too fucking bad.” Johnny cut in. Carter and Damon both just stared at them with wide eyed expressions on their faces.
“But you haven’t asked her yet?” Damon just wanted to make sure he was understanding this. He had the whole fucking wedding planned and he hadn’t even asked the bride.
“I am tonight” Kane replied, he has never been more damn sure of anything in his life. This is what he wanted, he wanted her in his world, the human world and every world in between. He wanted her as his wife, his Luna and Goddess willing the mother to his children.
“And you’re going to do this tomorrow?” Carter asked,
“Three days before the Blue Moon. We will also be hosting the Luna ceremony the same night” Kane replied,
“What about?” Johnny asked,
“After Town Hall I stopped by and spoke to them both in private. They will be here” Kane replied
“Who?” Damon asked,
“Glenda and Murray” Kane replied,
“Mama said when Dax leaves for the warehouse tomorrow she’ll have the pack set everything up. They only know about the Luna ceremony, so if Dax sees all the decorations she’ll only be slightly suspicious” Johnny said,
“Who’s going to walk her down the aisle?” Damon asked,
“You! Both of you! You claimed her as your sister before anybody, before you even knew she was your sister. It seems fitting that the honour goes to you both, it was Murray’s idea.” Kane replied. Damon and Carter looked at each other then back at him, neither able to say anything.
“Close your mouths boys. Carter get cleaned up or Margie won’t let you in the house for dinner” Kane turned on his heel with Johnny right behind him laughing at their expressions.
“Our sister’s getting married!” Carter just nodded his head, still uncertain of what to say.
“What was with everyone tonight?” Dax asked as her and Kane walked hand in hand back to the meadow he had taken her to.
“What do you mean?” Kane looked down at her.
“Everyone kept looking at us. All night they kept looking at us. I was pretty sure Damon’s head was going to pop off with how many times he looked in your direction. Especially if you moved in the slightest.” She explained. All dinner they had eyes on them, waiting for something to happen. He chuckled at her explanation, they were waiting for something all right, but he was not going to do it in front of them.
“Why didn’t you give yourself a last name?” Kane asked her. The question caught her by surprise, she stared at him for a minute, before she shrugged.
“I don’t know, just didn’t, didn’t think about it.” Kane didn’t believe her reply, there was a reason, she just didn’t want to say it.
“That’s not true.” He said, perching upon a rock and pulling her towards him.
“It’s not, not true. I wanted a name, any name so I did research on how to go about changing it. I filled out all the documents and there were a lot of documents. The only thing I left blank was the name I wanted to change it to. I didn’t know. When I walked into the county clerk’s office I still didn’t have a name. Pretty hard to process the documents when there is no name. The clerk asked me and I said the first thing that popped out of my mouth.” Dax explained.
“So you could have been Sarah?” Kane asked,
“I could have been, I could have been anything. I just wanted a name. I didn’t care that I had no last name. I wasn’t sure how long I was going to survive and I didn’t want to die Baby Girl Jane Doe. If I was going to die then I was going to die with a name.” Dax finished. He held her closer to him.
“Have you thought about giving yourself a last name?” Kane asked,
“Not really, been a little preoccupied with other worries, to think about a last name” She said, looking up at him. Dax didn’t understand the look on his face, she couldn’t place it.
“Why do you want to know?”
Kane remained silent for a while. He had thought it over so many times how he would ask her.
“You’re impulsive, have a mouth you can’t seem to control, and you can be a bit careless” He started.
“Like you’re sunshine and rainbows all the time. You’re moody and bossy and can be quite grumpy sometimes.” She defended herself
“Don’t stop there, tell me how you really feel” Kane said, this was not how he wanted to ask her.
“What do you mean careless? That’s absolute bullshit, I’m not careless” She huffed at him
“So you didn’t stand on a desk, knowing you were still too short to reach something on the top shelf and would have to climb to get to it when there was a perfectly good ladder sitting not two feet from you?” He asked as a smile spread across his face when she looked away from him.
“I’m gonna kick Carter’s ass” She huffed,
“Carter didn’t tell me.” Kane said, she looked back at him trying to figure out how he knew then. The cameras!
“Carter told Damon, Damon told me,” Kane said. So not the camera’s! Nyx stated in her head.
“I’m still gonna kick Carter’s ass,” She nodded. She can try! Ky howled.
“Like I was saying, you can be a bit careless. You are unpredictable, manoeuvring your emotions is sometimes like navigating a tiny minefield and I don’t always know where to step. I might have set a few off.” He continued,
“Kind of heading in that direction right now if you don’t make a point soon” Dax stated dryly, he could only smile at her as he stood up and switched their positions so she was sitting on the rock and he stood in front of her.
“My mate, my Luna. I’m in this for the long ride, so say the word and I will follow you. I’m here to make you laugh and smile, I’m here to stand by you at every corner. Please tell me you’ll share each day, each night and every morning with me. Tell me you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime, because I’m here to go on that journey with you till the end of time. I’m here now, I’m here forever, I’m here always.” Dax looked at him, confusion clear across her face.
“Did you hit your head?” She asked, “Cause I don’t….” He got down on one knee after he pulled the box from his pocket and opened it for her to see. Her eyes went wide as she stared at the ring. She took in every detail. The rose and white gold roses. The onyx, amethyst and sapphire gems sitting in the middle of each rose. Intricately placed on the vine that made up the band.
“Dax, will you be my wife?” He asked. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words were coming out. She just stared at the ring, the man, hearing the words he spoke rolling over and over in her head.
“Are you su….crazy?” She asked,
“Probably! But you are my life, my world makes more sense with you in it. I have you in the werewolf world, now I want you in every world.” Kane replied, he pulled the ring from the box and slipped it onto her left ring finger.
“Are you sure?” It came out as a whisper.
“Always and forever” He whispered. The smile tugging at her lips as she stared at the ring.
“Yes” hushed and low
“Yes” louder, her eyes welling with tears
“Yes” Dax flung herself off the rock and into his arms. Repeating yes over and over in between kisses.
