RAINE

When we entered the hut, I was pleasantly surprised by how large the interior was from how it seemed from the outside. It was not what I imagined it would look like, everything seemed really normal. A small kitchen, neatly organized with a fire crackling pleasantly in the hearth, pretty curtains at the window and a plain wooden table and chairs to eat dinner at. Nothing extraordinary. Until you take a

closer look.

The glass jars on the shelves weren’t packed full of homemade jams and jellies. There were strange objects swimming around in the colorful liquids. A grey cat with turquoise eyes sat on the table and watched us with aloof disinterest, licking its pa

paws.

Joanna, the witch, emerged from behind a curtain of beads. She was indeed a beautiful woman with scarlet hair falling over her shoulders to her middle with the most luminous green eyes I have ever seen.

I She bobbed her knees in a delicate curtsy and smiled at us. The plain purple sheath dress she wore accentuated her curves but what drew my attention was the crystal pendant hanging from a chain around her neck. I had the strangest feeling that it was calling out to me.

“I was hoping you would come sooner.” She said, offering us a seat at her table. The cat stretched himself and dropped to the floor, tail swishing to show us his annoyance.

“Milady was tired.” Rhona told her. “We came as soon as we could.”

“Thank you so much for helping me, Joanna. I know we owe you a great deal and I promise you we will compensate you well for your services.” I prayed she would take my word for it.

“Oh, I have no doubt. Tell me what you need.” Joanna inclined her head, waiting and fixing me with her mesmerizing green eyes.

I need to see if he survived. Find his location and bring him back. I know you can do it.” My heart was constantly racing, fearing for his safety.

“Rhona, be a dear and make us a cup of tea.” Joanna instructed her, waving a slim hand in the direction of the kettle.

It was clear that Rhona wasn’t a stranger to the witch’s house. She obediently filled the kettle and hung

it over the fire to boil.

“Have you brought something of the king’s? Something personal?” Joanna asked me. I shook my head. having had no idea she would need it. “No matter, we’ll make do. Give me your hands.”

I did as she asked and found her hands to be warm, hot even. She turned my palms over and peered Into them with a small frown nestled between her brows.

“Interesting.” She said at length.

“What is?”

“Your lineage. You have a powerful mage in your bloodline, my dear. I had a suspicion but just wanted to be sure.”

“A mage? Are you sure?” Was I part witch then, I wondered. “What does that even mean?”

She chuckled; her voice was musical, like a bird’s. “I’m sure we’ll find out.” She got up and disappeared behind the beaded curtain that I assumed would be her bedroom and reappeared a few moments later with a cloth covered object.

Rhona poured steaming green tea into porcelain cups and placed it on the table. She kept a respectful distance until Joanna told her to sit down. She uncovered the round object to reveal a black crystal ball. From her neck she took off the cylindrical crystal pendant hanging from a silver chain and again I had that same strange feeling.

“Your Majesty, I need a drop of your blood. You and the king are connected by your soulmate bond and the pup in your womb. It will help me to scry for him.” She went to fetch a small, sharp knife from a wooden block on the counter.

When she mentioned the pup in my womb my throat constricted with worry. Rhona and I exchanged a look which didn’t go unnoticed by Joanna.

“Do you have doubts that the pup is the king’s?” she asked, with no shock or surprise in her tone.”

I swallowed hard. “I don’t know what to think.”

She nodded. “The vampire got into your head. Do not focus on him. Focus on the one you love.” She took my left hand in a firm grasp and made a small cut on my index finger, letting the blood drip onto the black crystal ball. Instead of it running down like I expected it to, the crystal seemed to absorb the few drops.

“Look into the ball and concentrate on the one you love.” Joanna’s melodic voice hummed into my ears, and I became vaguely aware of the throbbing of the pendant swinging from her fingers. “Think only of

him.”

I heard her chanting in an unknown language while I peered into the black crystal focusing on my feelings for Amaris. The black crystal started swirling in front of my eyes, turning into liquid, dark at first and then gradually became clearer to reveal…

“Amaris…” I saw him. He was with other men in a dark tunnel. They were moving fast. “Amaris!” I called out to him, he stopped and lifted his head, looked right at me.

“Raine?” I heard him say my name and then the vision blurred and blacked out.

“He’s alive! He saw me!” I was elated. Grabbing Joanna’s hands, I almost cried with relief. “Thank you, thank you.”

“That was all you, Your Majesty.” Joanna said, smiling softly. “But we have yet to get them out. I need my coven sisters‘ help. It seems there are a lot of wolves needing to be rescued.”

“Please, Joanna, I’ll do anything. We have to get him back.” I was about to beg on my knees if that was

what it took.

“I will do all I can.” Joanna said. “Someone’s coming.”

Rhona got up to gaze out of the kitchen window. It was getting dark out.

“It’s Beta Ross, Milady, and some of the guards.” Rhona pulled her bottom lip in between her teeth. “I think we’re in trouble.”
