His uncle called me a breeder, nothing more than a bedwarmer, not a real woman. Oh, how that hurt! But how strangely comforting it felt having the king’s arm around my waist. I fit under his arm like I belonged there.

“Yeah, we belong to him alright. He paid for us. Tasha snarled. I felt her anger and bitterness. ‘Look at the way these people are looking at us. We are nothing to them.”

She was right, the resentment on their faces was unmistakable. Why did king Amaris do this to us? He must have an agenda. Tasha snorted her disgust.

But then when his anger burst out from him towards his uncle, it was as if he formed a shield around us. I was scared, alright I was terrified, but he held me so close, and I have never felt so safe in my life like nothing could touch me. It was confusing to say the least.

‘Don’t get too attached to him. He is not mate. Tasha snarled and she bristled with animosity. She was still hung

up about Luke.

I shushed her. I didn’t want to think about Luke. It hurt too much. But I liked the way he looked at me, that something in his eyes, like he regretted letting me go. I sighed. Well, it was too late. The king would never let me

go.

‘The king dislikes his brother. Tasha mused, ‘Did you see the way the prince looked at you, Raine. He couldn’t take his eyes off you.”

“You’re reading too much into that, Tasha. He has a mate and she’s pregnant.” But I did notice it. Even dancing with the king, I could feel his eyes on me.

“Are you done speaking to your wolf, Raine?” His voice sent my heart in a spin. “I hate being ignored.”

He moved me like a puppet over the dance floor. I was under his spell. Those dark eyes that drove deep into my soul, set my nerves on edge.

“……I didn’t mean to ignore you, your Majesty.” I hated that my mouth went completely dry. I bit my lower lip between my teeth to stop its trembling.

“Amaris.” A smile ghosted his face. “You’ll soon remember it.” Our bodies collided and I gasped from the heat he radiated. With his lips close to my ear he said, “You’re so nervous. I won’t hurt you, if that is what you are worried

about.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that. My knees felt weak thinking about what he would do to me, and some dark part of me couldn’t wait. His breath against my skin made me hot and cold at the same time. The small hairs at my nape stood on end like I had been hit with an electric current. Every moment, every touch made me so aware of him, the strength of his biceps, the muscles of his thighs rippling underneath his royal blue dress pants.

Tasha growled a warning, ‘Not our mate. He’ll only hurt us.’ I tuned her out. He couldn’t hurt us anymore than

Luke did.

Without warning, he swept me off my feet. My arms went around his neck on impulse. His shoulder-length hair swept over my bare skin, surprising me with its silky softness. Our foreheads touched as he cradled me in his arms and for a moment I couldn’t breathe. His lips were just there, waiting for mine. He waltzed us off the dance floor and out of the ballroom. Our eyes remained locked onto each other and everything else faded into the background.

Up four flights of stairs, down a long, broad corridor, he walked with me in his arms. I barely noticed the ser vants bowing down to him as we passed, I was too busy taking in his features, the shape of his lips, full and sensual but how they turned down slightly at the corners, making him look serious. The slight cleft in his cleanshaven chin where some stubble already started appearing. I had to stop myself from running my fingers over it, longing to feel the roughness against my skin.

“Snap out of it. He’s putting a spell on you.’ Tasha growled low at the back of my mind.

But his scent… I closed my eyes and inhaled his earthy essence. He stopped suddenly and my eyes flew open to find him staring at me, his dark eyes dilated, and they flashed red for a second as his wolf stared back at me. He was breathing heavily, and it scared me.

“Your majesty?”

“You’re driving me crazy. I’m having a hard time controlling myself, Raine. That is what you do to me.” His mouth moved against my cheek as he whispered those words to me, sending delicious shivers down my spine. I hardly suppressed the moan when he rubbed his rough stubble against my cheek. His mouth found my earlobe and he sucked lightly on it.

“Oh, my goddess…” I moaned, heat rushing to my core, and I felt ashamed that I reacted like a lustful little s lut. Tasha huffed and retreated way back into my mind.

Don’t be ashamed. I smell your land I want you more than you can imagine.” He breathed into my mouth, his tongue swiping over my lips, demanding entrance and as if I were outside my body, I watched myself giving in to his devouring kiss.

When he broke the kiss, my head spun as I came down from the high. My first kiss. Ever. My cheeks were burning, and I panted like I ran a marathon. He stared down at me with half-closed eyes.

“I can get addicted to your taste.” He grinned slightly, brushing across my lips with his thumb. “Why the hell are my rooms so far away?” He started to walk faster with me clinging like a child to his neck. I laid my head on his broad shoulder, smiling to myself. Maybe being his possession wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

He kicked the door closed behind us with the heel of his boot. It was the largest room I’ve ever seen, but there was no time to admire anything because he dropped me onto his enormous, canopied bed and the way he looked at me like he was going to eat me alive, it turned me on and scared me to death at the same time. This was it! There was no turning back now. He was going to take my virginity.

“This is where you belong. Right here. In my bed.” He said as he started to unbutton his tunic.

My hands gripped the satin-covered cus hions at my back. I looked up at him, watching while he peeled off his shirt and necktie and tossed it away to join the tunic on the embroidered loveseat sofa. My eyes feasted on his perfectly sculptured upper body. I even licked my lips, not that I intended to. But when he started to unbuckle his trousers, my anxiety took over. Or maybe it was Tasha, making her disapproval known.

“Wait.” The words just popped out of my mouth.

I

He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. “What?!” his hands stilled on his belt.

“I can’t do this.” I shook my head so violently the comb holding it up fell out and my hair tumbled down over my

shoulders.

His face turned into a thunder cloud. “What did you just say to me?” The threatening tone of his voice did not escape me. I held my breath, waiting for the punishment. He was much stronger than Peter. One blow from him would surely kill me.

“I… I’m not ready. Please, I don’t want…” my voice sounded small and weak. I needed Tasha but she wasn’t responding.

The next minute the king grabbed me off the bed, his eyes flashing with his wolf’s anger. “Are you trying to tease me, Raine? You were more than f ucking ready minutes ago.” His voice whipped over me, making me cower and whimper. He shook me. “What the hell is wrong with you? Look at me

For all the anger I felt in his grip, the hands that held me were firm but not hurtful.

I peered up at his angry scowl. The moment our eyes met I saw his face soften. He let out a deep sigh as he touched my face, his fingers softly traced the lines of my cheekbones to my jaw.

“Raine, don’t fight me. I have a hard time controlling my urges because of this d amn mating moon. If you resist, my wolf is going to take over and I don’t want to hurt you.” He pulled me against his chest, and I heard the wild beating of his heart. My arms crept around his waist and my cheek rested against his chest, feeling the thump, thump against my skin, vibrate through my brain. It started to slow down as he held me tight, and I inhaled his strong male and heady arousal scent that threatened to overpower my senses.

“Why me?” I whispered to him.

“Because you were made for me.” He simply said as his fingers found the fastenings on the back of my dress and undid them one by one. “Can’t you feel it?” Warm lips descended onto my naked shoulder, sending a flood of need to my lower regions.

The dress pooled to my feet leaving me in my worn underwear. So embarrassing. But it didn’t bother the king. He tore it off me in seconds leaving me bare before him. My first instinct was to cover myself. Not that being naked bothered us being werewolves, but standing like this before this powerful man… I felt so vulnerable. Those eyes saw much more than my naked body. They saw me, my naked soul.

“Don’t.” A firm hand on my wrist. “Don’t ever do that. Don’t hide from me.”

I didn’t want him to see the bruises, the old scars from when Peter whipped me for no reason other than being

there.

Silvery moonlight kissed his face as he took my hands and placed it against his chest. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, there was that strange pull that drew me in. I tried to resist it, fought against it, but blame it on the moonlight and the way he said my name, I couldn’t pull away.

He said I was made for him. Me. My heart ached to believe him, but my mind and my wolf told me not to. Men were all the same. They only wanted to use us.

But the way he kissed me, maybe just this once, I wanted to feel loved. Even if it wouldn’t last.
